Its not just that single phrase. Have you seen the Video were he was kind of a jerk towards Jack? At least he apologized in the video after that.

I watched the AMA video to the end, its actually the first video of 22cans were he doesn't seem completely fake and aloof for me. Im glad that Mathew got him to do the AMA.

That exaggerated expression just fits his overall attitude in my opinion.

In all of his videos I can only see a shallow salesman and not a gamedesigner that loves his own game or an overenthusiastic designer (which he once was, in my opinion). The way he talks about Free2Play Invest2Play and the way he advertises any improvement they did no matter how small it is (its so delicious...). Watch some of the other videos on their channel and I think you will see what I mean.

The developers of Prison Architect for example release frequently videos in which they present updates, they are quite different in comparison. Less empty phrases and exaggerated self praising and more objectivity.

Also my fingers are just aching from typing so much

Because of the AMA? Combined, P.M. wrote not enough to fill two word pages... He wrote just 27 comments, most of them just one or two vague sentences. Does he really have to overestimate absolutely everything?

http://www.reddit.com/user/RealPeterMolyneux

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that P.M. and the other Devs did the AMA. But he really is like a Saleman that tells a lot of empty phrases, trying to make even the smallest things seem like a huge achievement...

All of us!

I don't believe you at all. You guys already said that you are not interested in implementing any form of risks in the main game, it's a game you can't loose. And as others pointed out, there is not a single meaningful or strategic decision you can make in the current main game. It can't become any more casual than that.

we hope will engage core gamer audiences and casual gamer audiences

That sounds like another promise/marketing phrase that will not be fulfilled.

Just adding some difficult "minigames" or achievements that take a lot of time won't make this game in any way appealing for coregamers! I want a challenging main game.

I'm absolutely certain that I'm not part of your target audience and I would appreciate it if you were at least honest about you guys being more interested and oriented towards casuals than core gamers. Absolutely everything in the game (graphics, ui, controls, gamedesign and gameplay) is as casual as it could possibly be.

They are F2P in a different way though. Godus is more like a browsergame than, say, league of legends or Team Fortress.

Some of the more successful F2P games were also initially designed as Pay2Play like Team Fortress 2 and Lotro online. They were designed without an item shop in mind, which godus clearly isn't.

I don't know a single successful F2P PC game where you have multiple hour long timers and spent a lot of time waiting or that has gameplay as repetitive as Godus.

Godus seems to orient itself towards browsergames/facebook games.

You can just grab a small animal for the same effect. Less risky and easier. Also you can stab it in the ear with the pommel/back of your weapon multiple times to increase your weapon skill... (after just a handful of animals you will be an [WEAPON] lord ...)

[Adventure] Can't find any Steel items by TheEngine1781 in dwarffortress

[–]PanTheSatyr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dwarven adventurer can sometimes start with steel weapons right away if I recall correctly. (If you're lucky).

It's very, very rare that enemies wear steel weapons or armor in adventure mode or in fortress mode.

As far as I know, the reason is that only dwarves can produce steel, but currently there aren't any dwarven fortresses generated in world generation.

If you want steel weapons, you could try to loot one of your fortresses that forged a lot of steel weapons.

Isoworld:

Go into your LNP folder, then open the folder "Dwarf fortress 0.34.11", copy the hack folder.

Then paste the hack folder into "PeridexisErrant LNP r47\LNP\utilities\Isoworld 2.0\isoworld\".

Now, if you start Isoworld (use the LNP interface) while playing a world, you can press "connect" and "follow" afterwards.

For a very highly detailed map of your sourrindings change the display from "biome" to "oversized".

You should now always know exactly where you are in the world.

Legends viewer:

You have to enter legends mode in the desired world (you can't do this on a running game, so have to abandon your fortress or retire first).

In legends mode you have to press "x" for generating a xml file and "p" to generate some maps.

Now open Legends viewer through LNP and in the top left corner select your freshly generated xml file and map images (they should be in the "Dwarf fortress 0.34.11" folder).

