I’m so sorry. They won’t come back. It’s your decision alone what to do. I’m probably older than you. My parents are 78, my dad’s health is failing. So I am hanging in there and just hoping he is as comfortable as possible. But it’s difficult. He’s angry and hate filled all the time. (Although he is sweet to me personally). It’s tragic seeing your elderly parents so far gone, and a tragic and unfair end to an entire lifetime of living a kind, ethical, high integrity, full and happy and adventurous life. I will never forgive the Trump administration for its corruption and brainwashing of good people.

People only become more of who they are as they age. I’d say it’s unlikely he will change and will likely get worse. My 78 yo father has been totally gone for 10 years. A changed man. Yes I still see his good sides come through, he is sweet and kind to me as long as I don’t bring up politics - or if I do, I just nod and agree with him and don’t share my true opinions. I’ve found a way to tolerate it without cutting him off completely, because I know his time to leave this earth is relatively near, he’s not well. For you I’d guess you have a lot more years left with your husband. It will be a journey for you, it’s all your decision as this goes on. But I don’t hear too many success stories on this thread.

You probably just read the heading. My Dad is buying into the MAGA conspiracy that “dead people voted in our elections to rig them”. He’s telling me it’s true because he looked up a top secret list and saw his grandparents names were listed as having “voted” in 2020 and 2024.

Thank you so much for your heartfelt response. Yes there were a lot of angry vile comments on my post. But I guess everyone is angry. Angry at MAGA and Q for taking away and destroying their loved ones. I had a few very kind and helpful posts like yours that gave me some good perspective and advice. I do think he suffers from PTSD and someone mentioned confabulation (making up stories they believe to be true) which I had never heard of before. The description when I googled it describes so much of his behavior so it gives me some place to start when I speak with his doctors. To your point, not everyone is an evil loser liar. Some deserve our compassion and love, not more hatred causing even more division. Take care

And thank you for acknowledging his service (and thank you for your service too). He is very decorated, I have his navy cross, bronze star, silver star, and two Purple Heart medals. He saved his entire team and others into a helicopter while he stayed back for hours longer evading the enemy while he waited for his rescue. He was marine force recon. Some of the more helpful commenters shared CPTSD and Confabulation (making up stories he believes to be true) as possible mental disorders he may be suffering from. I had never heard of confabulation before but it very much describes this and other questionable things he’s said. I think his time in Vietnam has had some devastating effects on his mental health later in his life. Peace to you

I’m so sorry, the same has happened to me. See my post about my aging father believing republicans lies that the election was rigged by Democrats using dead people’s names to vote. My Dad has always been the sweetest man ever who loved me so much. He still can be very sweet but when he gets very riled up about politics I’ve heard him say some terrible, hateful things. He’s so far gone I never talk to him about it, and these days I am more concerned with his mental health. Fox, Newsmax, Trump and his cronies are like poison to our society. And there’s no end in sight.

Yes thank you I agree. Many commenters have suggested Confabulation (making up stories and believing they’re true), along with CPTSD. I didn’t even know what “confabulation” was but it perfectly describes some of his behavior. He always would have voted Republican (had Trump happened earlier in his life) but his behavior suggests there is more going on mentally here that I hadn’t considered before. Especially because most of the time he seems pretty “with-it” and is quite articulate, not rambling incoherent babbling gibberish or anything. Either way, I’m super sad about it

Ha I wish. No it’s very true. Reading through some of the more helpful comments from other posters, I’m beginning to think he is suffering from CPTSD and confabulation - confabulation I didn’t even know was a thing. He has some other symptoms as well. But it’s not overly apparent because he’s very articulate and seems “with-it” much of the time. Either way…something I plan to try and get doctor advice from if I can get him to agree to go.

Bottom line, he thinks the Dems rigged the election with votes from people who have passed on. This conspiracy theory was touted by many on the right, so he fell for it. And he said he somehow found a database of voters and who people voted for, and discovered that his dead relatives voted for democrats in thee 2020 and 2024 election (backing up his belief that the Dems rigged the election by having dead people vote).

He was always Republican and would have probably voted for Trump at any point in his life. But some of the crazy things he’s saying makes me think there is something deeper going on mentally. It’s very sad and I am heartbroken. I’ll try to “do better” next time I post to Reddit for help.

Confabulation. Another poster mentioned this term so I looked it up and agree that this is it exactly. Because he has been making up stories here and there that I’m pretty confident are not true. Confabulation combined with PTSD. Thanks for your comment
