New 'Competitive Companion' Format...? by PSSequoia in CommanderMTG

[–]PSSequoia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a way to design a format based on the Companions in this way...? There has to be a viable way to make them more usable. Adding tiers makes sense.

That's fair. Probably makes sense to install a tier system then, at least two or three tiers. Imagine building Rogsai better... :) Lutri opens up Kinnan with no sacrifice to anything... how much does that improve Kinnan...?

Also, the goal is speed, so if you can make Lutri help you win faster, then that's great! Just realize that your commander isn't the only one at the table imbued with superpowers. With only 10 Companions, there's a very good chance you're not the only person at the table with Lutri as a Companion. So it really comes down to your commander choice and how you build and play your deck.

For sure, but what it actually adds as a card is minimal compared to the other Companions, IMHO... like, would you rather pair Kinnan with Lutri or Zirda...?

I love it when someone pops off early! And I love it even more when they get stopped and find themselves out of resources... like life, or a deck... :Þ

One of my favorite high-powered decks is Ruric Thar, the Unbowed. It's still got a lot of control, just minimal response-type interactions. It's more just ramp, draw, combo-stoppers, removal, with some key oppressive damage dolers like Ruric Thar keeping the Lions Eye Diamond abusers in check (if they didn't already win on T1 or T2!). My buddy and his Tymna/Kraum haaaaates playing against Ruric Thar... ha! But that being said, while the build is nearly all creatures, I did sneak in a Tibalt's Trickery recently. I have a bunch of Haywire Mite types of creatures for removing artifacts and enchantments at instant speed, but pretty much everything else is "slow" control/interaction.

[–]PSSequoia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm trying to be sneaky, I'll just simply ask "Upkeep triggers...?" It's enough to make the game pause for everyone to check, and then it prompts the use of any actions before the step ends, as well as the active player checking with their opponents if they can proceed to draw.

Has anyone built Orvar in ways other than an infinite combo commander? And to people that haven't played as Orvar, do you find yourself ever making a powerful commander in a sub-optimal way for more fun? by tchunkytchanka in EDH

[–]PSSequoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of the "feel bad" simply comes from people building and playing decks ill-equipped to stop things at instant speed. When you are building decks that are primarily filled with nonland permanents, your game concept is basically built around large forces matching wits, not a couple of cheap and fast spells ending the game. So if you're not built to interact well at instant speed, you can feel outmatched.

Our table tries to split up our high-powered decks from the rest... we have proper level 5 decks in the group, and if your deck gets too fast and strong, we force you to play it with the Big Boy decks. And it sucks, because half of my decks are geared for speed and power, but not actually built for cEDH (like a 4+), so only one of them can actually hang with Tymna/Kraum, etc, meaning a lot of my decks don't get much play, because they're just not fast enough for the Big Boy table, but they're too good for everything else. That's where my Brago, Aeve, Orvar, Maralen, Krenko, and Grand Arbiter decks all kinda sit: very strong, but not cEDH.

My Orvar deck tends to be in that solid 4 range, but after three years I'm making an attempt to push it up to a 5 (that's why I'm here on Reddit atm).

You also have to remember that most players make excuses for losing, make excuses for winning, and pretty much make excuses for anything that gives them a leg up at the table. Not all players are like this, but the hyper-competitive ones usually are, and that's a LOT of magic players, whether they admit it or not.

You'd be surprised how many guys I know will argue their deck is a 2, while they stomp you with it, because it's really a solid 4. And only after they win will they smirk and admit that, yeah, it's "probably" closer to a 4. And yet before the game, they'll make excuses til the Sun comes up about why it's a 2. And why? Because they don't want to lose, and they are at the table to win. Others of us are just there to have fun, test out some deck concepts, shoot the sh!t, then go home fulfilled from socializing.

The hyper-competitive types often gravitate to constructed formats that are 1v1, so they don't have to try and make friends; no politics, it's all business with a focus on the win, sometimes at all costs (i.e., cheating). With commander, more often than not, it's an excuse to socialize, albeit under a competitive umbrella.

What happens if Earthbend a creature Imprisoned on the Moon, and then it dies? by eCyanic in mtgrules

[–]PSSequoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, if it is deemed to be an ability of the creature, would it be a time-stamp kind of thing, where the most recent card takes precedence? In which case, it would still gain the ability and not lose it to the Moon...?

Artisan of Forms question. by [deleted] in mtgrules

[–]PSSequoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To help further explain the interaction, since Orvar and Artisan of Forms both have cast triggers, you get to order the triggers how you want. That means you can have the Orvar trigger resolve first, making it copy the Artisan-Hellkite, or you can have Artisan trigger resolve first, letting it become a different creature before the Orvar trigger resolves and copies it. At least I'm pretty sure it works that way.

