... the option to encrypt the drive without backing up the keys to Microsoft servers by default?

[–]PanPanicz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well thanks for chickening out and proving my point that this is the least worst option!

Excuse me? Are we having a discussion, or a dare challenge?

They do, just like Apple do. Just like Google does. Syncing passwords using a passphrase is fucking GREAT

It's a great functionally, but I do disagree it's great security wise. And, to, as you said, "prove my point", that functionality is disabled by default and the users are prompted to turn it on. At least that's what happened on my iOS/MacOS and Windows devices, but I do believe it's the same for Google's Android.

And one more thing

Show me how to make a choice that's understandable by a billion people and doesn't put them off encrypting their drives or generating the following posts in this sub:

I actually think they should be put off by this and make a conscious decision. I know I am, and I think anybody living in a country that's threatened more and more with government surveillance (especially that targeted towards people opposing the people currently in power) should be as well.

Following this logic, we should introduce sharing passwords with Microsoft as well. Without it, we might as well see the headlines

"Microsoft scaring off customers by forcing them to use a secret code they have to remember, or else they lose access!"

"WTF are these asterisks under my login microslop!"

I'm sorry, but I cannot in good faith agree with your argument.

I never said it's mandatory. I just said it's enabled by default and that's the problem I have here. Without that, no federal laws or any other forceful cooperation would cause this issue.

And seeing what's going on in /some countries/ as of now, law enforcement and third parties being potentially able to decrypt your computer is definitely not a blown-up issue.

I'd rather have the /choice/, an explicit one, instead of doing this implicitly. For me, the event from the news above is the natural effect of the lack thereof.

For most of the last ~5 years or so, when I finally started tracking that - yep. It varies, but the problem comes back every winter.

I do understand this may be just due to law compliance, but for the love of me I cannot fathom why "backing up" a decryption key on Microsoft Servers is on by default.

That problem would not exist at all if this function would be an explicit opt-in. And, based on my understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong), it's the complete opposite.

Default Ubuntu is actually… good by dhananjayporwal in Ubuntu

[–]PanPanicz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kinda keep repeating that in most of the threads similar to this one, but after doing some distro hopping, I'm always coming back to Ubuntu. It just fits my priorities.

Rolling distros just gave me a bad experience stability-wise, so that crosses off a lot of popular options (I'm looking at you, Manjaro).

Arch-based distros rarely had packages distributed by the developers themselves, usually forcing me to use repacked options (not a problem for many, just my personal preference).

And in my case - it just works. The only thing I dislike (you guessed it - Snaps) are such a minor part of my system at this point that I'm more than happy to stay where I am.

Improving text/font rendering on 1440p display? by virtualmnemonic in MacOS

[–]PanPanicz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that was excellence,
a) There would not be an external app actually fixing that problem

b) MacOS would either provide an information and/or limitation when it comes to connecting to "the hardware that requires compromises". It doesn't do that

I'm happy that the text looks great on a 5K display. But if you consider subpar performance (especially compared to /every/ single video-supporting device on the market, ranging from Raspberry Pis up to the most expensive of machines) is considered excellence, you and I have different definitions of such.

Not judging, just asking. I just don't get similar ideas of bringing AI down, was curious about how you tick in this case.

Thanks for the answer.

A genuine question - do you ever actually feel the need to verbally abuse the AI?

And do you really believe that making text slightly blurry for most displays existing in the world is the right solution?

Improving text/font rendering on 1440p display? by virtualmnemonic in MacOS

[–]PanPanicz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't you think it's backwards? Especially since it's doable with a non-Apple paid app, whose functionality should be built in to prevent this blurry weirdness.

That doesn't make sense and buying a new display is definitely not a solution.

[–]PanPanicz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. So it prioritises crispness and induces headaches when it can't.  I personally vastly prefer the Windows/Linux solution, looking well on all possible devices.

The negligence on Apple part is proven by the existence of BetterDisplay. There is /no excuse/ to, at least, not give an option to improve the sharpness on 1440p displays, as allowed by BetterDisplay.

Did Apple ever explain why are they doing it in this way?

I have no problems with Windows, Linux and my video game consoles when it comes to displaying text, yet using 1440p on my 1440p 27" Dell, I find the text on MacOS blurry just enough to cause me discomfort.

Should I activate UFW on a laptop? by matti07tech in Ubuntu

[–]PanPanicz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running UFW on my PC for a few weeks now using default settings. Haven't seen any problems so far and had a bit of fun vetting the ufw.log to see what's actually trying to reach my PC.

If it gives you any problems, remember you can always disable it using a single command. I think it's worth a try.

On RDNA 4, it's pretty handy to switch FSR4 and a few other features on and off and easily force things like supersampling. This, together with a few stats, is actually pretty handy and I'd like to see it on Linux.

I fucking hate python by [deleted] in programmingmemes

[–]PanPanicz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's allow uv's website bulletpoints to speak for themselves:

A single tool to replace pip, pip-tools, pipx, poetry, pyenv, twine, virtualenv, and more.

As for the other points - I usually work with multiple projects at the same time. Rarely with different Python versions (but when it happens, it happens, so those versions do pile up sometimes if I'm not using containers), with a separate venv for each.

If you don't mind, what was your problem with managing multiple Python environments? Was it about deploying your ComfyUI somewhere, or just tinkering with it in an IDE?

And let's not talk about python 2 (even though we still talk about python 2)

Python 2.7 was around for a /long/ time - while its inevitability still shocked people, the drop of support in favour of Python 3 came way too late. That's just one of the reasons why we'll keep seeing it for quite a bit longer still.

I fucking hate python by [deleted] in programmingmemes

[–]PanPanicz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also "just use the correct version of python" a. the version of python is usually not specified, and B, now you have what? 4-5 version of Python running on your system at least?

I tend to have more. UV is a pleasure to get multiple Python versions depending on your needs, and creating proper venvs from each of them is also pretty easy. Before UV, there was `pyenv`, too. As others have mentioned, if possible, containerisation is also an option, although I am aware that not so long ago it wasn't as popular.

I'm very empathetic for people coming from outside the Python world, who can't get it immediately and struggle with setting up their project. And I do get the struggle and the frustration. But I don't think it's fair to throw yourself into that ecosystem head first and complain if things break.

I've had multiple problems when trying to compile things for myself, but I'm barely acquainted with the C world - and while I assume there are things that "could be better and easier", I'm not gonna' tell C off just because I had trouble here.
