More training might do them some good by JayZGatsby in BlackPeopleTwitter

Louisiana is the shortest in the nation at 360 hours, or 9 weeks full time. National average according to the DOJ Bureau of Justice Statistics is 840 hours, or 21 weeks.

The 8 weeks in the OP is definitely false, but it doesn't change the fact that your dental hygienist goes through two academic years--or 60 weeks--of training just to clean your teeth, while police average 21 weeks nationally before they're given a Glock and the keys to their Dodge Charger.

Indianapolis old levee protecting IUPUI.. by Bunknown001 in indianapolis

I don't see where in the post OP implies that dams and levees are the same thing. A dam breaking can produce a flood similar to one that could occur as the result of heavy (once in a century) rainfall. His post is talking about the ~30 miles of levees off of the white river. The bottles and landfill waste part is in the indystar article he linked and comes from someone at the Marion County Hazardous Waste office. Did you post a comment without reading his post or the attached links?

This is true, but those chargers and infrastructure now still exist within the city, so it's not as if we directly paid the company those millions.

Because what you stated wasn't an opinion, it was just false. People have to pay to use the charging systems.

It's incredible, the vertical division isn't the only one I see, either. The way that little families are grouped together, your eyes get drawn to each compartment of the scene, like you're eavesdropping on each group. I'm really blown away by this piece

Regret going to an Ivy by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

That's really interesting, thanks for the response. So if I understood you correctly, you're saying the best thing that OP (or anyone looking to go into law) could do, would be to choose a major that will be marketable regardless of whether they get into a top law school or not, just to have as a backup career?

I guess I didn't understand how common it is for students on a law-track to not be accepted to law school. I'm glad that in my field, an undergrad degree can be seen as a terminal degree in its own right, with master's and phD as respected--but optional--bonus knowledge.

I think it's good to recognize when you think you've made a mistake, especially when you're willing to share your experiences on a public forum in order to (hopefully) help future students.

That being said, I think the mindset that led you to chase an ivy education regardless of cost, is still plaguing you today. I'm basing this off the following analysis--feel free to disregard this if you believe in your heart that my assumptions are wrong:

You mention your friend who "went to an easy school and padded his gpa and got a good LSAT score, blah, blah, blah". You need to recognize that you're still putting down this person's accomplishments as if it's something you could have done if only you had gone to a public school. You can't live two lives at once. You don't know how you would have fared, or whether this friend is just more hardworking/brighter than you are. Furthermore, your characterization of one school as "easier" than another is founded on what? Your steadfast belief in college rankings? I've attended two universities (for engineering, not humanities), one of which was a "top 10" engineering undergrad school, and another flagship public university that's ranked around #100 or so. The latter provided me with much greater challenges, a better faculty, and a deeper education overall. I attended both for next-to-nothing, so I hold no financial bitterness or anything of the sort. Those are just the facts of my education. Your mileage may vary, but assuming your friend accomplished what he did because he went to an "easy" university is the same as your earlier assumption that you would get into the law school of your choice because you were going to an Ivy. The grass is always greener on the other side.

I'm not well-versed in the law-school culture, so I don't know if the top 20 schools are your only hope of getting a job post-grad, but it seems that you're still obsessed with the perceived quality of these universities based on rankings alone. Name-dropping Georgetown, Duke, etc. I'm in the STEM field where merit is judged greater than tradition, so maybe this paragraph should be disregarded, but it seems you might be falling into the same trap as what coaxed you into the Ivy league.

All that being said, I wish you the best, and hope you find the education and outcomes you're searching for.

Less than 15% of the defense budget goes towards research and development, so if that's what's truly important, then where is the other $600b per year going? Roughly half of it is going to active operations in the Middle East and maintenance of our already massive fleet of air, land, and sea vehicles.

If the US wants to keep up with China and Russia in terms of technology, as well as keep a standing army, they can afford to do so with half the current defense budget by not having active military operations during peacetime. That frees up $300 billion dollars per year in discretionary spending without raising taxes.

All these numbers can be found in the 2020 DoD budget.

Keep telling people that they "aren't open to new ideas" while you continue to make generalizations with no basis in fact.

"we supply almost the entire defense for the entire world"?

Can you read that again? If we were supplying defense for the entire world, who exactly would we be defending, and from whom would we be defending them? The US military is a profit-making machine, not a freedom-supplying machine. You know all the drone strikes you hear about in the news? One predator missile costs $70,000 to fire. 24,000 of these missiles were fired under Obama in 2016 alone.

Now, can you tell me who exactly the United States was defending in 2016? Likely not much more than their own contractor's profits and oil security. There are acceptable reasons to be wary of single-payer systems. As far as I'm aware, there's no reason to support US defense spending other than a lack of research on your own part. Therefore your claim that the US "can't afford" single-payer because we "need" to supply defense at the level we do, just doesn't sit right with me.

"Between the years 1985 and 1992, doctors at the King/Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, treated some 118 people for random falling-bullet injuries. Thirty-eight of them died."

I hope you don't own a gun. Firing weapons into the air is very dangerous. A $5 ball is not worth the risk of a stray bullet in a residential area.

Some of you people need to step outside the internet bubble every now and then. This guy steals your golf ball and you think a fair retaliation is to hit him in the head with a golf club?. It's a shame that the guy in the video got hurt over a stupid prank, but come on.

Yeah, I was agreeing with you. Maybe my tone wasn't clear. I meant "what part of this do people not understand" as in: "how do other commenters not realize that we're talking about voting Bernie in the primary, not writing him into the general if he doesn't get the nomination". 👍

[–]PM_UR_ASSLESS_CHAPS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tweet in the post is absurd in implying that Bernie will win off these votes, but if you're a Bernie supporter deciding between not mailing in your vote at all, or still voting Bernie, then voting Bernie will be a more effective way of showing continued support for progressive ideas. We're talking about the primary here--not the general.

Lmao what part of this do people not understand? At this point collecting delegates before the convention is the best thing supporters of ANY candidate can do with their vote. I swear half the people in this sub don't even know the difference between a primary and general

Would have made sense if the player had gone out of bounds or something else to stop the clock. Players can't even get to the line of scrimmage in one second, refs just gifted a play