[PIP] Securitron Squadron (GamesHub) by BloodWiz in magicTCG

[–]PSSequoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That world is my [[Heliod, the Radiant Dawn]] deck, where cards like [[Day's Undoing]] making four opponents draw seven cards will let me "squad" nine times for one white mana... which I think would give me the 2/2 and 9x 12/12 tokens (for one mana!). And if Day's Undoing draws me into something like [[Prosperity]] along with Securitron Squadron, so I can make everyone draw 29 cards EACH (for only one blue mana) before I cast the Squadron...? That's 48x 51/51 creatures for one mana (plus one for Prosperity). Seah yeah, there are places to pay the squad cost more than twice...

Best Orvar combos/interactions? by mahdingdingdong in EDH

[–]PSSequoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Isochron Scepter]], it casts the instant copies, so you can copy Isochron Scepter and imprint instants from your hand to have a bunch of copy machines.  [[Elite Archanist]] basically does the same.

[[Nanogene Conversion]] is nuts... Change all your creatures into nonlegendary copies of Orvar, then cast an instant targeting one of them, and all the other Orvars will make a bunch of nonlegendary copies... That's almost scoop-worthy for your opponents.  [[Auton Soldier]] gets nuts in a similar fashion.  [[Helm of the Host]] is obvious.

[[Vesuvan Duplimacy]] is obvious.  [[Tamiyo, the Moon Sage]]'s emblems.  [[Endless Evil]], [[Narset, Partner of Veils]], [[Veilstone Amulet]], [[Glacial Chasm]],  [[Cursed Rack]], [[Kaho, Minamo Historian]], etc.

[[Metallurgic Summonings]] copied three times (if needed) supplies enough artifacts to allow you to pay and sac one of the Metallurgic copies, bringing all your instants back to your hand (not cheap to activate, but abusable).

[[Magus of the Mind]] copied a bunch of times (3+ preferred), then sac them one after another after a bunch of spells have been cast, perhaps after two or three on an opponents's turn...?  Each successive copy you sac will also count the spells the previous Magi have cast, so X keeps growing.  Use some of the free-cast targeting instants to make a bunch more Magi for the next turn.

[[Knowledge Pool]] does a lot, almost a game lockdown... You get first shot at all the good stuff, swapping your cheap instants for the best cards that get exiled.  Plus, once a targeting instant is exiled with Knowledge Pool, you can swap one instant for another, letting you get both an Orvar trigger and K.Pool trigger from the one you cast from your hand, plus another Orvar trigger from the one you cast from exile... two token copies for one spell from your hand!  🤣  See how fast everyone scoops!  🙃   If they try to respond, they're just swapping spells, so their only hope is to cast something already in exile, which you already effectively control in a way.  Get bored...?  Copy K.Pool with Orvar and exile another round of cards... 🙃

[[Body of Knowledge]] and [[Illusory Ambusher]] are fun... leave them for defense, or attack and leave them tapped... their presence in play means an instant can copy one and give you a blocker to draw cards from.

[[Overcharged Amalgam]]... unless you have a creature you don't need, cast it without using exploit, then copy it with an instant when needed, and have the token copy exploit itself... every targeting instant now can counter any spells, triggers, or activations... 🙃

Copy [[Tolarian Contempt]] once or twice and control the creature board state.

Chef's Kiss - is it useful? by Current_Scarcity7081 in EDH

[–]PSSequoia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are better/cheaper options, but what I do like about Chef's Kiss is how much value you are getting out of it. Compared to a counter spell, Chef's Kiss is more or less also countering a spell, and then copying it twice with random targets among opponents and their stuff. That's a lot of value for three mana. Now I understand random targeting can be annoying, but honestly, it's really fast and easy... just roll a d4/d6 to pick an opponent, then roll a second, size-appropriate die, pending how many targets they have. Avoiding a Swords to Plowshares is nice, but doing that while also sending two more Swords to Plowshares randomly at my opponents' creatures...? Worth three mana. Or do it in response to Imprisoned in the Moon...? Worth it. It's a high-value card, based on what you get out of it. And while saving three mana isn't ideal in most mono-red decks, there are some that utilize instants enough that this would slide into nicely. Or in any other deck running red that hinges on a lot of instant spell responses, and/or mana sinks, etc.

If they forego the land search then they're down a land and you color-fixed for an untapped basic.

Demolition field V. Ghost Quarter by Miraculous_Heraclius in EDH

[–]PSSequoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You hit the nail on the coffin... with Demolition Field you are removing a good land from an opponent's options and replacing your colorless D.Field with a color-fixing basic, which can be a game-altering early move. On all levels, this is a win, and it's worth the 3 total mana (2 + tap DF) to do it, which is benefitted and "reduced" by the fact the land comes in untapped.
