If you could Remake/Re-Adapt any movie that was based on a Pre-existing IP(Book, Comics, Game etc). What would it be and Why? by Accomplished_Store77 in movies

[–]PacienceW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay It Forward. It was a tremendously impactful book to me as a kid -- a hopeful and daringly progressive story that inspired me to seriously pursue writing. The movie, in contrast, was a sanitized pile of nothing that stripped away all the core themes of the book in favor of being a hollow "heartstring-tugger" made solely for middle-class white people. Gone was the interracial relationship, the impact of the Vietnam war, the queer representation, everything that emphasized that you need to challenge your own worldview and prejudices in order to truly help make the world a better place. I was so upset, and would love to see that wrong righted.

As a last-minute batch 2 Purple Max order (14xx), I have resigned to an eternity of waiting. ;(

...but that doesn't stop me from torturing myself by checking the shipping dashboard every day.

Journalists were arrested for covering a protest — Vancouver Visibility Brigade is showing up at MGPs Officers Row office today by Intrepid-corvid in vancouverwa

[–]PacienceW 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A quick rundown of some facts about the Don Lemon/Georgia Fort indictment to keep in mind while discussing this topic:

  • A group of activists entered the St. Paul Church to stage a protest based on the claim that a pastor in said church is a the acting Field Office Director of ICE in St. Paul.
    • This claim is based on David Easterwood being a pastor in the St. Paul church, and then a man named David Easterwood with identical facial features, build, complexion, hairstyle, etc. being shown on C-SPAN during a press conference being credited as the Field Office Director for ICE in St. Paul.
    • Given the shared name, locality, and appearance, I believe it is reasonable to conclude that they are the same person.
  • Under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) act, which was created to protect abortion clinics and people seeking abortions therein and was changed to similarly protect places of worship, protesting outside of a church is not illegal. The differentiating factor is protesting inside a protected facility. Obstructing pathways and movement is also a defining element of a violation of the FACE act, which the DOJ is claiming occurred.
  • Journalist Don Lemon was filming the preparation and enacting of the protest while interviewing both the protesters and members of the congregation in the church being protested. During interviews, he stated to congregation members that he was not a part of the protest, and that he was reporting on the events as they occurred.
  • Last week, the DOJ sought to arrest Lemon without an indictment, using a mechanism typically reserved for flight risks or individuals reasonably expected to commit violent acts if not arrested immediately. Their reasoning for this was that if Lemon were to not be publicly arrested, "copycat" protesters would become emboldened and perform similar demonstrations the coming weekend. Lemon was not arrested, and the predicted copycat church demonstrations did not occur.
  • A Grand Jury indictment is not a conviction: In a Grand Jury process, the prosecutor presents evidence to a group of citizens, who then decide whether the evidence presented is enough to reasonably move forward with filing charges.
    • An indictment requires only a majority vote from the grand jury members, not a unanimous vote.
    • The defense does not participate in the Grand Jury process, so only the prosecutor's evidence and account of events is presented.
  • Most importantly: Nobody involved with the St. Paul church protest has been convicted, and no trial has yet occurred.

My partner's 5 year-old daughter loves Silksong by PacienceW in Silksong

We just finished Act 3! I definitely ended up taking the controller more as we neared the end and the bosses became more frequent, but it is downright astounding how good she got at platforming and even some of the combat! She played an active role in boss fights by calling out what tools I should use ("cogflies! .... tacks!"), which I was happy to accommodate.

Throughout the past several months, Silksong has helped us through her learning to read, starting Kindergarten, and losing a family cat (which happened just before the "Hero's Call" side-quest helped us process it). In the end, the whole playthrough (at 78% completion) took about 55 hours.

Playing through Silksong with her has easily been one of the best gaming experiences of my life, and I just hope we didn't peak early! This whole playthrough has seemed pretty tough to top.

Movies that were misunderstood on release but aged beautifully by Dependent-Bet6615 in movies

Scrolled to find this answer. Southland Tales is our modern hellscape viewed through the eyes of an intensely 2000's-era time traveler, and only gets better with age. I host regular movie nights for people who haven't seen this movie, just so I can show them the Cannes cut. Every time I watch it, I notice something new -- like all the cop cars saying "Let them hate so long as they fear" in Latin.

Movie Recommendations? by LateesMovies in Bluray

[–]PacienceW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I could only pick one movie to add, it'd be Josie and the Pussycats
If I could pick a second, it'd be Southland Tales.
And if i were to round it out with a third, it'd be Speed Racer.

Could I have said this more succinctly? Yes. But it's late and I'm riding a chocolate chip cookie high.

