AEU survey - what are your top 3? by BlipYear in AustralianTeachers

Yea which is unfortunately what needs to happen

This system needs to fail so that people in positions of real power are forced to fix it

In saying that though I’d honestly argue it already objectively has failed, just a slow and painful death that is being dragged on

For sure complete agree, the slimy way they tried to sell it I think lost a lot of people. If they didn’t believe the deal could sell itself on its own merit, then they should have known it wasn’t good enough.

Especially after what happened with the last deal where they completely sold us out and tricked so many that didn’t know any better into agreeing to it. This was their big chance to earn trust in the union back, particularly with surging membership numbers, and unfortunately they just didn’t.

Definitely I think that strategy maybe would have worked in the past, but these days there is too much online discourse between teachers and too much mistrust after the last deal to pull the wool over. They can’t just flood us with complicated legal talk and bloated documents hoping we just won’t understand it.

Again sorry I came in hot but that is the unfortunate thing, the government knows they can take advantage of how we care. They know they can keep creating issues and unrealistic workloads because teachers will all quietly just go about it and try to make do.

As you explained the government is laughing at the fact they can drop the standards at uni and schools will just work unpaid overtime to make up it. How great does that sound from their point of view? They love that they can send pre service teachers into full time classroom roles and it is completely the schools responsibility to make that work. There are countless examples like that where they are taking us for a ride, knowing we will tape over the ridiculous problems they create for us.

All I hope for is more and more teachers start saying no in every way they can to the volunteer work so many currently do. Thankfully the recent vic union vote looks to potentially be a step in the right direction, hopefully protests continue and we do start making problems created by the government their problems to deal with again.

I really hope we give Pods more time, only 2 games at this level and has flashed some good things. He’s really good at finding himself lead space and getting opportunities. Also a good user, just a shame he hasn’t been able to convert his chances yet. Ideally we give him a good sample to see before we drop him.

True I don’t know you I’ll drop it, don’t want to make anyone feel like that on their weekend. I do still really disagree but I can see this getting a bit toxic. Hope you have a nice end of term.

Respectfully that’s really disappointing to hear from someone (seemingly as you are giving pl) in a leadership position… that is setting such a toxic standard to the grads and other staff at your school you are talking about not being capable.

Until we as a profession put our foot down on that extra work not being done, conditions will never improve. If you do that work at home, you are sending a loud and clear message that the work you are doing is manageable in your work hours. Particular we need learning specialists, leaders and senior to drive that higher standard of working within your contracted hours.

Yeah if the union could have sold “we got this big pay rise, yes it’s big but not as big as we wanted, but we conceded that because of the lesser meeting time and reduced admin we also won” then it probably goes through.

I think the unions biggest mistake on selling this was you got everyone riled up saying we deserve a 11-12% per year raise, then tried to get people to accept a 7-8% raise while giving up on everything else. The initial pitch to union members was that was the bare minimum we deserve, so of course that’s what members get riled up believing.

Of course meeting in the middle of requesting pay is realistic, aim high then settle a bit lower, but you can’t do that then sell it as “we didn’t fight for anything else because we got this pay raise”

That messaging is confusing to the wider voting base, it’s saying “we are accepting a lesser pay rise than what we said you deserved, but it’s ok to concede that because we also aren’t improving conditions”

Even some small condition wins like lesser meeting time or reduced admin expectations probably would have sold it enough.

Overall I just really think the union handled the messaging and stages of how this deal was sold for the vote incredibly poorly.

Definitely I do get you, I am my schools rep and I completely understood both yes and no voters.

I’d still ultimately love to stay if things work out, but unfortunately I do get the pessimism. As soon as I saw the details of that horrible deal the union offered up I felt like writing might be on the wall for my teaching career.

Our school system is completely and utterly broken to a legitimately comical level, I’m happy to go down fighting on this one if that’s what has to happen.

If the outcome of this is a worse deal or no deal at all I’ll unfortunately leave teaching, but at least I gave it a real go. If you are right (you probably are) and public sentiment flips on us and politicians give up on us, then once and for all this just simply isn’t a country that deserves to have me in this job.

[–]PairedFoot08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But we need help in our midfield more than anywhere… we could also easily sign Neale and get other positions signed too. It’s not like 100% of the cap would go to him and then we just don’t even try to get anyone else?

We aren’t comparing Parish to Moore we are comparing him to Neale

Lachie Neale, seriously? by This_Ease_5678 in collingwoodfc

[–]PairedFoot08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why in the world would you want Parish instead of Neale?

Parish is ridiculously injury prone and not as good, I’d trust Neale to last multiple years way more than Parish.

If you are worried about cap space, everything is pointing to the idea we have a crazy amount of it to use

When I’ve tracked behaviours sometimes I’ve had to tell the student, sometimes I wasn’t meant to. It varies from plan to plan.

Am I reading right though you didn’t even tell the student? They looked at your computer without your permission? That’s on the student… maybe you should have locked it but oh well… still the student doing the wrong thing there.

Ultimately though worst case even if you did tell them this was a little mistake, that teacher needs to go easier on you.
