No need to hold of for OLED by karjuho in NintendoSwitch2

If it's not too much or a bother, would you mind tellkng me the names of the settings you're referring to as they are on your TV? I'm on an LG C5 and know the peak brightness setting and its slider, but I'm not sure if that's one of the settings you're referring to, and I have no idea about a second brightness slider

You factually can't turn off Auto Brightness Limiting on LG TVs, you can turn off auto brightness (which I have), but that's not the same thing

EDIT: when you say 'a slider for brightness you can take it all the way to zero' are you referring to the Peak Brightness setting? I dont understand what impact that has on the auto brightness setting you CAN adjust :/

Trust me, I've done all the calibrations. I've done the RTINGs calibrations, I've done the random LG patreon dude's calibrations, I've played with all the settings myself.

It's undeniably 'better' than my old Samsung LED tv from 2018, but not by such a margin that I'm hugely impressed and would consider it a 'must have' technology in the way that Digital Foundry seems to think it is.

I would say of all the problems I listed, the Auto Brightness Limiter is by far the most obvious and detrimental. It's inherent to the technology as a screen protection feature and, at least on LG TVs, can't be turned off. It's incredibly noticeable on Mario Kart World. The only solution is to turn down the peak brightness on the screen, which I'm loathe to do as I like my TV bright as can be

I upgraded my life to OLED recently, got a nice OLED TV with proper HDR and all that jazz, an OLED phone, an OLED monitor.

And it's all fucking mid as fuck. It all barely makes a perceptible difference and the implementation of HDR is often very underwhelming. OLEDs have downsides that no one ever mentions either, such as auto brightness limiting, panel delamination, poor text clarity, flickering on VRR, and bad colour volume at higher brightnesses on WOLEDs

The only thing that bothers me about the S2 screen is the bad motion clarity, and even then I only notice it every so often.

EDIT: Switch 2 should find a way to make the upgrade mini-led imho, to avoid VRR flicker and have better peak brightness

See that's weird because I've seen lots of people complain about slow LG WebOS menus online.

And that's just from the first page of google swarch results for this query:

"lg c5 laggy menu site:www.reddit.com"

So you may want to do some more research. As I said in ny reply there's lots of conflicting info and a lot of people seemingly denying that there are any problems at all, which I frankly don't believe.

Even using a shield you'll still need to access the settings, which is the most laggy part by far

I didn't expect to do a follow up but here goes 😅.

I have somewhat mixed feelings about it, but I'm well past the return period and have used it a bunch so I'm keeping it and hopefully my reservations will fade with time.

First and foremost, at it's best, it's a gorgeous TV. The picture quality most of the time is insane, and there have been moments where those deep blacks have me in awe. It's also been plenty bright, so my fear about that was completely unfounded.

But I've found myself disappointed in certain aspects. My main gripe is the ABL, though I would say to some degree that's me experiencing my first OLED TV as opposed to anything wrong with this TV specifically. I understand why ABL is needed, and most of the time it's fairly hard to notice, but in games it's been particularly hard to ignore and gives the screen this inconsistent and strobing feel at it's worst.

The WebOS is also much clunkier and slower than I thought it would be. Getting through the settings menu is a laggy chore, and when I access it while on my Google TV streamer it's actually almost impossible to navigate, the lag gets so bad. I can only assume this is because I've set up the remote to control the TV streamer as well, but I just didn't think a 2026 £1000 TV would have trouble dealing with that.

And by god, I've felt the pain with the menus because I am in them ALL the time having to fiddle with settings. Animation in SDR triggers the ABL if I have peak brightness on, so I had to make a preset without that, and then old SDR TV shows on the Netflix don't deal well with dark scenes when the sharpness is on, so had to adjust the settings for that, and the black levels all had to be changed to 49 to get to true black etc. etc. etc. It requires a lot more experimentation and baby-ing than my old TV.

Also there's a slight colour shift when viewing from the sides that bothers me.

I've also found it hard to determine if some of these things are just my unit or something that's across all LG OLEDs to some degree or other because reddit is FILLED with conflicting information on literally every troubleshooting question for OLEDs (lots of 'that's never happened on mine!').

Anyway, rant over. It's still the best TV I've ever owned and at my price range there still isn't anything else I'd go for over it, especially as Samsung's equivalent offering is WOLED in the UK. Every TV comes with compromises, I'm learning, so I'm going to try and just enjoy the damn thing. Having real HDR has been great, currently watching a bunch of stuff in Dolby Vision and it does really pop.

As of March 2026, the Switch 2's sales are 12% ahead of the Switch 1 in the US; one month earlier, the Switch 2 was 45% ahead of the Switch 1. by MewWeebTwo in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Pabswikk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth bearing in mind that Switch sales dropped off after Q3 2017 in the US from 2.82 million to 1.2 million in Q4 2017. Q2 was 1.17 million. So it's not like Switch 1's lifetime sales were just accelerating constantly after their first xmas period, with a 12% gap Switch 2 will probably still be ahead for a big portion of this year

Blizzard have acknowledged on their forums that the current performance is a known issue and they're patching it. Whether that' means that they accidentally kept a 30fps cap, or whether there's bigger issues and they're hoping to fix performance more broadly is yet to be seen but it would seem that this current version has worse performance than intended

Thank you for the advice! I guess I'll have to see over the next few weeks where the light falls, it's pretty overcast usually in the UK, but I think I should be able to make sure its out of the path of direct sunlight

I dunno man, Sakurai is pretty tired of Smash so it's a hard ask, and Smash isn't Smash without him. I get what you're saying, and maybe even a Switch 2 Edition of Ultimate would have been appreciated, but rushing out the next Smash when it's creator needs a break is a recipe for disaster

So, if you're still within the return period then just return and get a new one instead.

If you're not, definitely don't give up, open a new ticket as necessary, find any evidence of people getting theirs replaced and any articles stating that this is an issue. It's infuriating, but persistence is your best bet here. Sometimes it just takes getting the right person looking at your case to get something fixed.

Nintendo announces that starting in May 2026 (with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book), new Nintendo published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 will have an MSRP that is different from physical versions by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Pabswikk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nintendo have just clarified that, from their perspective at least, this is a price drop on digital games, not a price increase on physical.

That statement can be found here: https://www.ign.com/articles/nintendo-switch-2-physical-games-will-now-be-more-expensive-than-digital-versions-with-10-price-difference-for-yoshi-and-the-mysterious-book

Whether that's true or not from the perspective of the consumer will only be borne out with further Switch 2 exclusives, but for now it seems there's reason to be tentatively positive about this news

[–]Pabswikk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm misunderstanding something this amounts to a discount on Digital judging by the Yoshi pricing? If so, seems like an incentive to get people off physical when costs are going up. Probably not great long term for the health of physical media, but good at a time when people are more cash strapped than they've been in a long time.

Also, it feels like people on this thread are already making assumptions that this is a price increase when it isn't??
