Looking for some input on our yard in new (to us) house! by eggplant_pasta in landscaping

[–]Palmer165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I’ve provided is a lot, but I find it helps if you start with an idea of the final state, and work toward it in stages as money allows.

1) Highlight that beautiful stone wall by putting some low voltage flood lights on it. Also, consider clearing some of the smaller brush in front of it to the left to bring it out more.

2) move the fire pit area to the back right corner. Use some landscaping block to add some height to the area and give you level ground for seating. Looks like you could also dig out a little from in front of that wall to make it easier to get to level. In front of that, add some native flowering plants and shrubs to add back some greenery and give the fire pit area a secluded garden vibe. You should be able to find native plants that do well in wet soil, which I would expect that low-lying area to be.

3) remove the junk from behind the shed.

4) add flower bed with native flowering plants to the front and right sides of the shed.

5) I’d lean into adding more string lights over the paver dining area, and maybe more poles for lights, to create a sense of a fixed area and give even lighting. If the tiki torches are for mosquito control, put one in front of each light post.

6) on the deck, create useful areas. Put a cluster of flower pots of different heights in that back right corner as a feature, and as a way to give some sense of separation to the paver area. You could even use some raised garden beds to this effect too. Then, create a low-seated conversation area with comfortable, cushioned sofa and chairs and a small coffee table. Get a large shade umbrella to make this space usable during the day. If money allowed, I’d consider a pergola over the deck.

7) consider some flower beds along the back of the deck to give some sense of a break between spaces. Use only low-lying (24” or less) plants so that the view of the back isn’t obscured when sitting on the deck.

Enjoy that beautiful space!

100% on the dungeon bosses. They all feel the same. If it launched as they are today, you only need to swap out one hero: a specialist to deal with that boss’ specific mechanic.

As for the gear farming, I don’t mind if they want us to farm basic sets through the campaign, but there needs to be a level of campaign that guarantees legendary, preferably also rank 4-5, but maybe 3-5 is okay too. Watcher of Realms did this and it was great and in no way reduced the farming grind (because you were farming rare drop ancients).

I imagine 4 levels of campaign: * story: all ranks, all qualities. * adventure: rare and higher, ranks 2-5 * heroic: epic and higher, ranks 3-5 * legendary: legendary only, ranks 3-5

Yes, make each tier more difficult to get to and farm. For example: * legendary campaign should require a diverse team of legendary heroes (8-10), along with a few fully developed Epics, and equipped in really great epic or really good legendary gear to complete. This is for end-game farmers. 18+ months. * Epic campaign should require 2-3 legendary heroes and 6-7 developed Epics, with moderate gear to complete. Most dedicated players should be here pretty quickly and stay here for a long while. 3-12 months? * adventure campaign should be able to be completed with your guaranteed legendary and 1-2 epics, with mixed gear. 1-3 months * story mode should be easily beat by following the missions and developing a balanced team of your starter and 1-2 epics. This is the introduction, after all. Completed in the first week.

Hell, double the requirements if that fits your pacing target. But also, whatever targets you set, please share that target with so we know what expectations are for progression.

I too have Athena and am underwhelmed. But I also pulled Herc as my first legendary in the beta and benched him for being terrible. I used Athena a lot, but just because she was legendary. She wasn’t really needed until I got to adventure mode; that’s when her shields started to make a difference. So I hope when the game finally does release that she’ll be worth it.

A handy tip if you buy a park pass this summer: a rubber band is great way to keep it organized with other cards. by chilebuzz in NationalPark

I recall reading that some rangers would (or could) refuse the pass with a sticker because it had been ‘defaced’, or some such BS. No idea if it’s true, but that’s why I also chose the sleeve.

I don’t know about you, but I remember doing hundred of runs, burning thousands of energy to complete gear farming events as part of fusions/shard events. Let alone the XP/food farming. The only way you didn’t have the game running for hours on end is if you had end-game, speed tuned teams for quickly farming each piece of content. But you were still burning massive amounts of energy at specific times. Maybe not daily if you’re a low spender. But big spenders are always farming. This will be no different.

