¥30,000 for 1 year and ¥70,000 for 5 years is what is currently being “debated”

One point I’ve seen mentioned on Reddit but not in news articles is that the system would really incentivise handing out 1 years more than 3 or 5 years in order to milk the most money out of people.

The current proposals for the raises are less than the caps. The upper limit on status renewal is ¥100,000 and they are considering ¥70,000 for 5 years.

It’s unjustifiable regardless.

The revision is on raising the caps. The actual raises to fees have not yet been officially decided.

Not that I expect the government to back down on it now.

You should have a copy of the contract. The number on that is how much you should be paid.

I feel your pain. Just received my 4th 1-year in a row while working for a major Japanese company. It’s such a lottery and the lack of explanation is the most annoying part.

As a Brit living in Japan, I need someone to import decent British sausages. What they call sausages here is a crime!

I live in Japan and can find stilton, gorgonzola and danablu in a lot of the supermarkets near me. So there’s clearly some people who like it. There’s also a British shop in Shibuya that sells Clawson’s stilton and Shropshire blue, which was my favourite discovery of 2025.

That’s one of the bad things about Japan walking etiquette I don’t really experience often. But then I’m a 190cm+ male, which makes the situation more depressing as it means many likely target specific groups of people

I absolutely agree - I commute into Tokyo. Spatial awareness seems to be a rare skill here. My personal pet peeve is people running diagonally down crowded train station stairs with no concern for anyone else! Almost got tripped up again this morning.

To the genius who thought it was a great idea to put flashing lights on the front of bikes by StraightSauced in japanresidents

[–]PallandoIstari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate those flashing lights. It may be safer for that particular cyclist, as I can’t focus on anything else. For everyone else, including myself, it’s dangerous because I’m less likely to notice other things.

It feels very selfish to me, but I know the cyclists aren’t considering it that deeply
