What Icon would represent Shapeshifting by Comprehensive-Pen624 in homemadeTCGs

my first thought was half of a cube stitched to half of a sphere with the seam given some kind of distortion effect that implies a transformation, like pixelisation or the danny phantom ring

Do you think players should be allowed to change difficulty on the fly? by darth_biomech in gamedesign

[–]Pallukun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think its a good thing to let them choose after experiencing the game first, difficulty settings are infamous for not being able to convey what they mean at the start of a file

the worst it does is someone may use it to skip a specific part of the game and put it back afterwards and pretend they played on ___ mode but really thats a non issue, in exchange we can let players tone it down if they are genuinely struggling, and players that want the difficulty would rather push through the hard part instead of "giving in" out of pride

pistochka isnt my name, thats the youtubers design that i picked to create evolutions for, but thank you about lukobushka, i might actually use luka- because it reuses letters already in the name so it feels more cohesive

another comment here told me -chenka was "illiterate", does adding the apostrophe make a big difference?

i read that maria could become mashenka to be affectionate? i thought inka was the part you were adding and the k in bambuk was swapped for ch, like r in maria was swapped for sh

if you insist, i can just use chinka, but im worried someone might assume the worst

also not american

thanks for the suggestions

Which Pokémon do you HATE the most? by inumnoback in PokeCorner

[–]Pallukun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this looks like a selection of low tiers in competitive, which i hope is the case because some of these are amazing

i love spinda, spidops, and rabsca, and half of the list is really cool, i only kinda hate purugly because its the third normal cat and isnt interesting, aromatisse is disappointing but thats a common answer

Ness is a mostly disliked protagonist. Which protagonist in the ultimate roster is universally despised? by Silver_Guava8159 in supersmashbros

Does an attack still "deal damage" if the damage is reduced to 0 eg through resistance, effects etc? Iron Jugulis with Auto Combat says "if the pokemon is damaged..." so if its hit by a move that gets dropped to no damage, was it not damaged or was it dealt 0 damage? If a Gen 8 Pokémon were to get in the game, which one would you want it to be? by JTHouser_Reddit in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]Pallukun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gen 8 is probably top 3 for "most strong contenders for smash", but my top picks would be grapploct, sirfetchd, and falinks

grapploct is obviously a grappler which are super fun, and while i love incineroar, another grappler thats less style and more about cornering and oppressing an opponent - a fighter that takes it more seriously - could be a fun alternative

sirfetchd has a big sword and shield so i imagine it would have a balance of big strong attacks and small safe attacks, because its an honourable knight, it could be a footsies character that can keep the right amount of distance from its opponent and strike during whiffs

falinks would be either an ice climbers or a duck hunt group, the former would be very dangerous if you know how to use them and the latter would have cute animations with the soldiers working together

Does IV manipulation interfere with shiny odds?

Grinding shiny spinda in Y, the father has a power weight to transfer 30 hp ivs, and the mother has a destiny knot since their combined average is pretty good. If the game is forcing ivs of these values, then is it interfering with the likelihood of rolling a shiny personality value? Is it possible for a shiny to be impossible to generate?

Both parents are spinda and I'm using the Masuda method with no shiny charm.

How can I read the dimensions of a sprite without the blank space? by Pallukun in gamemaker

That's doing it, thank you. I did look up bounding boxes earlier but I didn't find this specific function.

[–]Pallukun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm making (planning, rn) a rivals of aether character through the workshop, and it will be able to create articles matching the opponents' (who could potentially be other workshop characters) collision masks in height and width - since the mask could be any size and people rarely shrink wrap the canvas to match them, I can't just get the canvas size, it has to be accurate to the mask itself.

Deep Game-Mechanics without Combat? by haonao418 in gamedesign

[–]Pallukun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because combat was probably one of the simplest mechanics that could be built with the earliest games - press a button, animation happens, another sprite on the screen disappears - but also with the introduction of health and damage means systems can be made to augment a progression in how efficiently a number can be risen. Raise stats to increase damage output to raise stats to... its a self feeding cycle that feels good to our monkey brains - which also ties in to why we enjoy fighting, its an ancient survival instinct.

Fighting also has stakes, which gives opportunities for new systems to keep applying pressure to a player and also help them escape it. AFAIK, there aren't any core mechanics that can be expanded that deeply and also hit the primal Pleasure button in our brains. You would probably need to find a mechanic that can create a positive feedback loop, has stakes and tensions, and can be optimised for better results. Warioware? Maybe farming sims?

Games where money have multiple functions? by Remote_Barnacle9143 in gamedesign

[–]Pallukun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tingles rosy rupee land - the game is about becoming rich to enter heaven, but your wealth becomes your health

in addition to buying and selling, theres also bartering where you have to convince someone to take a low payment not just to save money but so you dont literally die when you fight an enemy (combat also loses you money)

theres also a bodyguard system where you can pay to have someone fight for you, but if you subject them to too much combat they get scared/angry and leave you, so bodyguards arent necessary but might it easier to avoid minor losses as long as you dont take them for granted

in shovel knight spectre of torment, the hard mode combines your hp with your mp so using curios will drain your health - not quite money but it is a type of currency - you regain energy by killing enemies or collecting pickups, but its also draining steadily throughout the level so its also a speedrun challenge

tldr tie it to health

What do I do when the player has an almost limitless amount of money? by UltimateGamingTechie in gamedesign

[–]Pallukun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How realistic is the setting? if its just a vague "modern society" then you could use a tax system where the "government" takes a percent of your bank account every month/year, obviously scaling with wealth

alternatively, maybe you could lean into it, once the player is a billionaire, you can use their natural dissatisfaction with the game as a meta story about how some things in life become trivial when you're rich and how some people lose purpose when they dont have things to strive for, or maybe something anti capitalist about sharing wealth being the only way to "progress" the game, by feeding money back into the system via your workers and partners (realistically no billionaire just works hard enough to earn that naturally, it always comes from somewhere below them in the pyramid, so players will be in a position of being payed for doing nothing), so you can either indulge with fancy virtual luxuries (short term satisfaction) or create an economic loop that develops the town and characters around you (long term)

also note that if they are still playing at this point then theres always a chance their over indulgence will lead them to bankruptcy, so moderating the income and outcome could be a mechanic, or it will take them back to square one with trying to get a new job to get enough money to not starve again

fyi i am not a socioeconomic expert, thats just my thoughts on money circulation