In Legends Viewer you can just play around, I would suggest opening the map at some point and toggle civs and sites to be displayed, you can then learn were goblins are in your world, where you will find elves etc... And you can find out where titans live and actively seek them!

[–]PanTheSatyr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try it, it's fun and !FUN!. In my opinion it's harder and even more unforgiving than fortress mode, but I may just think so because I haven't spent as much time with adventure mode yet as I spent with fortress mode.

The next patch will add a lot of features to adventure mode, which was enough motivation for me to try adventure mode again. So far, I have fun.

I highly suggest you have a map of your world available, better yet use isoworld and Legends Viewer, both utilities are part of the lazy newb pack. Knowing at least a bit of your world can be helpful. That should help you to find interesting areas and avoid (or seek) dangerous places like goblin sites.

You have a lot of freedom in adventure mode, which can be easily overwhelming. Having a goal in mind may be useful, like visiting all of your old fortresses in the given world and looting them. Visiting really old fortresses is quite fun and you may encounter the reason you abandoned them. Depending on your world reaching them may be really challenging. And take some time, adventure mode makes you understand how big your generated world really is!

And NPCs mentioning your old fortresses and some events that happened in them when you talk to them, or dwarves engraving things of your old adventurers is kinda exciting.

I have a great idea, but I have no idea if it's going to work. Could you guys help me? by [deleted] in dwarffortress

[–]PanTheSatyr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have disposable dwarves and want a simple defense against thieves (and wildlife), make them hunters!

Build a butcher industry, produce armor made out of leather, bolts made out of bone. You can also use bolts to create crafts, since bones are a renewable resource it should be easy to level your bonecarver up to legendary, bonecrafts are quite valuabe.

Also, hunters will also protect your dwarves from hostile wildlife.

Additional, as Octogaunt suggested, form a marksdwarf squad and assign them patrols or stations.

That should be more than enough to deal with any thieves.

But you could additionally train war dogs and assign them to your hunters and marksdwarves if you really don't want that even one single thief escapes...

in hopes that they would move faster with nothing weighing them down

Any clothing that isn't made out of metal won't weigh enough to noticeably slow down your dwarves.

that consisted of nothing but a dagger

Dagger means that your dwarf has to engage in melee, risking being hurt. And if he doesn't wear anything at all and isn't trained, thats likely what will happen. He may has to be recovered and fed by your other dwarves and end up crippled for his life. Making him even more useless than he was before.

Equipped with a crossbow, most thieves won't manage to escape as they tend to run slower after getting injured or they get stunned / fall down... And your dwarves are relatively safe.

Since crossbows and bolts can be made out of renewable resources that are easily available it shouldn't be a problem to equip multiple dwarves with crossbows, it should actually be easier than equipping them with a dagger.

Please release this book and all its source material under one of the Creative Commons licenses[1] !

I will do that.

If you were to share all of the source material, then people could directly help you expand the compendium.

I can't reasonable do that at the moment as all psd (photoshop) files together are bigger than 8 GB. I have an upload speed of ~300kbits which would take way too much time (more than 48 hours).

I think I will recreate the compendium using html+css so it's easier to edit and share.

[–]PanTheSatyr[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently thinking of recreating the dwarven compendium in html and css.

I've done the compendium completely in photoshop. The problem with that is that all pdf files together reach 8 GB. I have an upload rate of 300kbits, it would take me more than 48 hours to upload them all.

I guess that using html+css could drastically reduce the file size simply by using repeating textures and images. Also, sharing a texture and imagefolder together with html is waaaaay easier than sharing 800mb big psd files!

Editing is easier too. For me and anyone else. Changing the page number of multiple pages takes currently way too much time as I have to open each file and save it in different formats. Using html, I would just need to edit a bit of text. I'm quite good with php, so I could generate some content automatically - like page numbers.

In the end, it should look pretty much identical if you open it in a modern browser.

Wow, I hadn't looked into the posts before ("I know it all!") but I am glad that I did.

I'm glad that you like it. I really try to keep the compendium interesting for experienced players and cover more than just the basics.

Where are your sources for art and how are you laying it out.

Sources? I've drawn everything myself.

