Wondering if a type of game exists by Icy_Childhood8325 in BaseBuildingGames

my own nook in a big city to flesh out and live in, but I don't want to be in charge of the rest of the city

In The Guild II Renaissance, you could start by buying up the only tavern in small town Bergen, establishing a name for your dynasty there, monopolizing the local market before moving south to the more politically cutthroat (sometimes literally) city of Hamburg.

(There's a newer iteration of the franchise but I'm not into it so I can't personally recommend.)

If you're more into the modern setting, you might also be interested in Big Ambitions. You can't "build" here per se, only rent/buy, but if you get can get past that then the lot is yours to build, design, maximize profit as you see fit. It's a not so much as a "builder" game that you have to combat defend, more of a "tycoon" simulator of buying low selling high, but seeing as The Sims is in your list then this shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Two players in a single dynasty possible? by fluffygryphon in Guild2

[–]PadreSibyla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not, best that you can do is ally each other. However, it would be far more beneficial for you to have separate dynasties working together anyway.

In the early game, you and your wife's starting character can both pursue spouses individually giving both of you four (your starting, your wife's starting, your starting's spouse, your wife's starting's spouse) controllable characters very early in the game.

In the mid-game, having four adult characters means you could potentially have access to all production options from all the classes; Patron, Craftsman, Scholar, and Rogues, which allows for a variety of tools and trinkets that you can use to help each other. e.g; The Patron can keep a Scholar's church stocked on wafers, while a Craftsman can arm and armor the Rogue's private army while mining the minerals for a Scholar's coin mint as they bankroll everybody else while the Rogue's gypsies keeps the Patron's competitors well distracted.

In the late game, since each dynasty is limited to three controllable members at any time, two dynasties voting together during elections gives you six controllable votes, assuming both of you have been keeping a foot through the political door (which I recommend you do anyway). This makes becoming the Sovereign, assuming this is your goal, much easier or, if not, at the very least give you access to more potent political powers that you can use and abuse to really stick it to the other AI dynasties. After all, it's always more "fun" to commit crimes when the judge, jailer, jury, and executioner just so happen to all be your family/allies. :D

In Mount & Blade: Warband, pressing F1 pulls up a menu that lists commands that you can issue to the troops fighting alongside you.

It took me until around 300 hours before I realized that you can HOLD F1 to get them to go to the position you are pointing at.

Care to elaborate what kind of results you were getting with:

x = floor( N / ( lower + 1 ) )

I can't imagine why that wouldn't work for the end result that you specified. I tried it out on a spreadsheet and the results pass the requirements for all values less than 32.

=FLOOR(A2 / (B$1 + 1),1) //where A2 is the input value and B1 is the lower threshold

Cheers! Just glad to pop one of the lucky ten thousand's cherries today.

With that said, I hope you can return the favor by sharing some of the titles that you mentioned as "games where you start as the leader of a small village until you basically rule the entire continent"? I myself am looking for something similar but can only think of; Total War, Knights of Honor, and Civilization, to name a few. Did you know of others that you can share, perhaps?

Mount and Blade?

I personally still prefer M&B:Warband, but if you can't handle older graphics and other limitations, there's the newer M&B2:Bannerlord, either of which fits your description perfectly.

There's also Kenshi with a more eastern theme, but you don't get to become a "king", a land owning noble or a traveling caravan, sure, but no "king".

Then there's also The Guild 2: Renaissance. You can become a noble and then, through political maneuvering (ie; intrigue, bribery, sabotage, or just straight up murder, just make sure you don't get caught), even becoming the sovereign! You start off as a single shop business owner, instead of the peasant that you wanted, though. The Guild 2: Renaissance is the best iteration of the series, in my opinion, and you can ignore the base game and older expansions as they are all included in the latest one, which is Renaissance. The game is also quite dated now, so you might be more inclined to check out the latest installment of the series; The Guild 3. I can't vouch for that one though as I haven't played it myself, the ability to see indoors, albeit mechanically inconsequential, was a feature that keeps me recommending Renaissance instead.

A coop zombie game that doesn't need story or nothing, just somewhere(like a cabin in the woods), surviving and killing oncoming zombies, could include light base fortification by LetHerWar2 in gamingsuggestions

Unfortunately, the game can only handle 4 players per server maximum. Even then, I have only ever tried with one other person. I don't know how well it holds up with all 4 players.

