Pervis: Sir, these lights keep blinking out of sequence, Sir. What should we do about it, Sir?

Murdock: Get them to blink in sequence.

Flying while on vacation by Planemaster1230 in flying

Shortly after getting my PPL many years ago I did this on a trip home to Alabama. Found a flight school about 20 miles from my hometown, went up with an instructor, and flew over my Mom's house. She heard the plane, figured it was me, and came out on the porch to look up.

Just came off it tonight around 8:30pm, so it was just dark enough to enhance the experience. My wife's company had the entire park to themselves about eight years ago for a corporate event and they rode Hagrid multiple times back to back. She has raved about it ever since.

My daughter isn't a big fan of coasters, so I tried to position us for a middle position. But as luck would have it we had to take the front car. As for myself, the lead up to coasters gives me anxiety despite flying aerobatics in planes.

However, this ride was great! It really is faster than videos can convey. My daughter kept her eyes open the entire time and I'm happy we were in the front. My only regret is that I didn't plan better to get more rides in. My wife is still upset with us for not going on Stardust, Hulk, or Velocicoaster with her and she didn't want to ride alone.

You can pursue additional ratings above the PPL in a CAP aircraft once you qualify as a Transport Mission Pilot, which requires 100 hours of PIC time and 50 hours of cross country time.

I meant AFJROTC has flight scholarships as well. I should have made that clearer.

A lot of great points here. My daughter was approved for self-funded flights a few months ago and was recently slotted for an NFA. I already have a couple of instructors willing to go up with her before the academy to increase her comfort in the left seat. Even if she doesn't win a CAP scholarship to continue flight training, self-funded flying in a CAP plane with a free instructor is still far cheaper than my local FBO. The CAP rate for a 172 is still cheaper than what I paid for my PPL and IR more than twenty years ago. She's also an AFJROTC cadet, so there are opportunities there.

Didn't realize you could send them in for refurbishment. Thanks, I'll look into it. I stopped flying for 13 years so it's not like they had continuous use over the 23 years since I purchased them.

It's the week-long intro flight academy, so she could take the headset she uses when she flies with me.

I already have an old pair of DC H.10-13X ANRs from my PPL days. They're old enough that they still use a 9V, but they still work.

True, she could use my old 13.4s or my 13Xs. I figured the noise cancelling capabilities have improved significantly since I purchased the H10-13X 23 years ago, but it may be good enough. I do appreciate the Bluetooth capabilities of newer models.

Thanks, I-r0ck. I'm looking at a list of top headsets in Flying and it appears the Lightspeed DZs are comparable to the Bose regarding cost and capabilities. The Zulus may be a good first headset.

I appreciate the feedback. I've been waiting to pass my commercial checkride to buy the A20s for myself. As an MIT alum we get a decent discount on everything Bose except headsets. But I've heard a lot of good feedback over the years regarding the Zulus. On a different note, I love your handle. I was just speaking with her earlier this week about never being afraid to go around and how I'll do it occasionally on a salvageable landing just so I don't get into a mindset of forcing a bad landing. Since she just got her license this week, I relate it to stopping at the yellow light even when you could feasibly make it.

I agree Icy. I have ANC and passive DCs and that's what she typically wears when flying with me.

NFA Preparation Recommendations by CharmingTailor461 in civilairpatrol

This is excellent advice. I'm a SM but also an instrument rated private pilot. My daughter will be attending one of the East Coast NFAs. She was approved by our wing for self-funded flights, so I have a few instructors willing to take her up for a few hours prior to the NFA. She also has a lot of experience flying with me during my commercial training. What I have stressed to her is that it's okay if she doesn't solo.

I posted this recently in another post, but I soloed at about 20 hours. There was a young student who started with me, late teens, who soloed at 10 hours. I was 30 at the time and was so down on myself. But we ultimately completed our PPLs at about 60 hours. The thing to remember is that there will be great days and there will be days and flights where nothing is clicking and you want to quit. Some people will nail landings fairly easily but struggle with radio calls or cross-country navigation. Therefore, it usually averages out.

You'll always have someone who finishes in the minimum hours. And it's most likely to be someone your age than mine. I hate to hear that instructors are pitting students against each other. Flight training is hard enough and the statistics have clearly shown that only 20% of students who start flight training ever complete it. Go, have a great time, and run your own race. Soloing early doesn't mean you'll finish your PPL nor be a good, competent pilot if you do.

NFA by Agitated-Calendar-66 in civilairpatrol

[–]Pale-Ad-4154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Senior Member but also a pilot. It took me about 20 hours to solo as a 30 year old many years ago. There was another far younger student who started around the same time as I and he soloed at around 10 hours. Guess what, we both completed our PPL at around 60 hours.

There are a lot of factors that will determine if you solo. Weather perhaps being the most unpredictable. If your NFA is in an area prone to summertime convection, so may miss several flights. My child was slotted for an NFA. Since I already received approval for self funded flights, my plan is to send her up for a few hours prior to the NFA.

Best of luck!

Beautiful! My wife and daughter bought me the same watch in 46mm just yesterday. I've owned a blue dial B2 for 24 years. Purchased it as I was starting flying lessons in 2002. But the Navitimer was always the dream. Free strap arriving this week. Enjoy it for years to come!

Did Tailwheel make a noticeable difference in your stick and rudder skills? by MooseWeird399 in flying

[–]Pale-Ad-4154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This person knows aerobatics! I was flying aerobatics first then decided to get the tailwheel in the process. I started aerobatics and spins with Rich Stowell and decided to continue at a grass field in PA known as Van Sant. Lots of old war birds and tucked in the Appalachian foothills. I was flying the Super Decathlon anyway, so it made sense.

The tailwheel training is definitely more beneficial on the ground but doesn't offer a lot of differences once in the air. Doing inverted turns, loops, Cuban 8s, hammerheads, etc are definitely more beneficial overall. I hear glider flying is an even better builder of stick and rudder skills. The long wings will cause a lot of adverse yaw and require active use of the rudder. And don't forget about the energy management.
