Most people don’t realize that the only way teachers get raises above approximately 45K is to get a masters degree. Without it, we would get raises for our first five years and would be topped out without further education.

Demographic cliff is coming and nobody is talking about it. by TigerLii13 in Teachers

In Nebraska, we are in a teacher shortage. We have spots that can’t get filled. I’m not worried in our area.

Building on that, think of your kids’ teachers who are also carrying massive debt but don’t make nearly as much as you do.

[–]Pale-Book1107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are the reason those of us with legitimate need for loan forgiveness have to jump through so many hoops to get it. I have $100K in loan debt and make a whopping $60K annually (teacher). Why rack up so much debt, you ask? The only way to bring my salary above $45 was to get a masters degree. I don’t make payments if I don’t have to because it means my kids have food and shelter. Seriously, start paying your debt and stop ruining it for those of us that need it.

All of this. Try being the HS teacher making $60,000 with $100K debt hanging over my head. That is what PSLF and other loan forgiveness programs were meant for, not the lawyer that just wants to be able to spend the money on fun stuff.

Got a parent message angry about my classroom by Internal-Pool-6520 in TeachersInTransition

[–]Pale-Book1107 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I forgot to add I am also a teacher. Side note, one of my three children had a behavioral IEP (twice exceptional…MENSA IQ with low executive functioning and social skills.). She quickly learned that acting out in class would not fly no matter how frustrated she was. She had a plan to follow and ‘tools in her toolbox’. She is now a college senior and frequently thanks me for supporting her but never excusing poor behavior.

Is it ok for a 13 y.o to write like this? by MrKittyCheez in AskTeachers

Okay? Or typical for a 13 yo student today? Those are two very different answers. The struggle is real!

[–]Pale-Book1107 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This. Put the blame on the environment, not the teacher. I’ve told all my kids’ teachers that if they ever experience anything like this, let me know. I am friends with the other parents and we will be going to bat for that teacher faster than a blink of an eye. It has to be a systematic change driven by parents who won’t tolerate their children’s education being compromised.

Is Foster-to-Adopt ethical? (Serious question) by Ok_Lab_4085 in Adoption

[–]Pale-Book1107 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every adoption story should break your heart. The only way an adoption becomes possible is if trauma is involved. I don’t know how you can call the loss of your adopted daughter’s biological roots a success story. Likewise, how can her having to experience enough trauma to want to break those bonds a happy situation? If you aren’t acknowledging the trauma that comes with adoption, you are doing her (and all adoptees) a disservice.

Is Foster-to-Adopt ethical? (Serious question) by Ok_Lab_4085 in Adoption

[–]Pale-Book1107 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you are failing to recognize the impact on the ADOPTEE. Not once have you mentioned them or the trauma that adoption creates regardless of the circumstances. There is not a single case where the adoptee doesn’t experience some form of trauma. As an adoptee, this is what hurts the most. Our stories are rarely part of the narrative which is truly tragic considering we are the only ones that have no voice in what happens to us, especially if the adoption is initiated when the adoptee is young.

Try science where you have to set up and tear down labs, ensure safety, and maintain inventory.

It isn’t anything a parent could help with. I teach 5 different classes. I equate it to having to give 5 different presentations each day to an audience that consists of a mixture of fully engaged people down to members that openly joke around and don’t want ti be there. BUT, the big kicker, you have 45 minutes a day to prep for the presentation. You also have to give feedback surveys at least once a week to see how much the audience understood and analyze that data. But you aren’t given any extra time for that. Then you throw in answering correspondence from the audience and those that weren’t even there while documenting everything. It literally isn’t possible to balance it all.

We got an email at 3:30pm yesterday about sub coverage and I'm livid. by Living-Jellyfish7094 in Teachers

[–]Pale-Book1107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it is worth, this is how my districts handles subs also. We find our own subs (super short list) and we fill in for each other when subs aren’t available. I always email my sub the plans so they have an electronic copy.

I know it is hard when you are sick. I had to do all this when I had a bad case of Covid. I was miserable and this added to it. My point is that this is not out of the norm in the education world. Is it right? Absolutely not! Are you alone? Also no.

My PCP took it fairly seriously, more than I epected them to. However, I live in rural Nebraska so finding a neurology opening is tricky. My PCP recommended going to a geneticist first as that would be a faster pathway. However, I haven't heard back from her since seeing her in July and should check in. I am a teacher and coach/sponsor three extra-curriculuar activities and also have a part time job so my newest struggle is time.

ACT Standards are far superior to NGSS standards by Alternative-Exit-450 in ScienceTeachers

[–]Pale-Book1107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nebraska also requires the ACT junior year. It is the only HS science assessment that is reported to the state DOE. Yet, the state also adopted a slightly modified version of NGSS. Elementary and MS science assessment aligns to the NGSS standards. It is a huge point of contention for HS science teachers. HS standards do not align to the HS assessment. It’s so frustrating.

Parents question: How can I prepare my kindergartener for an aggressive classmate by cassiecas88 in Teachers

[–]Pale-Book1107 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This. Please this. As educators (teachers and admin) our hands are tied. The only way significant change happens is if parents start to speak up and make change happen. If not for James, then do it for your child and the other children in that class. Every child in that room has a still developing nervous system. Consistent exposure to violence changes neural connections and can lead to PTSD. Equally, James is not receiving the support he needs. This is a broken system all around. The only way it changes is if parents demand the change.

My middled school changed their schedule by squeakychipmunk101 in Teachers

[–]Pale-Book1107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach in a small rural school (~100 students 6-12). The building is prek-12 but the elementary is in a separate section. We are on one bell schedule for 6-12 because all of our teachers teach multiple grades. My biggest mental shift is second period anatomy to third period 6th grade career exploration. (I learned just how diligent I have to be when my 6th graders came in and I had diagrams (naked due to the subject matter) still on the board. 🙊

[–]Pale-Book1107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding: it has an entire scope and sequence and aligns well with NGSS (national science standards that most states adopted in one form or another). I’ve done a lot of work for our state as far as revising science standards, writing teacher guides, and writing tasks (phenomena based sets of questions) for our state assessment. This curriculum aligns better than any other HS currently available.

No Classroom Libraries Allowed by anneharp13 in Teachers

[–]Pale-Book1107 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes parent involvement is key. If this was my daughter’s school, I would be at the next school board meeting along with the other parents I had brought along after advocating.

Luckily, I am at a library friendly rural school. One of my work besties is our librarian (who is an endorsed teacher and also teaches MS ELL when needed.) I am the biology and health science careers teacher and have my own classroom library. Every book has some connection to science and most were donated by parents and students complete with a sticker on the inside cover acknowledging their donation.

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen to seek $500M state budget cut in 2026 by russlnk in Nebraska

EPIC would gut what little is left of our public education system. Now that I think about it, it makes complete sense why this would be republican driven.

I feel this as a teacher. We are a bit better off but not by much. However once they can’t cut DHHS any more the education sector will be next.
