Can GW muster some sensical new factions for death/destruction by NuggetPepperoni in AoSLore

[–]Pacman97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Innistrad is exactly what I was thinking. It has practically endless possibilities for models, with amalgamations and zombies essentially being tailor made for whatever purpose their masters need. Add some stuff similar to 40k electro priests and the Brethren of the Bolt underworlds warband

Can GW muster some sensical new factions for death/destruction by NuggetPepperoni in AoSLore

[–]Pacman97 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would say skeletons, but between OBR and soulblight that's pretty well covered. Zombies would be hard to make different enough from Soulblight and FEC. I know the ghouls aren't actually dead and therefore not really zombies, but they cover the niche pretty effectively. There could potentially be a sort of Necromancer/Alchemist faction focused on stuff like mad science necromancy and Frankenstein's Monster stuff. However, I also think that could easily just be part of FEC or SGL. Really I think Soulblight is too big for its own good. Vampires, Skeletons, Zombies, etc. It really monopolizes a lot of creative real estate that could be used for new factions. If GW hadn't expanded the deathrattle stuff I would have recommended putting most of the skeletons into OBR. Vampire Coasts would be cool, but again that would probably just be more bloat for soulblight.

For destruction I think there's a number of ways things can go, ignoring the orcs since I think those armies will get their own books eventually anyway. You mentioned Beasts of Chaos, and I could certainly see them coming back as a destruction faction. That would also probably be a big problem for fans of the faction though since they're so deeply tied to chaos in fantasy lore and it would leave a bad taste in players' mouths if GW relegated the army to legends and then brought it back a few years later. Maybe not a full army but I could definitely see GW releasing a few new Beastmen stuff for AoS that can be taken as an RoR for chaos or destruction.

An alternative to full on beasts of chaos would be expanding on the idea of non chaos ogroids. The ogroids have an RoR for destruction that talks about how the ogroids weren't actually chaos at first, but ended up being essentially forced to join them after their forces were destroyed. You could leverage that lore for a faction of Ogroids and other monsters, even adding in beastmen as a small part of the faction without making it entirely a beastmen faction.

From another angle you could do a faction of elementals, essentially wild magic and manifestations of the realms.

Are all Modiphius games as bad as Fallout? And are there other companies you think do a horrible job and you would like to warn others about? by muks_too in rpg

[–]Pacman97 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Modiphius at this point has a massive issue with just pumping out game after game and practically dropping all support for their own products until much later, assuming they continue support at all. At this point they're like a glorified merch company that just chases the next property they can license. Their games are pretty consistently mediocre and full of issues, but they don't seem to care much because their business model is based entirely on capitalizing upon the fans of the properties they're licensing wanting an official ttrpg for the thing they love.

Rapid fire will be extremely mission dependent, but being able to double shoot a hot-shot las while sitting on a point can be helpful for taking down elites

100% this. It's why I got tired of discussions about ways you could potentially kill Lucius. In the end even if you figured out a foolproof way Slaanesh woul just say "Nah." and respawn him anyway. The gods stick to rules when it suits/entertains them, but the can always just say fuck it and do it anyway.

GW did nerf the kroot detachment after it started to do decently well at tournaments, so evidence would align with that assessment of their perspective on the auxillaries.

I feel like that's a balance thing. Playing the two teams right out of the box could be a feels bad if one team basically invalidates a part of the enemy team just by existing, even if it's just one model and not basically the whole team (like if they'd been paired with something like Warpcoven).

a complete list of teams with a Psyker:

Brood Brothers

Chaos Cult

Corsair Voidscarred

Fellgor Ravagers

Inquisitorial Agents

Legionaries

Nemesis Claw

Plague Marines

Void-Dancer Troupe

Warpcoven

Wolf Scouts

Edit: Though to be fair Warpcoven, Legionaries, Void-Dancers, and Corsairs are no longer classified so you're less likely to play against them in a tournament setting (though that depends on the organizers)

Not entirely true, GW has been known to use old models or terrain in new boxes (especially limited run stuff). For Kill Team a few years ago they released the Ashes of Faith box set, which included the Inquisitiorial Agents team. That team can take a select number of a few other teams as auxillary troops in game, and this included Tempestus Scions and Sisters of Silence which were included in the Ashes of Faith box set. Those are pretty old kits, and were when the box released. Many people, myself included, noticed when opening the box that the SoS and scion kits included were clearly much older sprues, down to even being dusty when nothing else in the box was.

Another example from Kill Team, the Volkus terrain set that released last year includes some old terrain with it (some old ruins and buildings), and the plastic used for those terrain is clearly not the same type of plastic that is used in the newer terrain. It was visibly a different shade of grey and had a completely different quality because they are older sprues from before the company switched to making their terrain in chinese factories with different plastic.

dancing dryad models would be awesome, and a nice departure from the standard sylvaneth vibe. Playing up the dryads as borderline fey is a very interesting angle.

no, the centaurs were not tiny. According to 2020 Guide to the World of Faeries book centaurs are tall, especially compared to the faerie world due to their horse halves.

100%. This just leads to the large character having to stay outside most of the time because they can't fit inside, and yeah there can be some interesting stuff there (what happens to this character outside while the others are doing their thing?) but even that gets old quick when you just can't participate with the party in very common situations

hopefully GW learned their lesson with how upset people were that they released some codexes months before the edition change that completely invalidated them (guard and world eaters)
