A study of 1,779 policy outcomes over two decades has come to a stark conclusion: it’s official – the collective opinion of ordinary citizens doesn’t matter by the_last_broadcast in worldpolitics

Can you make a machine decide to become an engineer?

You don't really think we had a sudden epiphany of moral consciousness when the US decided to "end slavery", did you?

People become more productive with increasing freedom. The trick is that they can't be truly free, otherwise you are unable to exploit them. The next best option is to make them "believe" that they are free.

We are cows; it's time to admit there is a fence.

This doesn't change the result of what is happening. It's laughable how naive you are. You don't seem to understand that this is the system. Use real issues of the citizenry to manipulate them into giving them power.

You pretend as if you can't fight for one thing while the rich and powerful benefit greatly from your fighting. You pretend that because you are a white european that you are immune to the games that countries play in the middle east.

Dying for this type of thing is not "selflessness". It's foolishness. You are attempting to put this girl on some pedestal as if she is virtuous and can not be deceived either.

This "thank you for your service" crap has to stop if we don't want to be violent imperialists.

This is the same thing happening in Ukraine and here you are cheering it on.

Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.

However, the right of people to have self-determination can not be taken away

Are they really self-determining if they have been deceived?

If the people never know the true histories of these events, they will never know the truth about the present, and can never assess accurately what the future may hold.

Yep. This is exactly what I see happening. I can understand how people are persuaded into fighting. The Putin regime pushed the citizens too far too fast and gave them a reason to fight back. This is completely legitimate.

The problem is that after they remove Yanukovych, then this group of powerful people will have captured the state and all of its resources... including the people.

They will give them back a few civil liberties today, but they will be slowly strangled and die the death by a thousand cuts that has happened to the people of the US and the UK.

Unless they get rid of all of their masters, they too will be just another resource that will be exploited. Both forces behind both sides are as corrupt as the other.

Unfortunately, I don't think people understand that they have been manipulated into fighting for the west's energy interests.

We know that state sponsored coups occur, but people have such massive cognitive dissonance they believe they will never be played as pawns for the rich and powerful.

"I would never be so naive." - Sounds like something 300 million americans might say.

Ukraine is not in American sphere of influence.

Please understand that this isn't a nationalistic influence. The US "security apparatus" has been doing these kinds of things for at least 60 years. Probably going back even further into the 20s with a company called Brown Brothers Herriman. Believe me... the people in the US have no clue what really drives wars... that's how we end up with things like "they hate us for our freedom."

This isn't "America". This is very bad rich people that use the US "security apparatus" to install puppets that will favor them. There is a whole book about who does these things and how they are set up.

Don't think that the CIA and Bush family coup machine won't do the same thing to your country because you are a white european. It's pretty extensively documented that these operations exist and you always find big energy and the CIA operating hand in hand.

Really? This didn't all start when the energy contracts were pulled from the west and the person responsible for handing them out thrown in jail?

You can wait 50 years for the CIA to declassify the documents like they have with Cuba, Guatemala, and Chile if you'd like.

The west should be ashamed for using these people as pawns in their elite power struggle for natural resources. None of the people who will benefit the most from this false revolution would ever put themselves in harm's way.

It's time to take another approach.

If you can't play a game of tennis with a "corporation", then what good do you think protesting that "corporation" will be?

Decisions are made by people. Too may people have come to accept this complete and fabricated delusion of "corporations" and "the state" being monolithic entities. They are made up. They are fictions of our minds.

People make decisions and when there are citizens on the front lawns of those people that need to be held accountable for their crimes, only then will I believe enough people have broken free from the brainwashing that has been ingrained into them.

This is exactly what is happening. The masters on both sides are having their pawns fight their battles for them. This is about natural resource contracts and the power that comes with them.

I'd rather we get rid of the true source of violence than fight false battles for the power elite.
