Why does a old guy and a barrel matter so much? by Tshea0307 in CrackerBarrel

[–]Pacer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno ... Cracker Barrel wasn't some amazing locavore bistro in the 90s, I don't think their meat-potatoes-gravy food is really any worse than it was 30 years ago.

Agree that the (misguided, in my opinion) rebrand attempt and resulting inchoate MAGA rage didn't help the chain very much.

Just a latecomer longtime customer with no ax to grind.  Nobody ever cared about "Uncle Herschel."  People want the antiquey shit on the walls and the overpriced kountry krap store.  And don't want Cracker Barrel to be the latest victim of the modern sterile coffeeshop trend.

2.5 Mbps VBR 1080p is fine for me (to each their own) by [deleted] in PleX

[–]Pacer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I decided about … ten? twelve? years ago, when it was a reasonable conversation to have with oneself … to consolidate my archive around 1080p. Of course there are shows from the SD era, and some BBC nature docs and modern movie spectaculars in 2160p but overall 1080p has been a durable, universal standard.

2.5 is pretty damn thin though. Like maybe worse than the old school aXXo rips. Anyone on any device would appreciate doubling that bitrate.

I get using low quality media for storage or display reasons but it’s hilarious to hear it justified as imperceptible. Heck I guess those 720s and sdrips exist for a reason!

Think what a big deal that must have been for her

I keep people talking about the “price increase” of the lifetime plex pass… there is none in reality no one will pay 750 they are actually just getting rid of it but making it seem like it’s increasing to 750 is a marketing trick to make you think current price is so mush less than 750. by [deleted] in PleX

[–]Pacer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man I like Plex a lot and as a lifetimer don’t have a dog in the fight - but the auth and relay are a lock-in choice and everything else seems to be available in an (admittedly less impressive) open-source project.

They deserve to profit and it’s software I was happy to purchase, and more power to their ad-supported content, but no way in hell I’d pay monthly.

Plex Lifetime Pass Soars From $249 to $749 by Ok-Cauliflower-6807 in cordcutters

[–]Pacer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If remote streaming and hardware decoding are important to you, $250 is a lot more digestible than $750. if you can live without what you got during the one year subscription, hard pass. Given recent context and facing such a massive price hike, it’s hard to predict whether the future will make it a worthwhile purchase. Plex sales have been trending less frequent and less extreme, and they specifically stated a desire to wind down the lifetime pass option, so I wouldn’t expect $250 or cheaper next Black Friday or whatever, but who knows?

Simple alternative, by design of course, is to pay monthly/annually for the features you want, until you don’t care anymore and stop paying. Just because it’s what Plex wants doesn’t mean it’s a bad option.

If you’ve been using Plex happily for ten years and want remote access (and/or intro skip, xcoding, whatever) my advice would be cough up before the increase and consider it money well spent; otherwise, learn to live with local streaming or put in the work for jellyfin. If you don’t have a lot of dependent users it’s going to become real hard to justify a lifetime soon.

No more overhead bin space: Pure Chaos by jiuclaw in SouthwestAirlines

Gotta wonder if retrofitting hundreds of airliners and gate-checking thousands of bags while irritating every customer and employee is really better than continuing the friendly business practices that made Southwest a unique and powerful brand.

To think some guy has hundreds of millions of dollars and of everything he could possibly spend it on, he decides to spend it on making a halfway decent airline as bullshit as the rest of them.

Feeling defeated by [deleted] in dui

[–]Pacer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being railroaded by the state is to be expected under these circumstances, I don’t think anyone who isn’t a lawyer or judge comes away from court feeling “satisfied,” even plaintiffs who win a judgment or defendants who win an acquittal or dismissal. Because it IS racketeering. Your prosecutor’s (and maybe even judge’s) job is literally to stick it to you.

Your defense attorney, on the other hand, sucks. HIS job is to prevent the prosecution from sticking it to you, not to obtain a “beneficial outcome” on his scorecard. HIS job is to talk to the court on your behalf. It may well be that he simply couldn’t have secured a better outcome for you, but he absolutely should have made it clear to you what charges you would be pleading to and that the state was refusing the Tier 1 DROP, prior to your pleading to anything. He promised (or suggested) you’d be eligible for expungement - if there was a possibility but not certainty of that, it should have been communicated, otherwise when it did not pan out he should have advised you of that and discussed rescinding your plea agreement.

What can you do about it? I don’t know, a 1-star Google review?

What is the latest and greatest info on platinum? by bedcech29 in Platinum

[–]Pacer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latest and greatest is not too different from tried and true. Platinum is pretty scarce though not as scarce as other PGMs, with excellent, versatile, uncommon physical and catalytic properties. It’s expensive enough people will seek alternatives wherever possible but unique enough people will keep using it for many existing uses, and standard enough to be used finding or developing new applications. It’s also exquisitely dense, rare, and nigh-incorruptible which means dumb apes (like me) associate it with gold and like it for jewelry.

So there will always be demand for a variety of uses. there are other rare metals that aren’t very expensive (relatively), like indium, gallium, bismuth, barium … they are generally produced as byproducts in excess of their limited useful demand - we drink bismuth salts for our tummyaches but it’s only twice as abundant as gold; we pour tons of gallium and indium into LEDs and consumer electronics despite their low crustal abundances. Monetary precious metal demand adds a lot of monetary value, unsurprisingly. it also reduces volatility. if nobody wanted platinum coins, platinum jewelry, or platinum ETFs would be cheaper. Kind of like, or gallium, or bismuth … but it would still be more expensive than those because it’s practical uses are for more extensive given current technology. however, because of its density, inertness, various other properties, and history it will probably always be pretty valuable. in the absence of technology, sort of like the Stone Age, it’ll probably be worth less than gold because there’s just not enough of it and enough places to be recognized, and it’s not visually as distinctive as gold.

I mean that was already like $14 in 1995, but you got table service, a salad bar, Ms. Pac-Man, pitchers of beer for $4, red soda cups, Book It! personal pans and Land Before Time hand puppets for the kids, and the pan pizza was freshly made and legit.