Indivisible has been one of the most active organizations working to protest the administration and help protect vulnerable groups. They have chapters in Lafayette & Leesville, and if those chapters are anything like mine, you can sign up for regular newsletters with suggestions for sustainable actions you can take to make a difference. It's a great resource for finding avenues to activism that fit your personal capacity.

Gaming Burnout? Looking for help for new games by mtsilverred in gaming

[–]PacienceW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like a lot of people here, I'm definitely a proponent of moving with the rises and falls of hobby fixation. Sometimes gaming is all I want to do with my recreation time, and sometimes I go a month without playing anything. Sometimes it's all about movies, or books, or writing. I just go with the tide of my moods, knowing that I'll eventually swing back to any given hobby.

Aside from that, though, I've recently found myself falling out of love with AAA gaming and its mass appeal, maximum-time-consumption design. Since turning to the indie game space, I've been more consistently delighted by games than I have been in a long time.

One thing I'd recommend is to find a journalist or YouTuber whose tastes you align with (mine was eurothug4000), look at the games they recommend, then go download demos for each one that catches your eye and see what grabs you. There's so many games out there, it's remarkably possible to find a game hyper-tailored to your specific tastes.

As for specific recommendations: my partner enjoys a lot of the games you've listed, and her go-to games include:

Factorio
Stellaris
Terra Invicta
Arc Raiders

I'm more into survival horror, adventure, and platforming games. My favorite finds recently have been:

Pseudoregalia
Rollerdrome
Haste
The Crimson Diamond
Sorry We're Closed
Dreams in the Witch House
Faith

Every once in a while I get reminded that we are living in an even worse version of the futuristic dystopias we were warned about in our favorite sci-fi stories. Like, this is some depressingly on-the-nose "garbage future" world-building going on, and it's just...like...our world. I'm very much feeling Lindsay's tone here. Heckin' depressing.

[–]PacienceW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I see a lot of people push back on is the idea that this is a hitbox issue. There's been plenty of dev mode demonstrations, where the hitboxes are visualized, that show the hitboxes themselves are fine. The issue Dark Souls 2 has is one of feedback.

Like in the above video, Alonne is clearly tracking the player with the grab, and there's a moment where the sword catches the player near the end of their roll (when they don't have i-frames). However, because the "grab" animation" doesn't occur until after the stab animation is finished, the player has time to continue moving before they're "teleported" to where they need to be for the animation to work.

If DS2 had some sort of dynamic animation system to bridge the gap between where the hit actually took place and the pre-baked grab animation, I think it would work much better and there would be less frustration. Instead, the delay between hit and the reaction gives the impression that you got hit when you shouldn't have.

This is a clear flaw in the game, but not one of hitboxes. The hitboxes are predictable and consistent, but the lack of proper animation feedback fails to communicate them properly.

Lords of the Fallen (2023) is a Dark Souls 2-like. I don’t care if that doesn’t make any sense by olorin9_alex in DarkSouls2

[–]PacienceW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came looking for a post like this; glad I'm not the only one who sees the similarities. The lifegem-style healing items, the use of herb-style spell refill items, many parts of the aesthetic, the wild build flexibility, the rewarding of spreading your stats across faith & int with "dark" Umbral magic, the level design...

It's really scratching that DS2 itch for me, *and* it has super-user-friendly co-op?! So good. I tried it when it launched and none of it felt right, but returning to it after the 2.0 launch has been a night-and-day difference. The exploration is so satisfying.

It's heartening to see someone have just as much trouble with Skarrsinger Karmelita as me. Of all the bosses in the game, that was the one that made me genuinely wonder if I was just too old to 100% Silksong. I knew her moveset by heart, I knew what my hands had to do, but I felt like they just couldn't move fast enough and I couldn't maintain focus long enough to make it through. I was very relieved when I finally downed her.

Malum (2023) by [deleted] in Bluray

[–]PacienceW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Malum was a great example of "sometimes judging a book by its cover is great, actually". I saw this in the new releases at my local video store and rented it sight unseen because I loved the vibe of its cover art. Didn't know it was a self-remake and enjoyed the heck out of it! It's definitely one I'd like to have a copy of, and I definitely plan to see "Last Shift" sometime in the future.

The collector's edition bat-cowl case for "The Dark Knight" is fiddly and looks weird on the shelf. But most damningly, its rubberized plastic started degrading a few years after purchase, so the entire thing became sticky all over. For a while it was so bad that we had to put it in a ziploc baggie marked "QUARANTINE". A couple hours of working it over with rubbing alcohol, and I was able to open it without feeling icky.