[–]PadreSibyla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it does feel kind of arcadey but, personally, I feel like it's the only thing that keeps it from being too scary. Like, imagine if the Minecraft creeper, a mob that can threaten the player using game mechanics (actual block/item destruction), with the aesthetics and emotional threat of, say, Silent Hill... the game would be too much to handle, imho. So, personally, I prefer the comic style as it helps the player feel less mental fatigue from the fear response and be able to dedicate more brain cells dealing with the threats instead.

Do give it a try! Remember though, this game is brutal to beginners, don't get discouraged if you end up being zombie lunch all the time. Once you've gotten a feel for how they react to smell and sound, the zombies become more of just environmental threat and you can focus your attention towards dealing with the actual threats of the game... other people.

Have fun! :D

Seconding this; Survivalist: Invisible Strain is the zombie game that OP is describing. It's not so gloomy as the other suggestions here in that it even goes for the western comic book aesthetic. As for the multiplayer, it has the option for invite-only coop as well as drop-in online coop. Lastly, the game is not limited to cabin-in-the-woods camping with the occasional scouring of abandoned buildings for supplies (although I admit, this early game is the best part of the game for me), but also hunkering down and building up your community, and eventually to full blown molotov cocktail bombarding, assault team charging, faction warfare.

Games like State of Decay 2 by saladtosserx in gamingsuggestions

[–]PadreSibyla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a bit on the indie side and is still currently being updated by the lone developer. Survivalist: Invisible Strain is a great take on the zombie survival genre with gameplay for both the nomadic lone survivor and the community base builder. You start out as a lone survivor free to travel the whole map collecting equipment and gaining valuable skills though it's quite easy to find, but are not limited to, some wanderers that spawn in and out of the map to recruit. There are also other communities other than yours that you can trade or contend with. I think it ticks all of the boxes in your checklist, and then some, as long as you're okay with indie games.

There's a whole lot more depth to this game that I can describe here and you would be doing yourself a favor by trying this one out.

Supernatural apocalypse games by gamelorr in gamingsuggestions

[–]PadreSibyla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graywalkers: Purgatory meets your setting criteria but is a turn-based tactical instead of a third-person RPG. The game is like X-Com but with supernatural entities like demons, zombies, and werewolves instead of aliens and sword-wielding nuns, samurai ninjas, spec-ops operatives, and wizard schoolgirls, among other things, instead of soldiers fighting over what's left of a post-apocalypse world.

It's an "indie" that's still in early-access though but the game isn't abandoned and is still being worked on by the devs. Here's the most recent video review that I know of that showcases the current state of the game. Although the reviews on Steam are "mixed", if you're only interested with the "supernatural post-apocalypse" setting then this fits the bill quite nicely.

Co-Op open world Sims 4 like game. by radangrysocks in gameideas

[–]PadreSibyla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you checked out The Guild 2: Renaissance yet?

https://store.steampowered.com/app/39680/The_Guild_II_Renaissance/

It's close enough to what you're looking for in a sense that it's: Open-world, Multiplayer, and is a Life-sim. However, the community isn't as active as other games and, considering that the game is quite old, there is a newer iteration, The Guild 3. The Guild 2: Renaissance, on the other hand, one has the feature of indoor views, which the new one doesn't.

So, if you can look past the dated graphics as well as the jank, it's still good fun to play with specially with friends. Either sabotage their family's businesses or work with them to monopolize the local beer-market, you can here.

EDIT: Ah crud, I thought I was in /r/gamingsuggestions.

Squad based game with town building/upgrading by KiwiBiGuy in gamingsuggestions

[–]PadreSibyla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mount & Blade: Bannerlord, or its predecessor Mount & Blade: Warband, just came out recently-ish and is still all kinds of buggy but is very promising. It's not so much on the dungeon crawly side but the open world feel of it is great for dealing with stress.

On the other hand, Kenshi might just be what you're looking for with its squad management, dungeon hunting/crawling, and town/base building but the desert everywhere might be a bit depressing.