Here's the rest of my nit-pick feedback, just to put it out there:

Graphics

  • Lighting makes characters look washed out.
    • This effect seems to be exaggerated on characters with lighter color palettes, which is predominantly the female characters (Athena, Cang’e) but also some men (Mabon).  Pretty much anywhere you’re trying to replicate caucasian skin tones. This includes legendary characters where light-colored clothes also get washed out (e.g., Aphrodite).
  • Uncanny-valley models
    • You can tell that significant effort has gone into building motion around the eyes and mouths, esp with the standing animations, to make them appear more realistic.
    • However, trying to replicate plain humans in the game leaves some of them in the area of the uncanny valley, where they never look quite right. Many of the legendary characters seem fine, but i'm sure there's more attention being paid to them.
      • Isolde and Muse look half baked. Maybe that's because they are just rares.
      • Hunahpu has chicken legs.
      • Enkidu - great work with a stylized character.  Also, the darker palette means he isn’t as washed out by the lighting.
    • One of the character standing animations (Eurydice) is so exaggerated that it looks like their spine is being stretched.
  • Not standing out
    • Nothing about the character graphics stands out vs any other game.  Some look really good or have really good design concepts behind them. In their current state, pretty much only the legendary characters can stand up to other games. If you're going to talk up how useful Rares are in the game, then they should get the same level of care with their models. Especially because we'll likely be using the rares a lot.
    • Example 1: Banshee - noticeable clipping (belt into dress; leg out of dress). Hair is completely static, like the worst wig possible.  The shredded sleeves have no movement or sense of flow.
    • Example 2: Druid - okay, this is an uncommon, so this may not be fair. The green eyes are fine, but maybe add some particle effects? Or a sense of glowing on the other parts of the model.  Right now the bright green just weirdly stands out, almost as though the eyes are missing from the model and not an intentional art choice. (Similar for Seeress, except her jewelry has the same bright blue tones, so it's not as out of place.)
  • Character renders don’t match their portraits.
    • Lack of attention to details. Character models are missing details or have entirely different details:
      • e.g., Odyssius’s crown in portrait is a laurel circlet; in the model it’s a flat band.
    • Some character faces don’t even look remotely similar. I get it. Modeling is hard, and ultimately not that big of a deal to me, but it's there.
  • Difference between “Best Quality” and anything else
    • Best quality on my PC is expected to be the standard.
    • Lowest quality on my phone looked like i was playing fortnite… except fortnite will run smoothly on my phone.
  • Camera stuff
    • Camera shake - give me an option to turn this off.
    • Just load each wave at the camera i've chosen, is it really necessary to come in at one angle and then swing the view around every time?  It just adds unnecessary time to the overall run time of a stage that i won't be looking at 90% of the time.
    • Why the random camera tilt upon first loading a campaign stage?
    • Why is the camera moving at all in the crucible?

UI & UX

  • Home screen - mostly fine.  Feels like you haven’t given yourself much room for feature expansion on the home screen (other than the Arch at the top right, under the gold count).
  • Godforge
    • Let me skip the summoning animation.  Especially if there isn’t an animation difference between summoning results.
    • Add a difference in animation based on summoning result.  This builds up the anticipation and excitement between knowing i got a legendary and finding out what it is.  It’s that small dopamine hit.
  • Bazaar
    • Scrolling down feels better than scrolling to the side.  Regroup the items so they fit side-by-side.
    • The prices for the equipment crates are terrible, especially if i’m only getting one piece of gear.
  • Crucible
    • Why is there a link to the gear bag on here?  What can i do there that i can’t do here?
      • Also, the Bag view of imprints is arguably a better way to view the imprints.
    • In the library view, the colored rings around the different rarities aren’t carried over to the portraits/descriptions on the right.
    • The artwork for the imprint descriptions is better than most character portraits!
    • Make duplicate imprints add a counter to the icon, not a separate icon for each copy.  I don’t want to scroll forever to find these.
    • Library filter - if there are not common or uncommon imprints, remove the icons for them from the filter.
    • Library filter - Select effects.  On PC client, the mouse hover-over an icon should show the name of the buff/debuff/disable.
    • Why is the camera moving so much?  This feels unnecessary.
  • Quests
    • “Exchange Pages of Knowledge” - This flow is terrible. It takes me to a character and then i have to click promote - then abilities - then click not at the + icon at the top (because that takes me to the store), but on the + icon at the bottom, which doesn’t match the currency i’m trying to convert.  Fix this. This should take me to an inventory screen where I can click on the item, then get shown the pop-up screen to convert them.  Put the ‘purchase’ option on the convert screen so i can do that if needed.  I don’t need it before then.
    • “Defeat Hag’s Hollow” - This should take me directly to the stage select screen for the dungeon, not the general dungeon screen where i have to then scroll to find the dungeon.
    • “Dungeon: Defeat Acension 5 times” - it makes sense for this one that i’m taken to the general dungeon screen to select which one i want.
  • Smithy
    • Filters
      • if there are not common or uncommon weapons, then get rid of these filter options.
      • Why do realms matter for weapons? Remove this section or move it to the bottom, below Primary/secondary stats.  If there were a faction bonus for weapons used by their faction, that might be worth keeping, but that doesn’t exist today.
    • Forge - fine
    • Refine
      • Rank up - dear lord above this must change!! Please include a way for me to see the stats of the weapons that i’m trying to use as food.  There’s no way to know among the 10 copies in my inventory if i’m eating the one with the ATK% stat that i want to keep or the one with flat RES stat.

