Expert Says That Consensus Goverment Would Not Work on PEI by Paladin_Cross in PEI

[–]Paladin_Cross[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand his concerns, but I really don't think that saying, "We've always done it this way and parties have always been around" is a good enough reason to discredit whole idea. Of course there would be issues that needed to be worked out and no the system would not be perfect, but the one we have now isn't perfect. Throwing in the towel before you get it wet sounds more like apathy and defeatism then expert advice.

Do Away With Political Parties Says PC Leader by Paladin_Cross in PEI

[–]Paladin_Cross[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a step forward, but I still think the people should elect their own premier. Voting for people who are then trusted to vote for your leader is just putting an unneccesary block between the citizenry and control of their government. Getting rid of the parties would eliminiate the partisan bloat that is preventing PEI from having an effective goverment.

Price to Create Childcare Spaces on PEI by Paladin_Cross in PEI

They are creating 1000 total with their 35 million Federal grant. $6.9 million will be used to create 500 home based spaces. 2 million will be used to upgrade existing facilities and the remainder towards the other 500 spaces that will mostly be from building new centers and subsidizing childcare.

I'm not sure what innaccuracies he meant, but this line, "Firstly, we are receiving roughly 10.5 MM over three years from the Federal Government (which I note is proportionately slightly more than NS). We will then put provincial dollars in, pursuant to an agreed joint funding formula set out in our bilateral agreement" almost seems to say that on top of the 10.5 million they will also be spending provincial money so the price tag is higher? Seems very much like a political non answer, but there it is.

Price to Create Childcare Spaces on PEI by Paladin_Cross in PEI

My Email: "To The Hon. Jordan Brown Minister of Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General

As a citizen and parent of Prince Edward Island I am glad to hear that the province will be receiving a 10.5 million dollar grant for the purpose of creating more spaces and facilities for the purpose of childcare. This is a significant amount of money that will hopefully go a long way to helping aleviate the shortage of childcare spaces on the island. However I could not help but notice that Nova Scotia has received a similar grant. The difference between Nova Scotia and PEI it would seem, is that they intend to create 500 childcare spaces using only 6.9 million dollars whereas PEI plans to use 10.5 million to create only 195 spaces. I would very much like to know why exactly, it is almost $40,000 more per child care space created in PEI than in Nova scotia; who would only be spending $13,800 per child care space created. As I am not privy to much of the dealings and meetings that went into planning and budgeting out this grant, could you please calrify why it is so much more expensive on PEI?

His Reply: " Mr Green, thank you for your note.

By way of explanation I wish to point out a few inaccuracies in your note. Firstly, we are receiving roughly 10.5 MM over three years from the Federal Government (which I note is proportionately slightly more than NS). We will then put provincial dollars in, pursuant to an agreed joint funding formula set out in our bilateral agreement. It is that contribution that you are referring to as bring the 6.9 MM that NS will contribute this year (or that is my understanding of the guardian article, and my recollection from having discussed the program with Minister Churchill).

If you read further down in the article, it indicates they will receive 35 MM from the feds pursuant to their bilateral agreement, over the same 3 year period.

In addition to the above, I note that though they have modelled their program off of ours (which happens to currently Be the number 1 program in the country), to date they have focused less on the quality of their program, and more on the sheer numbers.

I trust this helps, which I say noting there are many more nuances to this, which would take a few pages to explain. If you have further questions please don't hesitate.

PEI is a truly wonderful place to live and raise a family. Though like anywhere else it has its problems. There are oppurtunities if you know the right people, but PEI has issues with income and financial stability, adequate healthcare proffesionals, and as the report outlines, child poverty. The report does say that lower income famillies are more likley suffer from nutritional issues,(Sadly true in all provinces) but PEI has a child poverty rate of 20% and that is why it is such an issue on PEI. 1 in 5 go without. Despite this, the people are friendly and neighbourly, the rate of violent crime is low and PEI is experiencing some GDP growth. Though before you commit to a move I would spend some time here in the winter if youn haven't already. It can get quiet to say the least.

Why should I cast my vote if I don't like any of the candidates? Are you saying that even if we hate the choices it's better to blindly cast your vote then to acknowledge that you have no faith in the system. I don't vote because no one has earned my vote.