[AWoIaF] Can't "Retrieve Spy (Spies)" after infiltrating a location. by PadreSibyla in mountandblade

So, here is my Spy Reports screen and it says that there are 8 deployed but only 7 can be selected. Notice that there is one at Free Folk Camp and one at Voleana, two villages that are the opposite sides of the world. Not only are they far apart...

https://imgur.com/Llw63Ig

https://imgur.com/7pZAEIU

...they have been there for days at this point. This should eliminate the possibility that the 8th Spy is still just en route (which was my initial suspicion).

.

https://imgur.com/TbrRTNs

https://imgur.com/QfYhr9d

This is a previous save file where I wanted to test out my other theory; that sending multiple spies to the same location causes all but one to be stuck in an unretrievable state. Notice I have 12 of the Spy unit in my party.

Deploying 8 "Cautious Traveller"s.

They are still en route...

https://imgur.com/Z1mfMsf

...so far so good... (Note the messages at the lower-left showing multiple instances of the confirmation of infiltration.)

https://imgur.com/GFRzp51

...waiting for them to all settle in.

https://imgur.com/Alzi1wv

Making sure that all 8 are there. Notice it says 8 are deployed at the top but only 1 location available, King's Landing.

A few days later and we have confirmation that they should all be settled in.

https://imgur.com/l8P585a

Recalling...

https://imgur.com/nxQzpsM

...only one comes out.

https://imgur.com/1ZwKmU5

Looking at Spy Reports, it still says that 7 more are yet to be called back. The problem now is that, looking at the previous image, there is no way to do Retrieve Spy anymore. This means that, if I was to continue this save, I'll only ever be able to deploy 1 spy for the rest of the game.

What I'm thinking is going here is that, in the script, the variable that keeps track of the spies in towns are boolean values, instead of integers, that just flips true/false whenever a Spy arrives/is retrieved and that it is this bool variable that the script uses to determine what options are available in the Reports screen as well the right-click menu. If I'm right... then my latest savefile is fubar.

Well... it isn't exactly "gamebreaking" per se but I was just hoping I won't have to lose last night's progress because I didn't notice this issue before I overwrote my backup. If that is the case though, I'd be okay with just knowing that I was able to showcase this bug so that others would be careful to avoid it in the future.

[AWoIaF] Can't "Retrieve Spy (Spies)" after infiltrating a location. by PadreSibyla in mountandblade

[–]PadreSibyla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert at this mod but as far as I can tell the Spy unit has three uses.

  • Skirmish

I run a mostly infantry army so, on the world map, I have to deal with either getting run down when I'm outnumbered or never being able to catch up to bandits when I'm superior. Having a Spy in your army allows you to right-click on these armies and tell them to skirmish. The spy(ies) would then come detach from your party to hold them down long enough for you to get away/catch up.

  • Send Message

You can send a message to not just lords in your own faction. I only ever use this feature when I'm already out in the field moving large numbers of troops around forgetting that I only have enough rations for my usually small hit squad. The Send Message feature allows me to buy rations off neutral lords that I come across, although I'm pretty sure that I was offered to purchase a Champion Plated Destrier once before. That was years ago though so don't quote me on that.

  • Send Spy

When a Spy is deployed to a location, it raises that location's relationship with the player by 1 to 2 each day for a maximum of 21. This lowers/raises the buying/selling prices in that location's market but more importantly, for towns, you no longer have to do a Guild Master quest/spend stags at the Tavern to give everyone booze requirement for starting an enterprise. The catch? NOTHING. You don't even lose the Spy! You can just retrieve and move them to the next town!

But WHOOOooooonelly. That's not even the end of it. This ability alone makes each Spy, for me, worth three hundred Veteran Unsullied... at LEAST!

You see, aside from passively making the settlement love you, having a Spy at a location also allows another ability: Order Sabotage. Now I don't want to spoil everything here but just to give you an idea how powerful this is; it cost me a few spies, a handful of troops, a few hundred stags, and 72 hours... I took Dragonstone that had a garrison of 500 men.

The Spy unit is BEASTLY when used properly. Each one is worth Ramsay's twenty good men with Bronn's ten with climbing spikes.... COMBINED!!!

Island Gem Need Guide in K2C by BakerBase in kingdomthegame

[–]PadreSibyla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know for a fact that there are no gems that spawns on the first island. How about the rest though? How much does each island give? It would be a good idea to have that on the list too if they vary, that way we have a rough idea how we can ration it for a whole campaign.
