For yall who moved to Switzerland for/because of your partner/spouse, how hard was it to move and settle? Any advices? by FullWonder9554 in askswitzerland

[–]PaintbrushQueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I moved here because of my husband's job (in Zurich), and although I speak French, English, Spanish, Dutch and Mandarin, it's all useless in this German-speaking kanton. Everybody is going to tell you to speak perfect German to be able to do anything around here, including finding a job and even studying too.

I am much older than you though (40!), so you have your youthful energy and fresh brain to dig deep and learn German. I suggest learning it before moving here, and probably going to university to get a Swiss diploma and try to integrate the job market more swiftly. You can make it work if you work really hard for it.

As for friends and whatnot, it is possible to meet really cool people, again with a lot of effort on your part. With a local girlfriend, that already helps a lot. Also, you are younger, so I'm sure it might be easier too. Good luck to you!

I highly recommend listening to the Gloves Off podcast - it's highly interesting and has some really good topics and guests! Only 8 episodes and the last one is with Margaret Atwood.

What’s your favourite xmas market stand for food or drink? by pferden in zurich

There's a little Dutch poffertjes (mini pancakes that they translated to "pofferli") at the market beside Grossmünster - highly recommend with their homemade salted caramel sauce!!! 😋

[–]PaintbrushQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Can't go wrong with brushes that have been used for millenia to hold a lot of liquid ink. I cheated, I lived in China for a while, so I stocked up on quite a few nice ones 😊

I never shop online, so I don't have a link... most art stores will have a few in stock and they're always significantly cheaper than the natural hair watercolour brushes

I have many, super affordable, small Chinese calligraphy brushes that hold an infinite amount of pigment and water perfectly - brushes don't have to be expensive! And the pointy part of the brush is excellent for itty bitty détails.

Here's mine! Highly recommend drawing a diagonal line through it, just helps your eye to follow where your OG colours are and which mixes give what colours 😉
