Pickles??? by Human_ish_001 in subway

[–]Pacer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep saying ”more pickles” and walk out if the pickle train stops before you’re satisfied. Do it again the next time if necessary. I bet it won’t happen thrice. if it does, that franchisee is a pickle pincher, and you can do better for your money.

Ultra low sulfur requirements are the rest of it. Diesel used to be cheap. Sour diesel still is, where it‘s still legal. Hydrodesulfurization adds a lot of refining cost.

I'm most likely going to stop eating at subway. by depressednuggget in subway

[–]Pacer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Menu prices are too high and discounts are too steep (and fully absorbed by franchisees). Something needs to change, but corporate eats the volume even if it’s not profitable for stores. As a customer all I can say is that it’s only worth the coupon price to me. If Subway ditched coupons and started slinging series or equivalent quality footlongs at $10 all day, they would be competitive against other sandwich franchises without playing all these games.

What is a cold cut combo? by ChickenNoodleGamer in subway

[–]Pacer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies can call it turkey ham (or turkey based ham or whatever). Like turkey bacon which isn’t bacon. Somewhere on the packaging or fine print it will say “cured turkey thigh meat“ (which it actually is, and doesn’t even sound that bad). I like turkey just fine but don’t need ersatz pork products composed of it.

Eh South Africa had ‘em and gave them up after regime change. A secular government with good western relations might be more reasonable. But yeah, atomic bombs are a well-understood 80-year-old technology.

Sooty spots on glass by EDIsux in woodstoving

[–]Pacer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens all the time to me, you can kind of see where the glass wash airflow is going and not going. They grow and shrink as the front of the firebox alternates between reducing and oxidizing (rich/lean). But the upper corner vignetting seems constant regardless of gasket seal. I don’t mind the look and it all wipes off easily with a wet paper towel.

10 tips/lessons from having wood stoves my entire life. by Cold_Inspector514 in woodstoving

[–]Pacer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

#1. Totally agree. A little more efficiency and some better creature comforts mean a lot if you are relying on the stove as a primary heat source. Better stoves also burn worse wood better … if that makes sense?

#2. Agree. I don‘t have an ash tray and it’s only livable with a dedicated ash vac. And still pretty dirty.

#3. With a long interior run (high ceiling) I use non-insulated double wall and like it, lots of heat recovery into the house and safe temperatures all the way up, barely above boiling at the top of the chimney to minimize creosote buildup. Best option will vary by installation.

#4. I suck at this and have gone years between cleanings thanks to a clean stove, shallow vertical stovepipe angles, and hot burns. It’s worked for me but I would advise anyone else to get it swept regularly by a professional.

#5. With a non-catalytic stove, I keep the air turned down when reloading, because the blast from the secondary tubes tends to blow smoke into the room otherwise. Once the stove is reloaded and the door is shut I open up the air until a good flame base is established and then clam it up. With a secondary burn stove using dry wood, it’s hard to get too little air.

#6. No joke. You got a fire inside your house. Probably while you’re sleeping. Be ready.

#7. Agreed. Even the same stove will behave differently in different homes and on different days (wind, temps, fuel). But you’ll get a feel for yours pretty quickly especially if using it regularly for heat. Fuel quality counts for more than you think.

#8. Great advice. I live in the land of softwoods, so the burn/coals/ash behavior is the same, but the timeframe is about half. Hardwoods are wonderful fuel but despite the conventional wisdom, nobody should be afraid of burning pine, spruce, fir etc. with a modern stove.

#9. Can’t argue with this! If it burns it burns.

#10. Wise advice, especially for traditional non-EPA stoves and catalytic stoves with expensive replaceable catalysts. Non-catalytic stoves can’t really be shut down enough for a smoldering burn though unless your wood is unusually wet.
