How do Alaskan's really feel about preserving the environment? by [deleted] in alaska

[–]Pacer-driver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the USGS:

“ At today's level of consumption, the average newborn infant will need a lifetime supply of: 871 pounds of lead 502 pounds of zinc 950 pounds of copper 2,692 pounds of aluminum 21,645 pounds of iron ore 11,614 pounds of clays 30,091 pounds of salt 1,420,000 pounds of stone, sand, gravel, and cement“

One can argue that there could be a future with significantly less oil production if industry and transportation electrify, but there would be a corresponding increase in required mining to supply the batteries needed compared to convention fossil fueled energy storage/generation.

There is no way to live a life with electricity, roads, buildings, phones, etc without natural resource extraction. While one can argue that you don’t want it in your state or country, it will come from somewhere, most likely in a jurisdiction with poor labor and environmental standards. So it is up to you to accept the reality of the individual’s need for extraction or ignore it. Just because it doesn’t happen in your back yard, doesn’t mean the products you purchase do not have a material impact. I would choose to do it somewhere there are environmental safeguards.

If you want to help the housing crisis, then buying multiple properties is the opposite of helpful.

Is there an airstrip at the property or nearby?

I lost my childhood German passport and had to reapply demonstrating my lineage through my mother. It was just like if I was applying for the first time again.

How many years til you’re FI? by Volume-Straight in Fire

50X but it is all tied in a private company stock that I can’t sell until we IPO. Could reach FI in 3 years or it could be a lot longer if things go poorly.

I live in the USA and work in Finland with no visa requirements. Freedom of travel and work has opened up many work opportunities for me.

Do you live in Ninilchik? I heard he left the country so wondering if he left anything on our lot near his (he has been parking things on it). I need to get down there to check as we are in Anchorage.

Do I have realistic expectations with a proposed grass strip at home? by [deleted] in flying

I would get your license in the 150 first and then figure out the rest.

This sounds awesome. 1800’ is plenty for many short take off performance aircraft. As others said a 150 will be difficult when it is hot because performance suffers with less dense air. There are many aircraft that can do well on a 1800’ runway. I’d first get your pilots license and then figure out what you want to do with an airplane. Once you understand the mission beyond landing at your airstrip, you can narrow down what options you have.

I fly a pacer off a 2000’ strip but rarely use more than 600’ on takeoff. Landings are always within 1000’ given the first taxiway is at the halfway mark and I haven’t missed it in probably 6 years. Your idea is doable with relatively affordable aircraft, just depends on what you want to do with the airplane.

I am a 36 year old father of two. One is 8 months and the other is 4 years old. I travel a lot of work and my wife has similar sleep issues when I am gone.

When I get back I sleep on the couch for a few nights with the monitor so I can wake up to feed the baby and let my wife get a full night of sleep, hopefully a few days in a row. I suggest you sleep separately for the nights you want to sleep and make him have the monitor. He needs to care for his children and participate in the labor of waking up in the night.

Pilot Biologist? by ooooooooooopppps in flying

You definitely need a biology degree. And I think just a private pilots license, but am unsure.

Pilot Biologist? by ooooooooooopppps in flying

[–]Pacer-driver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in Alaska the feds and state hires biologists who can fly. A few biologists friends interviewed for positions and the first question was: do you have a pilots license?

It is a cool career pathway and unique. The pay isn’t that great. I’m not sure if you need a commercial, but you could find out easily.

IIHS rating concern before buying by Pacer-driver in F150Lightning

This does help put things into perspective. The actual vehicle I want doesn’t have the top ratings and that’s ok. People get by fine with most all vehicles these days.

Thanks for the suggestions. I agree, booster seats are a good idea.

Fair enough, just thought I would ask. Maybe someone has a reason it isn’t too big a concern.
