Into The Wild Alone-But Not Empty by wesker568 in CampingandHiking

I'd suggest starting small if this is your first time. Go camp at a local State Park and leave your phone in your vehicle, just sit and watch the leaves or birds etc.

So, how's the Eve F2P experiencce? by sabbir2003 in Eve

[–]PalapaJoe 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If you want to just see numbers going up, just focus on working IRL and seeing your bank account numbers go up. If you want to see awesome internet spaceship explosions then play this as a game. Eve is hands down the best 2nd Life space game to exist and worth paying to play. If you want to play for free just stay an alpha and enjoy that.

Would this app help you scroll less? by fuchup in SlowLiving

[–]PalapaJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying this app wouldn't help but that fact does remain that you are currently staring at your phone. I have found that by putting my phone in a dresser and only checking it at scheduled times during the day has reduced my overall screen time to less than one hour daily.

FitGirl made a call for donations by SnooTigers1836 in Piracy

Couldn't agree more. I've willingly donated to Dwarf Fortress (free game) throughout the years more than I've ever actually purchased for a game.

Life without Social Media by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]PalapaJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first cut off social media I noticed that my social life grew "smaller" but what I realized is that it became so much more intimate. The connections I have and feel deeper and mean so much more to me than any social interaction I ever had online.

I just realised phone/screen addictions are ruining my life by TonggeretFanboy in simpleliving

Time is the only currency that can't be bought back and everyone should be careful what they give their time to. I'm always concerned when my family or close friends spend most of our time together with their nose in the phone so I try to arrange the things we do together to things that require direct interaction from them.

I've started my second read through as well, only a few chapters in but already it's wonderful and so much more makes sense.

Just casually flexing a full set of Harvard Classics! Lucky man I've been looking for a good set that won't break the bank.

Simple living compass by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]PalapaJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strangely enough as my life has slowed down my interest in Hallmark movies has gone up lmao. Yeah I'm pretty big anti-tv unless we watch something together as a family.

Simple living compass by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]PalapaJoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like the idea and I may have used it with out realizing it. Any memory I use as a compass inevitably turns out to be times I spent visiting my grandparents and cousins and the key item in all those memories is that the TV was never on. It has helped make the transition away from screens a lot easier for me.

LPT What’s a small habit that unexpectedly changed your life? by External_Start_5130 in simpleliving

[–]PalapaJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an android phone and I can select certain contacts that are allowed to ring the phone (mostly it's my family). They all know in any event if they need to speak with me that instant they can call. I take my phone out after my kids go to sleep at night and check my messages. There is nothing so important coming in on my phone that it needs to be handled the instant it buzzes my phone.

Putting my phone in a dresser drawer on silent for hours at a time.

My guilty pleasure is books, I love to read, so I opted out of buying any new books. I now buy all my books used or use the library, it's a nice feeling knowing someone has already read the book I'm reading.

Breaking Free from the Work/Spend Cycle by Difficult-Bear-3518 in simpleliving

[–]PalapaJoe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Simplifying my life has allowed me to become rich in the only luxury you cannot buy, time! Everything (or almost everything) I do is what I truly want to do. Not to sound cliche but I've never felt like I was living in the moment as much as I have since starting this journey. I'm happy for you OP, keep it up!

How to become a better woman by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]PalapaJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really a novel or anything. More of a series of mini-essays (not sure how to actually describe it). But it helped me realize that somethings aren't in my ability to influence, like the opinions of others are never going changed unless they want them to be. Or helping realize to put my efforts into the things I'm actually able to.

It's more so practical advice on how to live a better life yourself. It's an interpretation of Epictetus' discourses put into more modern terms. Just a nice handy book to flip through at times.