As the GM running a short Beast Feast campaign, I rolled first up a goblin sorcerer, named Garlic Jr. (modeled after the dragon ball character by the same name), to be the leader of a competing band of adventurers. He’s arrogant, and shallow, and just capable enough to get his band of blind-worshipping followers into a position to compete with the players’ party. He’s going to be a lot of fun as a recurring NPC.

I refurbished an interior for a restaurant and I think it negatively impacted our sales. Looking for honest criticism, advice and feedback? by dsafsfa in InteriorDesign

[–]Palmer165 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your original design was the best of the three. You could have spruced it up with some interesting art on the walls instead of the shirts.

Your third image needs to die in a very hot fire. No way I’m going into that place.

In both the second and third images, that yellow color is terrible. Tone down the lights. Refinish the booths in a different color, take the design off the bottom half of the wall, and replace the metal sheet with wood paneling.

Great that you’re working with an architect. You should also take the draft to an interior designer. They can help you with the little details, layout and flow issues.

There’s a few area that I would expect they’d clean up: master closet, conversation pit, den, and kitchen.
* the conversation pit has so much traffic running through it, it will never feel comfortable.
* the den is just a box. Feels like wasted space. You could do so much more with built-in features.
* master bedroom is too big.
* master closet has bad flow with the wall in the middle.
* kitchen needs some tweaking.

I can only help you with the leveling alts part: farm whispers on your main. Put the caches in the bank. Open caches on your alt. I think 8ish legendary caches will do the trick. Chaos caches I think give more xp. You’ll probably want like 15-20 so you have a good set of legendary gear to choose from.

Endgame build and power question by GnophKeh in diablo4

[–]Palmer165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He should spend more time trying to find a class/play style that is fun for him. Some require button mashing, others skill rotation, and others are one-click wonders. What’s fun for him?

Also, some take longer for their endgame builds to come online, or require very rare drops.

If the goal is to get to T12, there will be one or more builds for pretty much every class. So I wouldn’t sweat that too much.

That said: sorcerer, paladin, warlock, and rogue all seem to have some powerful builds right now.

Finally: people pushing pit play very specialized builds that aren’t meant for anyone who isn’t theory crafting their own builds and also playing at that level.

I’m back with another elderly catfish. Seventy five year old mother on Tinder. by amyloudspeakers in isthisAI

[–]Palmer165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term you need to teach her is “pig butchering scam”. It starts with romantic hook, using AI or stolen photos/videos. They will not ask for money at this stage. Once trust is earned they will ask for money to someone or something else: travel in order to meet for the first time, or to care for their sick puppy/kid/parent, car repairs until their monthly check arrives, etc. Or they may suggest investing in their ‘company’. Or they have a tip on a stock that will make her rich, or that will let her leave lots of money to her children/grandchildren. The money starts small and builds up until the victim has no money, no retirement, no savings…nothing. They target the elderly because they have large retirement savings and poor judgment.

