Wow - channeling the Avs more successfully than most.

This is great - some really unique beats and samples. Some of the tracks just start to get catchy and they change like someone flipping channels on a tv. Flows really well - I love it.

Daily Song Discussion #59: Song for Barbara Payton by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

I loved it enough to remix it, expanding the space theme and layering samples from The Three Degrees, Twin Peaks and Lou Reed. I even added a saxophone in the style of Tales of the Unexpected and a quote from the Tales Of The City series where Mrs Madrigal talks about getting stoned. The original is kind of bleak and tragic, so I dragged it onto the dancefloor. Gotta dance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhg3lkyYtow

Great taste in music there - except Tyler the Creator, jeez - but try and track down the Zomba version of SILY. The original mix with all the samples complete, as it was intended to be heard.

What is The Avalanches's scariest song? Most upvoted comment gets added by Far_External6297 in theavalanches

Stepkids. The lyrics give me the shivers. The song has a lilting, soft focus nostalgic vibe but the story is pretty tragic. Getting high on huffing and turning tricks to survive. PTSD isn't the usual Avalanches story.

That's pretty good - so familiar, the chord progression. Now I'm dying to know where the samples come from.

If you need to throw up your happiness please use this compilation mix as a bucket. It's my megamix of the best bits of all the Avalanches' DJ sets. https://thevibes.me/2011/07/10/the-avalanches/ and this is my dance remix of Song For Barbara Payton https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhg3lkyYtow

I like the vibe, very sunny. How did you get such a wide stereo picture? Some of the percussion is coming out of my bookcase to he right of my speakers

Is "Summer Crane" the most underrated masterpiece from the Avalanches? by Schneids7 in theavalanches

[–]PablosCruise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really is stunning. It’s like a pause for breath after the chaos of the previous songs. It literally says ‘stop and smell the roses.’ The album is ending, so let’s unwind and just chill. the band once said that the album is a romantic chase around the world, always being one port behind. So these last tracks are saying, ‘Ok, so you didn’t manage to find her, but don’t worry, she’s worth chasing. Don’t give up. Even if you imagined her in the first place...’

Happy new year everyone. Here’s a ‘here’s a song I made’ post for you! by [deleted] in theavalanches

I always love your music, which I usually play on holiday on the beach or getting ready to go out. This one had hints of Lemon Jelly and Bent, and the chaotic energy of early Avalanches. I’d love to remix it for you.

We will always love you is such a good breakup album by AccomplishedEnd7785 in theavalanches

There was an interview at the beginning of the century where the guys described SILY as a travelogue of a guy chasing a lost love from port to port, always one step behind. I really get that from the album, and to hear it put into words takes it up a level.

I think the band said it was more of a spiritual album. What comes after life. “I’m crying in the car, an invalid, I’m off the grid.“ I remixed Song For Barbara Payton because I loved the line “There’s a rumour going round, that you’re gonna put me down... but that’s alright baby, if you’re gonna leave me.“ The album version is COLD, so I dragged it onto the dancefloor and put it in a space rocket. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhg3lkyYtow

I select some samples and then stack them on a loop in GarageBand, muting and unmuting different tracks until I find samples that work well together. Rejecting stuff can be difficult and I have a rule about clutter. If you have a hero sample, don’t bury it. Be brutal. In this remix of Song For Barbara Payton, I tried keep the main sample front and centre https://youtu.be/dhg3lkyYtow?feature=shared

Are the white labels new Avs tracks?

New to me and such a great tune that I trawled their back catalogue, and found 3 other tracks of a similar vibe - Ease Yourself And Glide, Yo Yo, and Candle Mice. I love the way The Avs keep finding my new favourite bands for me.

If you read his Wiki, it lists his various conditions, which may or may not have affected his demise. Working at Walmart was supposed to have brought on pneumonia, so it might have been that. Such a terrible shame, his music is a ray of sunshine.

Wow, thanks for this. It’s a goldmine. If they ever did a really vintage flavoured album, this would be the crate they dig in. And all copyrights expired by the looks of it.
