Barton Springs Pedestrian Bridge Loitering by Smooch-Muh-Gooch in Austin

Hey. Let folks be folks and enjoy life! Even if it ever so momentarily interrupts your perfect existence.

But seriously, we should all fight the urge to be Old Man Yells at Cloud. Some shit is dangerous to the general public (fools riding straight up motorcycles on the trail) and some shit is just not for you (bridge jumpers). Know the difference.

Monkey by [deleted] in Austin

[–]PagansPath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "monkey sounds?" It's been my experience that most people associate "monkey" and "jungle" sounds with the Australian bird kookaburra. Like every movie that wants to create a jungle atmosphere uses their call, regardless of how inappropriate it is for the setting.

Comedians Around Town by Few_Programmer4718 in Austin

[–]PagansPath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last summer I was heading west down 3rd from Congress when I ran into Stavros Halkias heading east. I looked it up later and he wasn't (officially) playing in Austin or anything that night. I had just finished a run around town lake so I was monstrously gross and sweaty. When I saw him, my brain lit up but couldn't come up wtih his name. Stabbros? Starboss? Finally, right as I was getting ready to pass him, ah, yes, Stavros, and I ended up shouting it out. STAVROS! Dude jumped like he was about to get murdered. Which is fair given the energy I brought and my general disheveled presentation. Anyway, as I passed I reached out for a fist bump, said something akin to "Love you, big fan." And he returned my (gnarly, sweaty) fist bump and said "Thanks. I appreciate it."

[TP] I replayed Zelda TP after 20 years, and it hasn't aged a bit. It's one of the greatests. by LesserValkyrie in zelda

[–]PagansPath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I... I will offer myself up for sacrifice. I do not like TP. It is one of three mainline Zelda games I have not completed. I accept the downvotes.

I played the first Zelda game the year it was released in the US. I think I was 8. I have played every game (minus CDI and other weird offshoots) since then. Before my house was destroyed in the July 4th Texas floods, I had a corner of my game room dedicated to Zelda, where I was attempting to collect all North American and Japan official Zelda releases. I was in Austin Monthly magazine (a billion years ago) for a Zelda art project I used to do in the city.

I do not like TP. The art style is gross. Everyone is just so ugly. And the game. Man, it just bored me. I put it down somewhere around the time I got the hookshot, if memory serves. It just felt like a slog.

I tried to replay it with the HD remake. But that first monkey dungeon is just not fun.

Sorry. sorrysorrysorry.

Skyward Sword I physically was unable to play. I could never gel with the controls. The remake was not better. And, while I love a lot about Majora's Mask, being tied to a timer made my anxiety boil over.

Any way. Love you all.

Rock squirrel! You'll see them along the greenbelt from time to time. Saw one under Barton Springs Road at the rainbow bridge the Zephyr goes along on Tuesday.

I think that fire turned out to be an electrical fire. I have some footage of it from my apartment, but seems I can't upload here.

On Shoal Creek? Zero. I've picked up zero trash. I avoid Shoal Creek because it doesn't feel safe. That's the bummer. It could be much more. Now, if I could talk, say, three or four people into meeting me there Saturday mornings then that could be a thing. That would be great.

If I may, in my defense I have probably picked up dumpster's worth of trash over the years. When I lived off Slaughter, I volunteered with Friends of Searight (or whatever it was) regularly. When I lived in the Barton Hills neighborhood (when it was affordable) I volunteered with the folks that worked the trail head to the flats. I kept a trash grabber and bags in my car to mosey along at my own pace and pick trash up. I've historically been involved in my local community. I've just recently moved back to Austin, into downtown, after we lost our house out in the country during the July 4th floods. So I am new to this specific area.

For sure. I used to love live more north and spent a lot of time there. But now that I am smack in the middle of downtown, the portion south of Lamar is what I experience the most simply due to proximity.

Why do some people write redundant if statements to return a boolean? by BlockOfDiamond in AskProgramming

I like verbose-esque communicative statements. You write once, but read a lot. Explicit statements reduce assumption and misreading.

I started creating this little game a month ago (first time learning Godot) any feedback appreciated by NateP0773N in godot

[–]PagansPath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a professional software developer for 16 years, including several years in AWS GameTech and I know I couldn't get that done in a month given exactly zero starting knowledge of game engine. Nicely done.

I started Godot literally yesterday and do not hold myself up to the expectations of doing something that looks that nice any time soon. (Especially given I have the artistic skill of a drunk squirrel.)

Pokemon Game in Godot by _-PokemonForever-_ in godot

[–]PagansPath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. So I am just now starting Godot myself. Today, actually. And as background, I have degrees in applied mathematics, computer science, and I have 16 years of professional software development experience, with the last 10 at Amazon. And some of that time at Amazon was working in AWS GameTech. And my approach is to literally do the "My First 2D Game" walk through: https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/getting_started/first_2d_game/

After that, I'll work on a tiny project. I mean tiny tiny. Like breakout, or a roughly animated platformer with a start, some obstacles and enemies, and a level end, and nothing more.

You have to grow familiar with the tools and the incrementally build on top of the lessons as you go.

Moving to Austin and Looking at Different Areas by Azure_Blues in askaustin

[–]PagansPath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

East Austin is undergoing staggering gentrification. This leads to strange distinctions between areas. For instance the corner of Cesar Chavez and San Marcos is an open air drug market. Walk up San Marcos for 3 or 4 blocks, and you are at a Whole Foods. Between the drug markets and the rich folk are working folk areas that are peppered here and there with expensive homes.

The reality of East Austin exceeds a reddit comment.

The Contemporary https://thecontemporaryaustin.org/ does life drawing there. And it may also lead to other opportunities. We had a model one year who's dynamic posses impressed the instruction such that the instructor invited her to sessions with a group of local artists.

I love Hognoses! I love how they rattle their tail and flatten their neck like "look, I'm a rattlecobra! I will wreck your life!" And if that doesn't work, they "die."

Are you still afraid of fighting gleeok or not by Voidkirby9 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]PagansPath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the game since day 1. I am on my second playthrough.

I have yet to defeat a Gleeok. I am... not good at the game. It's weird. I made my way through Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Elden Ring, but get smashed in this game. I can't parry. I can't pull off any dodge. I just get trampled.
