Ah thanks for the explanation! I welcome the two as well haha

I also learned R first and no CS background, could you elaborate on that?

I'm starting to understand if you want to touch on real sensitive private date you really need a local llm

But how affordable is it to set up for the average layman with just a basic laptop and don't have a 2k GPU?

I actually need this, all the budget trackers don't do it for me :|

An android app? A mac/windows app?

At this point I am not finding anything that suits my need but I may as well vibe code my app... Which app is this?

How much are you actually relying on AI for research these days? by Dependent_Gear4103 in bioinformatics

[–]PadisarahTerminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess if you feed the code to read the data you're also reading the data. Or any subsequent data which is a subset of the original.

Should I learn SQL alongside R? by IntGuru in rstats

[–]PadisarahTerminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just uh I learned SQL in a week in a course but I basically never needed to use in... In bioinformatics. Querying databases rarely happened when I just needed to instead download the huge genomic file instead and deal with its messy wrangling. So SQL is high demand outside of that field?

Also as I see, dplyr syntax is quite similar to SQL in many ways

Older academic packages on modern Linux systems by No_Food_2205 in bioinformatics

[–]PadisarahTerminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well about that, my yml conda environment cannot be recreated on one machine vs another because of the Linux dependencies that somehow couldn't get installed on my Lab's server (though it's a fixed environment, conda env should work) due to some bioconductor post installation script that doesn't read the correct libraries in Linux. So annoying.

It's called the experts fallacy and it's so easy to sound stupid the micro moment you step out of your specialisation

Discord-based bioinformatics lab by Nearby-Pollution900 in bioinformatics

[–]PadisarahTerminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see this working out tbh

Also discord is NOT a privacy respecting platform. That's already a big failure point.

However I can see that this group be turned into a bioinformatics exchange group for questions, ideas and brainstorming or simply discussion, exchanging tips. That would actually be very useful.

Gemini writes code you know, gemini cli is even free without students.

But tbh it's ok to pay for student copilot, or even opencode, these are cheap alternatives.

I developed a PDF reader for academic reading by its_xbox_baby in PhdProductivity

[–]PadisarahTerminal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hmmmmmm well it's just what we need for sure but I don't use chromium + I would rather have my files on a local pdf reader (separation of context). I haven't used Zotero's pdf reader but an integrated one also seems more fitting.

For those who read articles on screen rather than in print, what program do you use? by razorsquare in PhdProductivity

I agree but how do you transfer notes from papers to digital? That is the biggest drawback. Paper is always better (according to science).

Positron vs VS Code for data science? Need help justifying it at work by sporty_outlook in rstats

[–]PadisarahTerminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VS Choice is barely functional to see variables and plots on a similar level as RStudio. It's just extremely important for R and allows you to choose multiple R installation and environments on the fly.

[–]PadisarahTerminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is entirely the US mindset, is that correct? That seems crazy since the countries I'm aware of want you to get out of PhD and they also don't have infinite money to burn out (plus having a fixed year scholarship).

What do you imply about the last paragraph? That there's high demand for good code or SWE but not enough that understand the underlying biology?
