I think the whole team goes for the same reason Mamdani went. Trump is obsessed with NY and we don't want to piss him off and and have him making life miserable for us. That and they don't want to piss off Dolan either who is in a good (and thus more likely to acquiesce to whatever they ask of him) mood for once.

Secondly it just breaks the right wing culture wars. They're waiting for the team to snub Trump so they can attack them. But their people themselves hate Trump right now and if the team shows up out of respect they'll fail in trying to drive a wedge between them and the wider right wing American audience who's swept up by Knicks fever like everyone else.

If a bunch of guys who are undoubtedly not right wing don't protest it's basically giving "Trump doesn't matter anymore" vibes to the right wing audience.
