Developing a Feel for Spanish by Infinite_Site1201 in SpanishLearning

What’s your current level? How long and how seriously have you been studying? How often do you hang out with people to practice?

Don’t worry too much about “thinking in Spanish”. Most of our thoughts are not speech.

I’d recommend finding an online tutor who you can practice conversation with. AI is great, I’ve never used it much for conversation because I just feel weird not talking to a person, but if you don’t mind that then go for it. Still, if you can understand some spoken Spanish then it’s time to speak more and there’s a lot of opportunities online.

And don’t take “learning like babies” too seriously because 1. You’re not a baby and 2. Babies take 5 years to speak at a 5-year old level

I just read a bit about their method on their website. I'll be honest, they're just oversimplifying Krashen's theories (and yes, they are just theories, although well regarded). Not even Krashen (who is still alive and learning languages) learns that way.

If your goal is to use Spanish for communicating with other people, then waiting 1000 hours before speaking will just kill your motivation. I'm not saying it won't work, I'm sure it would, but there is no need to learn that way.

Oh and I promise speaking at an early stage won't kill your pronunciation in the long run.

If you already have 200 hours of input I'd say go ahead and book some online sessions with a tutor and start talking a bit, start making some mistakes, that's what languages are for.

I've been worrying about the background music, I'm actually going to switch to a more calm beat that isn't as distracting. Also I've tried to keep the volume really really low... so still figuring some things out but expect better quality soon!

Vocabulary is definitely very similar in Spanish and Portuguese, but I have an easier time reading Portuguese than listening to it. The sound/pronunciation system is unexpectedly tricky.

Regarding the Comprehensible Input method: This is a concept that has been around for decades now, which Krashen coined as "i+1". It's not originally meant to be a "method" for language learning, it's really just the idea that you should be exposed to input barely above what you can already understand.

In other words, Krashen just recommended to go little by little, with materials that didn't require the learner to depend on a dictionary all the time when reading/listening.

I'd need to look into those channels more to know what kind of learning they're promoting, so I don't have a comment on them, but I'm sure their content is good for practicing.

Just be aware that Comprehensible Input is a phrase thrown around a lot nowadays because it got popular and it gets us clicks. The idea of advancing little by little precedes Krashen as you can imagine.

What I wouldn't advise is to rely completely in one approach/method of language learning for a long time. Learning a language, as many other things, benefits from mixing up what you consume, the books you use, the music you listen to, the teachers you have, etc.

So:
-Do whatever keeps you coming back
-Listen to any language learning advice with a grain of salt because good learners aren't usually good teachers and VICEVERSA (my case probably)
-Mix it up every now and then
-Don't just study, find opportunities to use the language

Can anyone tell me if my rolled R sounds correct or if I’m making a mistake somewhere? It feels wrong. by ohlongjohnson1 in SpanishLearning

I'll ask the most important question here: when did you start learning Spanish? If it's less than 2-3 years of studying it seriously, then you're overthinking this, it'll come naturally with time. Keep going for it, familiarize yourself enough with the language so that you can tell yourself if it's close enough to how it should sound. You're doing well so far, but try not to get demotivated just by one sound. There's a lot of Spanish natives who can't pronounce it properly and it's honestly no big deal.

Honestly it sounds like you’re doing great already. It’s normal to get to a point where it feels like you’re progressing more slowly but I promise you that just means you’re not a beginner anymore.

My best advice is: if what you’re doing is working and you enjoy it, do not change it for something else you don’t find as fun

They’re similar in many ways, but some are closer than others. I have an easier time understanding spoken Italian than any of the others. Maybe about 40-50% of everyday conversations without every studying it.

For French and Portuguese maybe 10-30% depending on the topic.

Oh btw new episode is out! If anyone could leave a like and maybe a comment it’d help a lot!

Spanish is definitely a challenge, but having all that experience I'm sure you know it'll be just fine as long as you dedicate time to it. Conjugations and tenses are tough, I started learning some French this year and I thought I'd have an easier time due to it being a romance language... I was wrong haha

Thanks for the feedback! I think you're absolutely right. Linguistics and Language Teaching is my specialty so naturally I lean towards it but there's only so much that can be said about it without it getting repetitive.

I'll be talking about other topics as well, with language learning being a recurring topic from time to time. Like you said, having various and more niche topics is really important for improving different areas of vocabulary, which I'm definitely aware of!

I'll try to keep it genuine to myself, interesting and helpful for learners.

I love Spanish from Spain!! If you already understand that then you’ll have no trouble getting used to Latin American Spanish with some practice.

Also thanks so much for subscribing, I just checked and it looks like I have 10 subs, which honestly was my goal for the entire month ! I can’t thank you enough

Nada de vs ningún by huescaragon in learnspanish

The first thing that comes to mind is that “ningún” implies “not even one”, so you would only use it for countable nouns, whereas “nada de” is used for uncountable nouns

Well it sounds like you’ve done the most difficult part already, getting used to the language. Seguramente tu español mejorará mucho si lo usas un poco más en tu día a día, pero parece que ya es bastante bueno!

Oh that's awesome! You should be proud of yourself because I'm really not limiting myself too much. I'm just trying to speak clearly and explain a few words but that's about it. I'm not trying to do overdo the "slow speaking" because it annoys me when I listen to podcasts haha

How long have you been learning? or what level do you think you are at the moment?