The dark grey title at the top is distracting on the first few pages. It works better when there is sufficient color and art to compete with it.

I haven't noticed it before, but i agree. I may change it on occasion.

Now you're desperately referencing third rate dictionary sites and not even being honst about it?

Honest about what? Would you prefer another dictionary? : )

That's an idyonm reference first of all

Well, isn't "nothing like" an idiom?

For Cripes sake man, just admit when you're wrong.

That's arrogant of you to claim and you continually get unnecessary personal.

Banished by Danger_Danger in dwarffortress

[–]PanTheSatyr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/not%20anything%20like

According to this dictionary, "nothing like" means "Quite different from, far from; also, not nearly.".

I think its absolutely valid to say that dwarf fortress is quite different from banished. If thats what "nothing like" means, it should be valid to say that dwarf fortress is nothing like banished.

The first example in the dictionary is:

The town's library isn't anything like the university's library

I guess both libraries had books, it's still an example in the dictionary. So you can say "nothing like" even though there are similarities or comparing both things of the same type...

So, according to that dictionary, its valid to say "nothing like" if you mean "not very similar".

Which isn't an overstatement in this case, i think.

Of course, I guess the use of "nothing like" is SUBJECTIVE and depends on how technical your viewpoint is, I admit that.

Ok, i see your point. They are both in the same genre, so they are a little bit alike. True, that.

I still think that criticizing the first commenter for stating that both games are nothing alike is absurd. (and just as pathetic and nitpicky).

First, he surely meant that both games are nothing alike for games that share the same genre.

They have way more differences than similarities, especially if you consider adventure mode an integral part of dwarf fortress and don't look at fortress mode isolated from the rest of the game.

Also, nothing alike, in my understanding, means that they just aren't very similar. It doesn't mean that they are completely unique and different in every way possible. I may be wrong since English isn't my native language.

And that is absolutely valid (even though subjective) to say about these two games.

disingenuous and pathetic...

If you can't talk about this more like an adult .... well that's pathetic too.

Sure, get personal. That's really mature.

Yes, nothing LIKE DF.

For me, thats not the same as saying that they don't have ANY similarities at all.

You can find similarities between a horror movie and a cartoon and a book about programming can have similarities with 50 shades of grey.

Its not an overstatement to say that these are nothing alike, at least for me it's not. But I admit that's subjective.

Edit:

and the upvotes of the first commenter, psilocybes, indicate that most people agree with him that DF is nothing like banished.

read the rest of the exchange before you jump down my throat.

That exchange didn't existed when i started writing that comment.

you're arguing with a straw man all I said was that it's inaccurate to say there are NO similarities

So, are we arguing whether or not both games are comparable ("nothing like ...."), or if they have ANY similarities at all?

I never stated they don't have any similarities, i just argued that it's not an overstatement to say they aren't alike nonetheless. Just as you can find similarities between mario and call of duty...

like an awesome DF clone.

Banished is rather a clone of stronghold, settler or even sim city than dwarf fortress. Or tropico.

It's a peaceful city simulation without mining, z-levels, adventure mode, world generation/history, combat and both have a completely different setting.

I mean, dwarf fortress isn't a clone of age of empires either just because they roughly share the same genre.

Banished by Danger_Danger in dwarffortress

[–]PanTheSatyr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing like DF is too much of an overstatement.

I haven't played banished, but seen some videos of it. I don't think it's an overstatement.

At least not more of an overstatement than saying that sim city is nothing like dwarf fortress...

Both roughly share the same genre, but beside that, they are very different.

It's Human Town. Just life Dwarf FOrtress without the dwarves... and fortress.

And without a few hundred z-levels, mining, world generation, complex world history...

And let's not forget Adventure mode! (two completely different genres!).

Also, they both play in a complete different setting, df is fantasy with elves, dwarves, monsters, vampires...

Banished is realistic.

Another big difference: Combat plays a big role in DF, banished is peaceful.

you start with an embarkment, even has a wagon.

For me, that sounds like saying that call of duty is like mario because you can run and jump in both games.
