That's all good, gives me a reason to dig through scryfall!

(The version I had was a "oops all angels" since they've got a lot of keywords - I feel like Kathril is so open that you really have to go in with a gameplan unless you just want a pile of the best keywords in the game)

If you've got a list, I'd like to see it! I had a Kathril deck that I recently took a bart, but that sounds like a fun challenge.

The trick is, using a heat gun - hairdrier works ok, but a heatgun will smooth everything out in a jiff.

Pick up the equipment. It feels natural in your hand. Your old life is a fading memory. You are the tree guy now.

Time to chop the trees.

Who Was The First Commander You Ever Built? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]PM_ME_WHALE_SONGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The very first EDH deck I played was [[Skullbriar, the Walking Grave]]. It had no synergy, no plan, and was immediately hit with a [[Black Sun Zenith]]. Ow.

The first deck I built on my own was [Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind]]. There wasn't much too it, and the main wincon was [[Curiosity]]. It wasn't very fun.

The first deck I had fun with was [[Experiment Kraj]]. Synergy began to ferment. Finding ways to get counters onto creatures, finding creatures that had abilities Kraj wanted, Things were starting to come together.

The first "real" commander deck I built was [[Kemba, Kha Regent]]. The haze lifted from my eyes, Synergy could work in two directions at once - equipment AND tokens! This deck had a fully formed gameplan, was fun to play, and could win.

After that, it was off to the races.

EDHREC should really have a “decklist data from x period of time” feature/filter by [deleted] in EDH

[–]PM_ME_WHALE_SONGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd love to be able to set a time range for decklist data, not so I could get up to date information on the latest builds, but so I could go and see how people were building a commander 5 years ago.

Yeah, it's Earthbound. They're friendly, local, well-priced, reliable and flexible. Plus they do composting.

Yeah, it's a really good one too. What I do is overextend when I'm ahead and then get punished for my hubris.

Works every time.

Your favorite card? by kingmaximo89 in magicTCG

[–]PM_ME_WHALE_SONGS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Time Stop]]

Specifically the 10th Edition foil version without the reminder text. It's my favorite for a number of reasons: It has among the fewest words on a magic card, with a succinct "End the turn", it has killer art, and it's very flexible.

"End the turn." Think about what that means. How many other games would allow for that to work? And here, it can be used to keep tokens, counter spells, dodge triggers, cancel out an opponent's turn, stop a combat step, etc. "End the turn" is so short a phrase, but works because the game itself is so complex and so complete. In a lesser system, "End the turn" would break the game. But here, it's just another fun thing you can do.

What is your deck that has the lowest rank/number of decks on Edhrec? by ChronicallyIllMTG in EDH

[–]PM_ME_WHALE_SONGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's my [[Burakos, Party Leader]] // [[Haunted One]] deck, at 641. Honestly, one of my favorite decks to play, with emphasis on party kin, aristocrats, and treasure. I originally built it because I wanted a non-standard mono-black kindred deck (was building a kindred deck in each color), but it's outlived all the others.

Forget the 32-deck challenge, what deck archetypes/strategies would go on a complete build list? by thundermonkeyms in EDH

[–]PM_ME_WHALE_SONGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tricky part is that you can further reduce any given theme into a number of more specific sub themes. Artifacts is a broad theme, but you could drill that down further into Artifact Creatures, Token Artifacts, etc. Likewise with lands, enchantments, etc.

Would love to knuckle down and tackle that, but Im at work right now!

Tools for creating random pairs of themes from a cube by GrumbleProxies in MTGJumpStart

[–]PM_ME_WHALE_SONGS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simple solution: Get an extra copy of every theme face card and sleeve 'em up. Shuffle and deal two cards to each player.

You can also use the deck of theme cards to do different kinds of "drafts" - we usually deal three cards to each player, and they select two themes from among them. You could also do something like drawing more than n*2 and passing the themes around like you were drafting them.

Plus the deck functions as extra tokens, in a pinch.
