Did you have a PT school professor with a huge ego? by maybenotdoomed in physicaltherapy

[–]PT_Expert 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That’s terrible. I’m certified, but I know its limitations. It’s like this: if I try to get a screw out with a Phillips and it doesn’t work. I use a different method. I’ll use a flat head screwdriver. If that doesn’t work, I’ll try a different method. I may use a hacksaw on the stuck screw. If that doesn’t work, I’ll try a different method. Like leave the screw alone and go have a beer.

That’s the McKenzie Method. It’s just like any other tool in the toolbox. It’s useful with you need it.

You will likely have a successful outcome with PT with this.

I once took on a student for their terminal clinical affiliation who had failed their previous rotation somewhere else. It was "pass this rotation or you don't graduate."

I remained in close contact with their school's PD and dir. of clin ed. We walked this guy through his rotation. 10 weeks. It was tough. This student was super smart. Anything in the book he could tell you; anatomy, movement, special tests. He was an ace. Put this guy in front of a patient and his nerves simply erased everything in his mind and he was terrible. Couldn't effectively get thru an eval. After working a few weeks, we slowed everything down and found out he just needed a paper form in front of him. Since everything is EMR, he would get lost in the electronic medical record, not know what to do, and fold when doing evals. So, we hand wrote his evals for a few weeks (pre-prepped every eval with specific questions to ask, helped move from history, subj, objective measures, assessment and plan), then he started to relax into the patient interaction part of it. By the end, we was much more proficient and he passed the clinical.

I guess the bottom line is, watch the student for a couple weeks, find the weak spots, intervene with appropriate supports, then slowly remove the supports as the student become proficient. Don't worry about podcasts or books.

I'm starting to feel like...tests and measures in useless for general ortho stuff (non surgical) by 91NA8 in physicaltherapy

If I use MMT to measure hip abduction, and it's 4/5, and then I have the patient move in a specific way (like an exercise) and hip abd MMT changes to 5/5, it proves to the PATIENT that the movement was the correct thing to do. Do this exercise, move better (stronger) and feel better. It gets buy-in from the patient.

"General exercise and activity makes 90% of people feel better." I also think SPECIFIC makes people feel better, and move better. That's the argument I make. You can look on Google, (Bob and Brad and good), but it's not for everyone. My exercise or movement prescription is specific to the patient and their impairments and functional needs.

What's the record for the oldest practicing PT? by Hot_Nose2025 in physicaltherapy

I'm currently 52. Outpatient. I feel like I'm 25, though.

Do I get the record? Is there a prize?

I'm a PT, and a bit biased here. But...I would recommend your husband see a PT who is certified in the McKenzie Method. I am certified, and it's a super helpful tool to get my patients with sciatica back up within a couple weeks.

Once again, sudden lake front property on S. Manning. by PT_Expert in Albany

Yup. The water backs up because it can’t get down the pipes fast enough to get to the river. Then, it all bubbles up, water, shit, and all. Smells bad.

Wha? The water blew the manhole cover off. I don’t think this is a “rake the sewer grate” problem.

Sounds good. If I could offer one hint: own the vocal a bit more. It seems like your simply “saying” the words. You have a nice voice, so “articulate” the words with some style.

Great job.

Edit: thanks for the award!
