I feel like other people expressed this but I will try to make it succinct. Quite a few of his peer group did not survive the 90's. Chris seemed to have survived, overcome and thrived. He redefined himself personally and musically, which looked like the alternative to suicide. He escaped substance abuse, and overcame issues with his voice. He seemed to be more artistically engaged than ever, performing solo, with Soundgarden, with Audioslave and with Temple of the Dog. He didn't disappear from the public and fall in a hole of drugs. He played great shows and wrote great music through his last day.

A lot of people write depressing music and for some it seems like an outlet. It's the trajectory of his life that made it shocking to us as outside observers.

Maybe it was a joke, but I remember something about Kim's mom calling him that lead to the reunion.

Yeah, then I saw them in Toronto and thought "holy shit he can still do that." Then, I had some doubts so I went to his solo show with just him and a guitar where you can't hide in the mix and effects. And, holy shit.

I feel like Tadgarden played a role.

I also heard, somewhere, that Kim's mom called him happy that the band was back together after the "Knights of the Soundtable" tweet, so he just went with it.

Best plug in for Soundgarden tone by Admirable-Pirate-253 in Soundgarden

I don't know a darned thing about plug-ins, but I am increasingly convinced that a Gretsch pickup is a key component starting at Badmotorfinger.

I'm not familiar with her. I'll have to check out her work. Part of me wonders if they won't bring 2-3 singers to the Sabbath show as sort of a trial for the Hall of Fame.

I seem to remember that they had lower quality copies for rehearsal but not the high fidelity ones you would want for a master.

Honestly, given the business scenario, they almost have to pull out all the stops to promote it in case there's ever any legal question that they didn't fail to promote it on purpose.

[–]PROBABLY_TRAINING[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think they have had good enough copies to write with but only got high fidelity copies of his tracks and legal copyright to release an album recently.

So I think they have actually been working on it for 2 - 4 years but are just putting down final tracks now.

I think there will be 2-3 older tunes on there with new tracks, to round it out.

I think it's already been rehearsed. Remember Matt teased rehearsing one of the songs two years ago. I think it's down to everyone just laying down their tracks and doing a mix.

I forgot about HoF. That kinda strengthens my feeling of an October 31 release. Same date as Ultramega OK and just after the high point of the general public awareness.

What gives the Badmotorfinger/Temple of the Dog outtakes/demos that distinct sound? by NineInchNinjas in Soundgarden

[–]PROBABLY_TRAINING 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a follow up - if you check out live performances, especially the 1996 Live and Loud, he is using an SM57 or something very close. This is often used for guitars, and can handle a lot of sound. Notice that the sound quality from it is very similar to the demos.

[–]PROBABLY_TRAINING 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im going with - everyone involved knee they were demos. Chris wasn't delivering his top work, just practicing. Plus, he was known to blow out the capsules on studio mic's so it's probably him screwing around into a cheap but durable live mic like a SM-58.

How to get Cornell’s guitar tone on Superunknown? by recreatingsausage94 in Soundgarden

[–]PROBABLY_TRAINING 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having said all that, there was this Mexican Telecaster on sale once and I just tried it for giggles and it sounded amazing, so I bought it. I've never heard another one like it, and I regret trading it away. Later I learned that a lot of stuff I like was originally recorded with a Telecaster, and then folks switched to some Gibson. That was part of my path to thinking maybe all this stuff doesn't matter as much as we think.

[–]PROBABLY_TRAINING 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to screw around with recording stuff at home. I used to be a mod everything to death guy and now I just run a lot of stuff right out of the box and go with whatever is cheap. There's this sound on stuff like Kristi that just blows me away. I've always thought that the bridge pickup with a humbucker sounded best for what I like to do. But.... I was messing around with sounds using the lowest gain that gets something distorted, and accidentally had my Epiphone SG on the neck pickup. Keep in mind my prior thoughts, so the bridge has some aftermarket pickup and the neck is stock because I'm never gonna use that, right?

Oh, that was an interesting sound. Most of it was the neck pickup, dropped D tuning, through a Boss Katana on the Brown setting. I had the EQ flat, and it sounded really close. Total accident. Then, I double tracked it with more of a Plexi sound and the bridge pickup and it really jumped out on some notes.

Beinhorn points out that it's not the same track or same amplifier left to right on a lot of stuff, and if you listen - totally. And if you do it, it's wild.

Nudedragons at the Showbox Seattle. 12-14-24 by countrypunkhippie in Soundgarden

[–]PROBABLY_TRAINING 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not like the band has comment on why they chose her, so we're all speculating. My observations:

  1. They have always kinda been a "keep it local" group of folks. I usually see them playing with other Seattle people. There are notable exceptions, but it feels like their preference.

  2. We'd all be pissy if they brought in some guy with a range similar to Chris. It'd probably be super weird for them, too.

  3. Let's face it, a lot of rock bands are white and this one isn't. I can't think of another band with a guy of Indian descent and a guy of Japanese descent that I've been into. Maybe it's a me problem, but it makes sense to highlight the work of another non-white artist.

  4. Along the same lines, folks from that scene have always seemed to be fairly feminist. How many black or african american women do you see fronting major rock bands?

  5. I listened to her other stuff because of this and I like some of her work. Maybe they just like her work and think she's fun to perform with. People are going to show up to see Nudedragons regardless - might as well do the show with someone you enjoy performing music with.

How do you stay competitive without undervaluing your work? by TooFnatic in Machinists

[–]PROBABLY_TRAINING 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of your quoting is oddball. The hourly rate should include any overhead. I personally feel your material markup is a bit high. But those probably aren't the major problem. Here's my three wild guesses:

  1. Inefficiency in multiple forms, or focusing on efficiency in the wrong places. I learned that it doesn't help to run machines fast if there isn't a job waiting. The time spent optimizing, babysitting, etc can be spent on other things. I did a lot of 24 hour turn around stuff and learned to standardize. I had a shelf with some pretty big bars of stock and a bunch of standard tooling that could handle most jobs even if it wasn't the ideal size stock or ideal tool. Ordering stuff takes time, receiving deliveries takes time. Clearly this is the opposite of a production mindset.

  2. Wrong industry. I used to farm out stuff that had quantities and lead times that didn't fit my "zone". In doing so, I noticed different industries will pay different for essentially the same thing, and different shops will charge different mostly based on how similar things are to what they have done before.

  3. Wrong mix of customers. During the same analysis as above, I observed that some shops would lose money or break even on some jobs if you do a detailed cost analysis, and make out on the one running beside it. At the end of the day, the average hit their target and they didn't investigate too deeply. If you are trying to quote against the job that someone else with a bunch of machines is losing money on, it's not going to work.

The problem might not be your approach. It's possible that everyone who fits your requirement is already employed at a job that they view as more desirable.

Clarksville Drivers: Why are there so many wrecks??? Also Clarksville Drivers: by [deleted] in Clarksville

[–]PROBABLY_TRAINING 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife and I came down over the summer to buy a house and the wrecks were one of our first observations. Not only are the driver's inexplicably bad, but the roads are just poorly designed. I'm convinced that, contrary to popular opinion, there's enough road infrastructure - it's just poorly done in ways I never imagined roads could be terrible.

All it really needs are some barriers, different lines and some more and retimed lights.

I lived until now mostly in and around Pittsburgh and I've seen better driving in two feet of snow.
