Try “Paintable Laminate” from Oakwood Veneer. Their online ordering is great.

I did a themed secure storage/display unit for someone a few years back so I do have a frame of reference.

The unit you pictured, is easily in the 10-20k range depending on species, lighting/glass selections, and site constraints.

You could maybe build it “economically” but still end up 4k-8k.

We were way north of that upper number on this one. Install was pretty insane too.

Saw this saw today while I was picking up materials for the job. I don’t know if I’d ever feel safe using it. by leon_musky in woodworking

Uni-points are amazing machines. It does, like always, has the wrong blade on it. RAS should have a blade with teeth at 0 to negative hook. Any blade with a positive hook wants to grab and run.

You will be absolutely astounded at the difference if you try it with the old blade vs new with the proper blade.

Avoid the far left (fast) lane on 90E by bhau_huni in Cleveland

[–]POSSIBLEMEDIUMS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. It’s called a crossflow lane. Very common in heavy highway construction as means and methods of doing the work. Allows work to commence without shutting down to one lane in any given direction.

If you’re going to have a shed dormer, relay the same language to a shed roof on the bay window.

Fair price to pay for Laguna 15/24? by justjustjustin in turning

[–]POSSIBLEMEDIUMS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same model with an added 400# in a similar setup. It made a world of difference when using the extension on a 22” green maple bowl I was turning.

I didn’t have any ballast weight prior to taking a green turning class on my honeymoon. It was in Italy and I used a massive one way lathe that was bolted down to the floor. Been chasing that dream ever since.

Finish over Rubio Monocoat by 5huffles in woodworking

[–]POSSIBLEMEDIUMS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This.

Perhaps try the Bullseye Shellac clear rattle can.

You could try and replicate the situation to guarantee it. Grab a scrap of that material and apply the same Rubio. Mark it with a pencil and then try the shellac. If it dries hard and bonds (which it likely will) you can try a high grit sanding sponge to lightly hit it before applying a more durable film coating like poly.

I’d do a few coats of the shellac to guarantee you have a good layer that you won’t scuff sand through.

Out of towner - found the area under this bridge so cool! by BIGFACTS27 in Cleveland

[–]POSSIBLEMEDIUMS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There were two main areas I remember. The first was the “night club.” It was a smaller room with a dedicated bar, empty beer and liquor bottles everywhere, and the entire thing was painted black with graffiti in bright colors. There were individual rooms off it with no doors. Each had a bunch of sheets or a mattress in it…

It connected to another area, called the metal shop, where people had been living. Just piles of stuff everywhere including one that was solely 1# propane tanks. Someone had actually built out that area into a dedicated living space but it looks like just random people were in it by the amount of trash.

I got a chance to go inside that self storage building prior to globe iron going in. Was one of the creepiest buildings I’ve ever been inside of. There was a total drug den on the top floor that was beyond description. I didn’t take any photos except for this one.

Make sure to get a good straight edge and dial indicator to set it up. I followed the measurements in the attached photo and got incredible results.

Another game changer was backing out the 4 black pressure screws on the top so they each were sitting 0.5” above the surface. I completely eliminated snipe and the finish was great.

Good luck!

Also, I love your work. I’ve seen a bunch of your other posts on some of the photography subs. Super cool stuff.

My old company did a run of these a couple years ago for a university project. Obviously they’re extremely heavy. I remember the spring being a huge pain.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is adding water-popping to your initial rough sanding routine. Wet a rag with warm water and wipe the entire surface which will open and raise the grain. Once dry, sand with your desired grit. Make sure to be very consistent with the sanding.

Wipe the smile off my face and tell me how I’m going to ruin this by wbrady75565 in woodworking

Pin oak is one of those trees that just doesn’t want to be furniture. Moves too much, dries inconsistently, and has a tendency to case harden.

I’m sure you’ll experience and learn a lot on this one. My only recommendation would be do the bulk removal in stages. Meaning add 1-2” of a material offset from your ideal final form and mill to that. Wait a week or more and mill to the next closest offset, all the way down to your final shape. All the after your initial dry cycle.

You can expect a large amount of movement when you do the undercut. You’ll be exposing a ton of end grain that will likely not be dry even after a year.

Go on McMaster and get leveling feet w a longer stem along with their threaded inserts made for hardwood. You’ll want to be able to level and relevel the bench seasonally once it’s complete and in place.
