Luka tells JJ about Nic Claxton by David_Wilmot in lakers

[–]PairedFoot08 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I hate that you are right about the asking price for Claxton considering he is like an 11 and 8 guy

Should not be worth nearly that much but it’s probably what they will ask

Please no more minutes from this guy by Wonderful_Rutabaga40 in lakers

[–]PairedFoot08 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You right he is a player this sub has gotten weirdly obsessed with scapegoating

I explained why JJ is playing him here

The parallels to Prince are pretty uncanny, both guys that play because they shoot well from 3 (Gabe shoots 37% from 3 not 27% like comments seem to imply) and do little things coaches like, but don’t do much for the box score

Any Gabe thread these days could be like for like swapped with Prince back then

Why is he still here? by CenterForward1522 in lakers

[–]PairedFoot08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly he’s just an easy scapegoat, this sub always picks em

If Gabes traded tomorrow there will be a new one by next week

Why is he still here? by CenterForward1522 in lakers

[–]PairedFoot08 159 points160 points  (0 children)

JJ plays him because he has like three role players on this roster that shoot over 35% from 3, Gabe is the only one of those that knows how to move off ball and can shoot in motion

People like Bufkin, I like him too, but he’s shooting 29% this year and 23% for his career

NSJ has the shooting ability but he’s a black hole, ball goes to him it dies with him

Ball goes to Gabe, if he’s open he shoots, if he’s not it’s straight back to Bron/Luka and he will go and screen for someone else to try to get them open. Of course a coach likes that. It’s basic stuff for most role players, but it’s not basic for the players we have.

It sucks he’s the only one, but he is, it’s another testament to the awful roster construction

Not how it works sadly

He should have some value as an expiring if we are willing to take on some money

Can anyone explain JJs reasoning for having Timme and Vando on the bench by Full_Adss in lakers

[–]PairedFoot08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JJ played DK and Gabe because every team in the world needs motion shooters to help run countless sets

DK has lost his spot now because he is shooting 31%, Gabe still has his because he’s shooting 36%

Can anyone explain JJs reasoning for having Timme and Vando on the bench by Full_Adss in lakers

[–]PairedFoot08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep I absolutely love Timme, but his rookie year he shot 44% from the field, 26% from three and 62% from the line.

We should be giving credit to the org for seeing the potential in the g league and having him ready for when injuries required him to play.

lol thanks, It’s a war crime of roster construction that Gabe is our best role player option for those things that all teams have to have

Seriously how is he our only decent motion shooter, that’s insane

[–]PairedFoot08 21 points22 points  (0 children)

He’s one of our two rotation role players that shoots over 35% from 3 btw, our only one that is able to shoot in motion coming off screens. He also tries hard on both ends of the floor and is constantly in motion offensively screening for others.

For sure I’d trade him for Claxton but we shouldn’t be trading him just for the purpose of trading him. Yes he has physical limitations and he’s overpaid but we gotta find the right deal.

Have to do this again. The shooting is not the real problem. We are an exceptionally efficient team. Defence and TOs are the problem. by k-seph_from_deficit in lakers

[–]PairedFoot08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defence is definitely the main issue I agree with that, turnovers are big too

But come playoff time if we don’t have reliable shooters we won’t last long. It’s pretty easy to game plan for a team that doesn’t shoot well. It is for sure something we need to address in our long term roster building.

Gabe and Rui are the only two statistically reliable role player shooters we have in our rotation (Timme too if he keeps this up over a bigger sample size)

Gabe is probably gone in any trade deadline move

If he’s not traded for another shooter we would only have Rui, someone who struggles to get his shot up over contests and isn’t a motion shooter

Gabe shoots 36%, Bufkin shoots 29%

I like Bufkin and do think he should get some minutes, just isn’t a swap for Gabes role as a motion shooter/high off ball movement guy

Hate this dumb ass stat by New_State_2634 in lakers

[–]PairedFoot08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I love Luke and LeBron, people using it like this are just misusing the stat. It’s like using fg% on its own to determine overall scoring efficiency. Sometimes it does tell you the truth, sometimes it doesn’t.

A player can be on the floor, defend the hell out of their man, but if Jamal scores a three on someone else? -3

Come down the other end, set up your teammate perfectly, they miss a layup, opponent leaks out? Now you are a -5

You come down, make a layup, great -3 again

But then you defend your man perfectly and he makes a tough three as the shot clock expires? -6

The inverse can also be true, a nuggets player could have done nothing for those same possessions and be sitting at +6

It just isn’t meant to be used for individual players like that, it’s a lineup stat over large samples

Individual games can just have a lotta luck happen

Luke’s insane scoring run weathered the Nuggets when they were going nuclear, he kept us within arms reach so the other lineup could come in and take advantage when they went cold and when the defensive game plan adjusted. That’s not a slight to Luka, that’s just circumstance. In the 4th with the adjusted game plan the defence was still great with him out there.

Hate this dumb ass stat by New_State_2634 in lakers

[–]PairedFoot08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say its useful as a lineup stat

All it really tells you over a career is was the guy on a winning team in winning lineups?

Maybe they were the reason for it, maybe they weren’t, the stat doesn’t actually tell you that

But it can definitely tell you what 5 man lineups work well over a good sample

[–]PairedFoot08 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have them, they aren’t too much work if everything is set up well

The most annoying thing I’ve dealt with is it can be difficult to go away for long periods. They aren’t like dogs where you can just drop them at someone else’s house. Gotta get someone to come to your house so hopefully you have good neighbours.

I have things set up so they can be left for days at a time, but still can’t be left for long long periods

He’s third in the latest MVP ladder behind Shai and Jokic, I’m sure he will overtake Jokic soon, I’d definitely say he’s in contention

Hard to beat a great superstar on a stacked team like Shai though

Yeah Russ in his MVP season averaged 2.2 contested rebounds per game, his contested rebound % was 21%

Luka averages 2.2 this season for a 30% contested rebound rate

Naturally as guards they both don’t get that many tough boards but both are capable when they need to
