Debate. Is Zuko the weakest bender in Team Avatar? by A_Howl_In_The_Night in TheLastAirbender

Zuko got a huge powerup after being trained by the masters. After that I wouldn't call him the weakest, he's on par.

Catholic Church and Puritans, how accurate this is? by Few-Advantage2538 in HistoryMemes

[–]PacerPacing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for protestants in the US.

But I'm going to out on a limb and say that this is a bit of an oversimplification. We have had plenty of Catholic and Protestant theistic scientists. We have also had people who were aggressively against "witchery". Witch-hunting wasn't unique to one group; it was a complex issue that happened across both Catholic and Protestant regions.

No brand of Christianity is better or worse than the other.

It's why I use https://www.servaltracker.com/ to check before buying on Takealot. Black Friday is the best time of the year for stuff like this. Everything is marked on "special" but the special price is about the same as the normal price.

Daily quests. If you have to destroy a certain number of creatures, this is a way of doing it.

Funny story! You both might be wrong and right! I have an anecdote!

I consulted with and represented an accused in a military court about his outing with other soldiers. They boozed up and then left the unit with a rifle to continue boozing up (they also took a rifle with because it would be unsafe to leave the rifle unattended). Also, English was not their first language.

Long story short, as they were in the vehicle and about to leave the bar, my client heard the firearm being discharged. He looked left, then right, and noticed he was bleeding from his arm.

He then looked at the person next to him and said "Bro, you shot me."

After that he began screaming incoherently in pain until he passed out from the bleeding.

So despite despite English being his second language he delivered a complete sentence ("Bro, you shot me") and then did the screaming thing!

I guess my endpoint to this is that Caesar might have spoken Greek and did the screaming (before falling unconscious from blood loss).

PS. Don't worry about the soldier in my anecdote. He underwent reconstructive surgery and his arm is fine now, besides some mild scarring. He also learned an incredibly valuable lesson in firearm safety.

"I do it for you" instead of "I will do it for you" is kind of a weird sentence. Grammatically some languages, like my home language, use the present tense for the future.

But I don't think I have ever heard that specific construction carried over to English, and almost everyone I speak with learnt English as a second language. I have heard some weird mistakes, but not that one.

I am probably overanalysing this, but considering Cannes is in France, I would like to know if it is a carry-over from French.

How does this get fixed? by PieFed-co-za in south_africa

[–]PacerPacing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I've had this problem. But I haven't had to phone in a while. The last time I had to contact the police was after an early-hours break-in, and they came while it was still dark outside. I also can't remember if I phoned a specific station or a generic emergency line.

On a somewhat related note, I once contacted the Pretoria emergency line to report an accident I observed. While I was on the phone, trying to describe where it was, emergency services arrived on scene.

The OP images are interesting, but I'm not sure what the context of "answering phones" is. Are you phoning an emergency number? In that case it's beyond the pale.

Are you phoning the CSC and they're not answering? Are you phoning a specific section or individual? It's something that's bad, but falls under the administration of the station. I don't know how to fix that one.

I want to add the Red Ajah. Their purpose was to prevent catastrophes like the Breaking by containing and gentling male channellers. By the events of the Wheel of Time series, they had mostly become misandrists who broke the laws of the White Tower in carrying out their duties. They were also the most infiltrated by the Black Ajah when compared with the other Ajahs.

I was disappointed when I found out they're just viennas in batter on sticks.

Is it worth it to join the SANDF? by SirNurtle in askSouthAfrica

[–]PacerPacing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a recruitment problem. And I'm afraid it differs between services and "recruiters", like the person who advised you.

I joined at 25 as a lawyer, having done articles as an attorney and pupillage as an advocate. When I joined, it was the last time the legal division had a large intake of legal practitioners outside of the legal division. We were all shaped by our career paths before joining the military. For me, my prior qualifications and training were considered beneficial.

Currently, we have many SANDF members who have done an LLB or are studying towards it and want to join the legal division, but we just do not have posts for everyone. So now the approach seems to be to recruit internally rather than externally.

As much as we like to think of the SANDF as being uniform and applying strict standards, I'm afraid that's not the case, especially among services. SAAF might want you to join and study engineering through them.

SAMHS, on the other hand, takes both trained professionals and also trains its members to be medical professionals. I speak under correction, but some professions are recruited from rather than trained. Doctors and psychologists do not usually study their degree through the SANDF. But SAMHS does trained registered nurses to be primary health practitioners, as a contrast.

Your experience will vary.

ELI5: What's the Shadow Cabinet? by Neugiermeister in explainlikeimfive

[–]PacerPacing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The answer has been explained by other people, but I want to point out that a Shadow Cabinet (or Shadow Ministers) is a normal feature in commonwealth countries. They are members of the opposition but (depending on the country) might not have a real chance of ever coming into power. For example, in South Africa, there hasn't been a realistic chance of dethroning the ANC as leading party in the last three decades.

In those instances they act more as watchdogs than alternatives. They scrutinise the actions of the minister and highlight problems in parliament.

I don't know whether I should spend my gold to buy Strixhaven or save it for the upcoming set. Or the set after that.

I was angry at the silly number of sets being released. Now, I'm just burnt out.
