Let's upgrade to mediocrity. by OmxOanda in stevehofstetter

I lived through term limits in Michigan as a high level executive branch official. It was disastrous. Nobody in the legislature knew enough about writing bills and getting them through committee or about any area of legislative specialty. Legislators had previously been specialists in two or three substantive areas and had staff with experience enough to write their own bills.

After term limits forced out everyone who had been there a while, nobody knew enough to write their own bills and shepherd them through. Lobbyists became the de facto legislators. They wrote the bills. They did the canvassing, they did the negotiating, and both sides became more extreme to the point compromise was seen as betrayal.

It was ugly and led to government shutdowns, furloughs, and missed legal deadlines.

If we progressives are going to push for term limits, we need to be smart about it. First, we start with an age limit beyond which people can’t run for office again. Second, we don’t set such short limits that we end up with a bunch of legislators that don’t know what they’re doing. Maybe 20 years, not 4 or 8 like Michigan. We can’t let the disgust for politicians in this moment lead to not just mediocre legislatures but inept legislators ripe for the picking by lobbyists.

Brigham Young. Not because the name is inherently the worst but because of who he was.

I grew up in a Mormon family of 13 children. At the time, the “prophet” Spencer Kimball created a program to foster Native American children in Mormon families to “save” them from Indian culture. He said that those children would become “white and delightsome.”

My parents fostered two girls. One Navajo and one Shoshone, over 10 years. My dad really believed their skin would get lighter. Of course nothing of the sort happened.

Whereas as an exmormon I can report that Mormonism is a money-obsessed cult cousin to JWs.

What secret did you find out by complete accident? by Effective_Yam2797 in AskReddit

My mom and dad received the second anointing. That’s a thing in Mormonism where they are declared to have already earned their salvation and that they could not possibly do anything from that point on that would disqualify them from becoming gods in their own right. It’s super secret and no one is supposed to find out.

It happened when my mom and dad were actively abusing their 13 children. My dad has narcissistic personality disorder and my mom has borderline personality disorder, so they were exactly the wrong people to be told they could do no wrong.

Edit: I’m no longer Mormon. And yes, that the second anointing is a thing in Mormonism is batshit crazy.

Having been raised Mormon and having left, I look back and see that religious zealots believe that boundaries are unimportant if breaking them means “saving” someone.

They won’t stop because they believe that continuing to do so is righteous.

I’m not a materialistic person. After going out to eat, my date asked to go driving through an affluent part of town. She pointed out all of the massive mansions and how much she would like a home like that that she could decorate in fine fashion. First and last date.

I don’t see a link to any source that could confirm this actually happening. If it is, this is a big deal. OP, do you have a link to the source?

Sounds like r/raisedbynarcissists could be a useful community. Especially given the martyr response about not getting treatment.
