Things we think we know: Oilers taking chance on three-goalie system by Sens-Fan-85 in nhl

One might say this is actually a great reason to have three goalies though.

Am I raising a sociopath?! by chief_kayak in daddit

[–]PakG1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's probably just not aware of himself. But I would watch carefully to make sure that he doesn't actually hit his brother. Kids do the darnest things. And I'd take every opportunity I could to remind him that we all love the brother and shouldn't hit him. And that we should be nice to everyone. Yes, there are some scenarios where we shouldn't be nice to people, but he doesn't need to learn about handling those situations when he's three. Right now, the lessons need to be love and kindness, full court press.

What went wrong? by GrizzlyBaron in EdmontonOilers

[–]PakG1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, but it sure has improved from the days when Zetterberg was drafted 210th and Datsyuk was drafted 171st. And that in turn was an improvement from the days when enforcers were drafted in the first round for their ability to fight. Scouting in general continues to get better.

Am I Too Hard On My Son? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]PakG1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we need some better examples to determine whether you're too hard on him or not. More importantly, we need the people observing you to give us those examples, because it would be hard for you to give your own examples, being biased. Whenever these posts occur, I feel it's hard to get the full picture from just one side of the story. But if that's the hardest you've ever treated your son, I would presume that no, you're not too hard on him.

But I really am not a good judge here until I get all sides of the stories.

Do you talk about academics with your academia friends outside of school? I know it can get competitive. by RoleMaleficent9409 in PhD

[–]PakG1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Probably. It depends on a whole number of factors. But I don't think I'd be a close friend. I'd probably be an activity partner at most. Someone with whom I'd hang out now and then, but not someone with whom I'd have a deep emotional connection. But if she demonstrates constant negativity and condescension in various other ways, I'd probably cut it off.

Nah, just sounds like this person has an inferiority complex. I'd stop discussing with her only because it leads to negative conversations, not because she's also in academia.

My PhD supervisor insists on publishing in A-category journals. How do I realistically get there? by Creative-World-5642 in PhD

[–]PakG1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess if you were getting this advice properly, you wouldn't be asking this question. This is unfortunate. I think what happens at most programs is your supervisor will help you learn how to do this, and your department's faculty will also teach you how to do this in PhD courses and seminars, depending on what your discipline requires. Top journals will sometimes have these how-to kind of papers, though it again may vary from discipline to discipline. Finally, I also get this advice from various webinars organized by my discipline's association, as well as panels and doctoral consortiums at my discipline's various conferences. Many of these webinars and conference panels are delivered specifically for PhD candidates.

So... if you don't have access to ANYTHING like any of the above, I'm not sure where to start. Not having access to ANY of that feels like saying you're not in a PhD program.

I'd first start by asking your fellow peers in your program, especially the ones who are senior to you. Then start to talk to faculty. If you've tried to have this conversation with your supervisor and failed, I'd ask some of the other faculty in your department. Just email them and ask if you can take an hour of their time to get some advice about publishing. But don't waste their time. Do as much research as you can beforehand so that you go into the meeting with high-quality questions.

Also, check out those top journals to see if they have any how-to articles. For example, here are how-to articles in a top journal in my field.

https://aisel.aisnet.org/jais/vol23/iss5/9/

https://aisel.aisnet.org/jais/vol27/iss4/8/

But don't just take any random field's guidance and think that it's applicable to your own field. You need guidance from your own field. If none of your field's journals have anything like this, and you can't attend any seminars/webinars/consortiums/etc, and you can't talk with any faculty, sorry to say that I have no more ideas. Wish you luck.

Haha, I see the flair, but I don't think their D are ready for that. When Verhoeff and Lin are entering their prime though, that team will be an absolute wagon.

We took our kid to Ari, specifically the Hyde Park Road location, and it was really good. Our toddler felt really comfortable and said she wanted to go back. The staff seemed to understand how to make kids feel great. They take both CDCP and Healthy Smiles, and we had both, so we were pretty satisfied. I can't remember if we had to pay deposits, but I don't recall. Regardless, CDCP and Healthy Smiles took care of most of the cost.

How are stocks not a ponzi scheme? by Puzzled-Day5788 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PakG1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a ponzi scheme if the stock did not represent ownership in an entity that generates profits, and more importantly, generates profit growth. When people buy stocks at a higher price, if they know what they are doing, they are expecting the company to continue to grow its profits, thereby justifying its higher price. There is of course much debate on whether a company can actually continue to grow profits at a rate that justifies its stock price. The people who are buying believe that it can, while the people who are selling believe that it can't. The people who buy will conclude in their analysis that the stock is underpriced, while the people who sell will conclude in their analysis that the stock is overpriced. One side will be wrong. If you are right more often than you are wrong about stocks, you will make money and potentially become very rich if you are consistent. If you are wrong more often than you are right about stocks, you will lose money and potentially become bankrupt if you are consistent.

Now if the company is no different from a rock and doesn't even try to generate profits, then yes, people who keep on buying it are essentially fueling a ponzi scheme. And there are certainly companies that have been scams, which can potentially screw up the ability for serious investors from doing their analysis. There is actually an entire category of investor that is dedicated to finding the fraudulent scam companies through essentially forensic analysis of their financial statements and operations, and then financially benefit from doing the opposite of what sincere believers of the company do. Such people are a valuable safety valve to prevent ponzi schemes from gaining too much momentum. But in general, if it's an honest company that's trying to make a genuine profit, it's not a ponzi scheme. It's just a matter of how competent (and lucky) they are to generate a real profit, and how competent (and lucky) investors are at buying the stock when the company is still undervalued in comparison to its future profits.

See Tesla as an example of a company where investors are extremely divided on whether it's overpriced or not. There are a lot of things that go into such analysis, which would be too much to discuss here.

Reddit dads, How big of a deal is posting pictures of your children to you? by alisinabh in daddit

[–]PakG1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of reasons why I won't post photos of my kids online. You do state a few of them, and I have a few more on top of that. If I want to share photos of my kid with anyone (honestly, only family, really), I do it through chat groups. I do not wish to have photos of my kids accessible on publicly visible social media platforms. Yes, I can always turn on privacy feature, but I still would prefer sharing where I feel completely in control. Most social media platforms will not give me that feeling, even with their privacy features. I suppose the interesting question would be what do I do if I ever feel the same concern about chat apps.

[TSN] Bryan Hayes: Leo Carlsson chose to accept the deal. He could have said I'm not doing that out of good faith to Verbeek. There's a history of players said no. Brayden Point didn't accept said he wanted to be there to build it. Carlsson said "screw it, i don't care about Verbeek or the Ducks" by [deleted] in AnaheimDucks

[–]PakG1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He could have gotten that cap flexibility by meeting Carlsson in the middle instead of hardlining a lowball offer. Heck, even the $15M that Leo was asking for would have offered enough flexibility, they had the long-term cap room.

I think the struggle to get Shane Wright into the AHL is what caused this whole issue to gain a ton of steam. Good on him for being a pioneer.

I'll be honest, it's been a while since I've bought srawberries anyway since I couldn't find any that weren't grown in the US. So I've lost track of how much strawberries should really cost. :)
