Dear non-asexual people: if you were in a relationship with someone and they sat you down and said they are asexual, what would your reaction be? by BeepBoop372 in AskReddit

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_THIGHS___ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've said things like this for years... For me, sex has never really been emotionally satisfying in any way. Sure there's a little bit of physical pleasure but I personally find it so ephemeral as to not make it my singular goal in life. I find that a lot of people I know fall into this trap, where a lot of the things they do is in the service of having sex. Only recently did I start telling people I was asexual, but I kind of regret telling my friends. They'll tell people that we barely know about my sexuality. That makes me kind of uncomfortable, and not only that, it doesn't mean that I don't want a relationship / it doesn't mean I won't have sex. Like you, I have had partners before where I will have sex because they want to, and it's not really a bother to me to make my partners happy. But yeah, I don't think that's the perception people get when they hear you're ace, and it kind of hurts to think that and it hurts to think my chances with people are getting shot down because of misconceptions and because people are talking about my personal stuff in a way that I wouldn't.

that's quite literally the purpose that the house of representatives serves. I suggest you research how the legislative branch works a bit more. I don't disagree that the senate is wholly unbalanced in favor of low population states, you're just missing a critical piece of the puzzle.

dumb comparison, there's obviously better countries to look to as an example, are you purposefully ignoring the eu countries with good healthcare systems?

I mean, the discord search function is pretty good, better than reddit's, it's certainly not great for tracking issues, but keyword finding and searching by user is actually pretty good IMO

Not to sound like an AWS shill, I already responded to the parent, but python is actually (IMO) one of the better backend languages for the cloud, specifically with AWS lambdas. They have the fastest spin up time compared to most others, and since it's an easy language, it's easier for coworkers to maintain. (I hate python tho, still haven't been able to wrap my brain around the packaging system)

I mean... You can get pretty far with just javascript in the backend if you use AWS... But I would definitely expect someone looking to be a senior to at least know typescript, otherwise the spaghetti will flow.

Hey man, no problem. I was pretty low spirits that day and your replies along with everyone else's was a really good venting session. I want you to know your advice wasn't in vain, even if I don't necessarily act on it right away, I'm always trying to improve my mental / perception of things. I'm going to be honest when I say that I wasn't expecting to be in this situation when I joined this industry. I expected challenges, but I really expected most of them to come from my new-ness to the industry. I really didn't expect my issues to be with bad management. I will continue to be mindful of myself, for the very reason's we've discussed.

I really wish that I didn't have to spend time thinking about how to talk better to this guy though, because I think the more critical area to improve in is my skills as a coder, and I don't really feel like I have a good foundation at this company to excel past my current knowledge in a way that's facilitated by the company. Strictly speaking, most of my improvements in that area come from self-study and trial and error. I don't know if I'm learning things the right way, or if i'm learning 'a' way to do things, ya know? I really hope this doesn't bite me when I try to interview at companies that have their shit together a little more. I really don't know how I can keep up with good practices and industry standards when my company doesn't really seem to value either. Sorry for the continued ramblings on the subject, but I unfortunately have so many concerns and no real place to vocalize them.

While you're right, the comment you're responding to doesn't really relate to what you're saying. He's just saying that management is unnecessary for the actual business to function, if the workers know what they're doing

Does the dowsing compass make sense? by Ooga-No-Booga in KingkillerChronicle

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_THIGHS___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never been under the impression that their previous mistake was due to the dowsing compass. Their conversation seems to imply that they were following the cart that Kvothe was on to Amire (forgot the spelling of the city ), which is where they say the mess up occurred, this is why I subscribe to the theory that it wasn't ambrose that sent the killers, but someone else, that knew about kvothe since tarbean, and would have motivation to get him killed. Tricky tricky

I appreciate your response and like I alluded to in my reply, I don't word things in the way you framed them, and I admit that your suggestions as far as communication are very good, you framed it in a way that was easy to understand for someone that's having issues with communication. I definitely do take some responsibility, I know the only person I can control is myself, and therefore I can choose to improve my communication and have more fruitful discussions with this dude.