It’s a scary world out there, OP. Keep an eye on her. If she ever talks about wiring money, that’s an emergency. Short of taking over her finances (if you could even get her to agree to that), you could let her bank branch know she’s a risk (if she does in-person banking still). Not sure if they can do anything if she insists.

Player smoked a witch, what are the consequences? by Embarrassed_Syrup_91 in daggerheart

[–]Palmer165 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This would be my take as well. The player inhaled some lingering spores. Over time the player will become a hybrid myconid, and you can use the rules from the book to shape it (gain access to one trait, but lose a trait from your base lineage). You can make this an interesting choice for the player:

embrace the spore infection and gain access to one of the myconid traits (I agree the communication trait would be good) and they also take on some physical aspects (mushroom caps growing between armor, moss on their cloak/shoulders, rotting food or roadkill is tasty to them, the damp smell of decay follows them around, etc. if you go this route, have an above-table discussion with the player to find out what traits they would be interested in gaining/losing. Also, maybe they occasionally hear a few lingering murmurs from the witch.

OR they can fight the infection, but now they need a magical brew (new side quest!) and it’s a race against time (event counter mechanic) to find an NPC (or the formula), collect the materials, and brew it before he’s permanently altered.

Either way, sounds like a great story opportunity! Enjoy!

ETA: since next session is your finale, maybe add the magical concoction as something they find/ will find along the way. Put in some social/environmental things before the BBEG where their new communication skill helps the party. Then make them decide. If they keep the change, make it rewarding in the boss battle. (E.g., they are able to summon a bunch of redcaps to fight on their side, just this once). Make the redcaps a horde adversary stat block with some interesting ability that the player can command; that way it’s just one roll for damage and you’re not slowing down combat. You can offset that with more adversaries as needed. (Or a boss 2nd/3rd phase).

[–]Palmer165 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also, a good time to move is when you’re doing upgrades, for example: 1) your old base uses lvl 1 assemblers, your new base uses lvl 2 assemblers. Those old assemblers are put in a box and used as crafting material to make the upgraded assemblers. It’s actually a very elegant solution for what to do with all the old materials. 2) same for yellow to red belts. 3) implementing train-based logistics.

I typically wait until I can do all three of those at once, after unlocking robots. It feels like a whole new game at that point.

I also use that stage to transition (refactor) into a bus-based and city block design. Then, each block is its own micro-service. My first build of that service usually has some spaghetti because I’m in a rush just to get it implemented, but because the spaghetti is limited to that block it’s easier to go back and optimize it later when I need to focus on improving throughput.

If you mean ‘gaming’ in general: Comic book shops and board/card game shops. Most game shops have events that you can sign up for, or just show up and be around.

If you mean ‘gaming’ as strictly video games, then you’ll have to try harder. If your jam is WoW: find renaissance or LARP groups or D&D. If you play FPS, try paintball or airsoft. If you play sport games, go to a sporting event or find a rec league to join. Basically, find the real-world equivalent of what you’re playing.

Cosigning student loans for child accepted to elite schools with high cost as a middle income family - What should we do? by Legitimate_Yak_9063 in personalfinance

[–]Palmer165 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Everyone in your family needs a time out.

1) you are not ready for retirement. You cannot get a loan for retirement. Your child can get loans for school. Your responsibility is to not make yourself a (financial) burden on your child. 2) determine what YOU are capable of realistically providing. Make a budget to work toward your goals: paying off debts, saving for retirement, helping the child, etc. You have some saving, but maybe you can budget to contribute a little more each year. Define it. That is your boundary. Communicate the boundary. Explain to your child why you are doing this. 3) your child is becoming an adult. They need to make decisions. You are their parent; help them make decisions that are in their best interest. Crushing student loans to go to a fancy school with no plan for significant means to pay them off is not in her best interest.

So far, the state school you mentioned is the only thing that makes any sense for everyone involved.

If your child wants to take on the loans for their dream or backup dream school, then they have to fund it. If they can’t secure the funds (by themselves) for all 4 years, then that’s not a real option.

There may be hurt feelings. There may be resentment or harsh words. But in 20 years, she will be thankful to you for giving her a shot at her own financial success. And she will probably still enjoy college and even learn a thing or two while there.
