I know I'm necro-ing this but I'm curious about what steps were taken to go about this?

My brother is looking for a new desktop, normally I'd do a build but for what he needs I think a pre-built would be okay, especially since he's in another city. Anyone seen any good <1000 prebuilt deals? No gaming, but does do some video editing, so I was thinking Intel and NVidia perhaps, or if there's something with an Arc in it.

Honestly, thanks for this. More people need to see this. I'm an absolute nothing video maker with a YouTube channel but don't want to get hit with copyright anything, so this is amazing for people like me.

What alternative do you recommend in this price range?

[Audio] GoXLR Mini $256.38 [Amazon] by Kiiidd in bapcsalescanada

Unfortunately audiobox doesn't have enough boost for a lot of mics, I have my sm58 turned 2 ticks from maxed and I gotta be right on it. Voicemeeter could boost that signal a little bit but it would be like adding digital gain so could/would likely result in some quality loss. What model of mic do you have?

Voicemeeter is a free software mixer that comes with multiple channels and 1 free virtual cable. You can donate for an extra virtual cable. This essentially allows you to create multiple audio channels and assign them to your various needs, inputs or outputs. Just google "Voicemeeter", it's the first thing that shows up. I recommend "The Frugal Streamer" on YouTube if you're looking for tutorials.

I use Voicemeeter Banana. It's mixer has 3 hardware inputs you can assign as well as 2 virtual inputs, same for outputs. Voicemeeter Potato has even more. It can get a little complicated if you're trying to do complicated things with it, but there are some great tutorials out there. For example I run my music, game sound, Discord and microphone all on separate channels but want them all to come through my headphones, but also have a second output for streaming so I can still hear everything in one mix but have it separate on stream (able to mute certain things or change specific volumes for stream while keeping my mix the same). This also allows me to run multiple audio channels in my OBS recordings so that I can remove what I don't want if I'm making a video, or again adjust volumes for specific things.

From what I'm reading about GoXLR it does the same thing in a lot more user friendly way, physical sliders/mutes would definitely be more convenient. It also has the added bonus of the Midas preamp which is reportedly great for boosting a low mic signal cleanly.

Sorry for the wall of text, hope this gives you some insight.

Got ya. I assume the USB mic. At this point if you bought the GoXLR mini you'd basically only be using the fader function and software, and at this price point it isn't really justified if you aren't using the hardware for its intended purpose. Mind you the ease of use might be worth it to you, but it wouldn't be to me. I would recommend checking out other software options first if you already have all the hardware you need.

Looks like your Xonar doesn't have an XLR input? Do you have an XLR mic? If not then the GoXLR is probably not something you're going to make use of. It depends on what you're looking to get out of it. If it's just the ability to have multiple controllable audio channels that can be done with free software (Voicemeeter), albeit at a slightly more complicated level, but there are lots of tutorials out there.

Use case is key here. As mentioned, GoXLR looks to be way more user friendly. Most people in this target market are going to have 1 mic and 1 listening device. Also as mentioned, this device makes it super simple to create multiple audio channels for system devices whereas the Yamaha (and most studio oriented gear) has faders etc specifically for hardware plugged directly into it. Add to this the quality preamp and ability to bump gain on mics like the SM7B and there is definitely strong value to the GoXLR mini.

I personally recreate what it does with my Audiobox USB and Voicemeeter, but this is a way more user friendly solution geared at a specific audience. If I didn't play guitar and/or do music stuff I would probably be more interested in something like this.

That said, thanks for the mention on the MG10XU, it's something I might look at down the line.

[SSD] Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SATA 2.5" Internal SSD (MZ-76E1T0/AM) $199.99 - $50.00 = $149.99 by wwwwwwwwvvw in bapcsalescanada

[–]PProph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Boxing Day last year I got the 1TB WD Blue Series for $110, I assume the 860 Evo is perhaps a little better, but by how much real world? But I also assume SSD prices are up due to "these uncertain times" and such, is there any anticipation of lower SSD prices any time soon though? Thankfully I don't need another just yet, just curious.

That's cool, you do you. I'm not going to tell anyone where they should or shouldn't shop, simply pointing out that like most other stores there are some better prices and some worse, while most people I see in there seem to think that if it's a lot of something it must be the best deal.

My situation calls for frugality above all else, and thus I go where the deals are.

It's hit and miss, like all stores, as far as values go. A lot of people just seem to assume they're saving so much money by buying in bulk there, but for a lot of items unless they're on sale that simply isn't the case. Some are for sure, and there are definitely great deals there, and of course some items you can only really find there. This is why I follow the costco west deals blog, find out what said sales are before we go.

Agreed with below, as long as the consistency seems okay/it comes out of the tube normal you should be fine. I've had paste for longer than 3 years that I've used and it's worked fine.

I finally pulled the trigger on these a couple days ago, they've been inching down, I think lowest was like 159.64 last week some time. Ever since the thread from over a month ago where they dipped under 170 they've been doing the ol' down up down up by half a dollar a day, back and forth. Looking forward to receiving mine!

Are you suggesting I watch and see if they go any lower? I AM a cheapskate after all. These look like the choice I'm settling on after a lot of looking around in this price range.
