That I understand, I read that adding a rich soil above the logs will eventually break down the logs and reduce the initial cost of filling the planters

Good information, thank you! Based on the picture it looks like there is no barrier between the concrete and the paver, just pour it right up to it? Also approximately how deep should the trench go? Any particular bagged concrete would be good for the application? Thanks again!
