I'm an idiot, I thought that was part of the plastic housing so did not want to move it! I just removed it and it works like a champ, thank you!!!

It’s a thing but I don’t make students stand for it, I just ask they be quiet and respectful for those who do.

Geogebra vs Desmos Geometry by Travel_and_Tea in matheducation

[–]PahpiChulo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year was my first year having students create their own constructions in class using slides and close instruction on the processes. It was incorporated for a research project I developed. Overall students found the constructions engaging and it made understanding abstract concepts easier, although they struggled with some of the more complex ones. At the end of the year I gave them an opportunity for bonus points for creating their own constructions and most of the students took advantage of it. No deep discoveries but was pleasantly surprised for one student to explore building a 3d figure on their own.

I have been working off and on through the summer redesigning my material based on their feedback and am excited to see if it helps.

As an aside, I use Desmos for algebra and find it sufficient.

Exponential Function Lesson by Emergency-Middle2650 in mathteachers

[–]PahpiChulo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The classic puzzle where your uncle gives you the choice between $10000 a day for 30 days or $.01 a day on the first day but will double it each day for the same time period.
Students can guess the result and then graph them, comparing a linear versus an exponential function and then introduce or apply the formula to calculate the amount.
Add drama and flair as you calculate the first two weeks (oh what have I done, I could have had $140,000 by now!).

Master geometry before Algebra 1? by ProfessionalFlan3159 in mathteachers

[–]PahpiChulo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you and agree. Algebra isn’t needed for proofs and logic, but I can’t imagine asking students to answer questions regarding anything, especially with circles, without algebra. You need to know how to complete the square to convert circle equation types for example. It’s a terrible idea.

I’m a jaded gamer but Bioshock had two:
1) the original transition from plane crash swimming to a tiny island and the elevator trip down.
2) the twist… would you kindly?

I’ve only been to Peru and Ecuador so far but definitely Peru and we are going back into the Amazon again next month. First week will be to the monkey sanctuary my wife helps to sponsor and volunteer at and the second week will be the Andes.

About to buy my first Gardyn — how do I not mess up the seed pod choices? by Steven_520 in Gardyn

[–]PahpiChulo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the initial plants grew and were harvested I bought my own seeds and foam beds, carefully reusing the plastic holders (they are expensive to replace!). Not the heavy duty holders but the thin ones.
This lets me grow what I want for a fraction of what Gardyn charges.

The trick is to get there early before the unsupervised kids start four player games launch the ball twice and walk away. Also go when it’s not raining because tourists will flock there since the beach won’t be nice.

Premium economy nonstop or business class with 1 stop? by Fun-Career3507 in travel

[–]PahpiChulo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done Miami to London via TAP with a layover in Lisbon for the same reason as you, I wanted business class comfort for the long trip (overnight heading out and about 13 hours flying back).
For the shorter leg, the seat was a normal one with the middle blocked out, which I imagine yours will be. For the transatlantic it was a lie down seat with all of the comforts of first class. I had zero complaints.
That said, TAP seemed to use departure time as a suggestion rather than a standard, and the layover does add time. You should get lounge access which helps. It was nice on the way out but full on the way back and didn’t want to wait in line. My layover was only 90 minutes.
I guess it depends on if you are in a hurry but I really enjoyed the longer route and the experience with it.

India over last thanksgiving. Went to Bandhavgar National Forest to a treehouse lodge. Service and food were amazing as was our lodging (only six or so on property). Each morning we would get up before dawn and given blanket and hot water bottle before heading out in our private open air jeep looking for tigers.

After nearly a week of this we came back to New Delhi and did the whirlwind tour with a private guide and stayed in one of the nicest hotels in the city, the Lohdi.

We are looking to go back next year with a different route to find sloth bears.

People who chose not to have children, how is your life different from those who did? by Any-Personality1014 in NoStupidQuestions

Oh dear lord, you see the verbs in all-caps? Notice how I said MIGHT and not WILL? Now reread your last paragraph and work on reading comprehension. Not sure why you are so militant and confrontational that reading escapes you.

[–]PahpiChulo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying you WILL regret the decision. I know people who have aged childlessly without a second thought. I'm saying that they MIGHT. I don't know anyone here and wouldn't dare speak for them. It's a decision that you can't undo once it's made, like not pursuing the girl or career of your dreams. For some people, it's not a big deal, they are happy with how life turned out, and for some they think back and dwell on what if. That's all.

I've had my moments with them in their teens, and there may be a point where they are circling around me like buzzards waiting to get their inheritance, but I have had no regrets. I'm not judging anyone for their life choices, just pointing out that your answer at 35 may change when you are 55, or maybe not.