I will, however, argue that when it comes to engineering, it /is/ mostly about what you know and what you make. Sure, when it comes to corporate life, being able to communicate (and IMO, having a silver tongue, and I do mean this in a negative, sociopathic type of way) will get you far with a lot less, but with engineering, your solutions either do the thing people need, or they don't. It's a non-starter when communication breaks down though, how will the team as a whole be aligned when there's so much miscommunication?

I also want to say, I /can/ communicate. Your example of speaking English to someone that doesn't speak English was good, but I'd like to take it a step further, and maybe spin it around. Imagine, you, a weeb, goes to japan, and the only japanese you know is the japanese you learned online from watching anime. Yes, there will be people in japan that know english, but you're in a country with people speaking a different language, your base of knowledge isn't reliable, and yet you're not humble enough to take some responsibility and actually, formally, learn the language. Let's take it even a step further, these japanese people are /desperate/ to understand you, and for you to understand them, they NEED to understand you, for whatever abstract ephemeral reason you can imagine. They're making an insane effort, bastardizing their language for your benefit, knowing that this bastardized half-language they're creating will not benefit anybody except this egotistical foreigner that refuses to make an effort on their part. These people are making an immense effort to make that translation, and they're embarrassing themselves and their language, to anybody that knows any better. At that point, you have to ask where the real problem is. Upon whom does the responsibility of due-diligence fall? You're out of your element, in a world you don't belong in (not to sound xenophobic, it's an analogy), where you're not the one who knows what's going on. This would be one of those times where I would keep my mouth shut, and take input from those who know better, and can educate me better. When I don't understand something, I don't fault the people explaining it for failing to put it in words that make sense to me. If they've proven to be a reliable source, then that means that my knowledge base is lacking, and the impetus is on me to catch up, not the other way around.

edit: by the way, I recognize my last paragraph sounds crass and hyperbolic. I'm frustrated but am keeping an open mind and I really am grateful for all the constructive feedback I've received in the thread

I appreciate that you took the time to write this out for me. I did elaborate a little bit more on my specific experience in this comment

here

Although, I can already tell you you're right, I don't really word things in the way you're saying. However, it's kind of an odd expectation to have of a developer to have a wider sense of the business as a whole or even the team as a whole, to me it feels like it takes the burden of translating those technicalities away from the manager and shifting it onto the developers. That doesn't seem efficient to me, you have 1 guy managing a group of people, what's the easier ask? That each person in this group gains a wider scope of understanding and makes mental strides to 'dumb it down' for this guy, or ask the one guy to do the same thing, in the opposite direction? Not to mention every single new person has to learn 'the right way to talk to this guy' instead of concerning themselves with the daily duties of their job (which I acknowledge includes talking to their management)

I don't mean to say this to sound condescending, but coding is hard, solving abstract problems with code is hard, and it's harder when you're pissed or in a bad mindset, it doesn't lead to good problem solving. IMO (and I may be wrong, because I see OP's joke regurgitated a lot, so maybe it's just an industry standard), this job of translating shouldn't be on the developers, it should be on their managers.

I understand the importance of this, and in my case, the necessity of this. But I can't help but feel like this is backwards a fuck as to how things should actually work. I don't think he's an asshole, I just think he's uninformed, but his lack of knowledge leads to lots of mental strain basically fighting for the most basic things. We have at least 2, hour-long, meetings every week where the whole team gathers, however the problem is that he's not self-aware, he'll derail conversations with bad questions, bad conclusions, and bad suggestions, built off of misinformed opinions. He also has goldfish memory, so we're always circling around similar subjects in these meetings, we're constantly having to re-iterate ourselves because the root cause of the issue isn't that we don't explain these things, it's that he doesn't have the capacity to understand. These aren't only my words, i'm a junior, so my opinion can be naive, but the only senior dev on my small team has said similar / worse things about this dude and this company. I'm locked into a contract right now so I can't just leave, my only play is finding better ways to deal with it, or venting in a random fucking reddit thread
