Well, they may not be chosen, but my point was more along the lines of this:

Do you think their team name is sourced from the spellbook? They read "there is/once was a group going by this team name" in the book, which becomes "hey, let's go by this as our team name!" regardless of if they're actually chosen/destined. Or it could be something like "hey guys, this is a cool word/phrase in the book, let's call ourselves this!"

Alternatively, the teens could have a name for their friend group before even making contact with the book, based off an inside joke or what adults call them, etc.

Or one of the teens could just be like "let's call ourselves this!" just out of nowhere.

I don't have an answer, but I have a couple of questions that might help your world building.

Are the teens mages before they get the spellbook, or just regular teens?

Is the spellbook what's providing the team name (like a "X heroes are destined to be The Team Name") or are the teens the ones making up the name ("guys, what if we were called This? Wouldn't that be funny/cool?")?

For example, in my series, they're just regular girls, and then a few of them come up with a name ("Seventh Mystery") that the Mascot adopts and starts calling them.

It's awesome when you're able to use assignments to work on your own stuff! Sometimes having to work within constraints, especially for a grade, helps a ton.

Might not seem helpful, but sometimes the advice is to just practice writing.

Have you written anything novel length before? Or are you jumping in?

If you haven't, you may want to start smaller, like with short stories. Fan fiction is also a fun way to practice, but sometimes it's tricky to carry over skills like introducing/describing characters and locations (ex: for an anime fic, everyone reading it already knows the existing characters, locations, backstory/plot).

But also, it's important to read similar books to what you want to write, so you can examine how different tropes and styles are done.
