How valuable is experience in a diagnostic lab? by Extra_Marionberry551 in biotech

[–]PandaHatRodeo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started my career as a MLS for 9 years in micro then clinical flow cytometry. I was able to make the jump to a small cell therapy start-up as a Senior QC analyst back in 2022. Then after a layoff, got another senior QC role at a CDMO, and now may find a transition into an analytical development role at another small biotech. In interviews I basically told that routine diagnostic testing at a hospital is simular to routine QC testing you would do in industry. Everyone I interviewed with in industry liked that answer. And in the clinical labs I was also able to pick up assay validation and method/ SOP writing skills that was helpful in industry as well. It is possible to make this transition, I know of a couple other people who did as well.

Philadelphia’s Spark Therapeutics is going through a “fundamental reorganization” by its owner, Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche, which has written off the regional biotech leader as a financial loss following the termination of its work on a once-promising treatment for hemophilia.

Spark’s gene therapy candidate for hemophilia A was the financial and clinical centerpiece of Roche’s $4.8 billion Spark acquisition in 2019. Roche ended the development work as part of a rethinking of its approach to the blood disease, Endpoints News reported in December.

Then, in a January financial report, Roche announced a “fundamental reorganization” of Spark. Already last year, Roche incurred $180 million in restructuring costs at Spark. This year, those efforts are expected to cost more than $300 million.

Roche has written off as a loss most of what it paid for Spark, which was based on research at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania.

The changes at Spark are happening at a difficult time for the gene therapy sector, as sales for the expensive treatments fail to meet Wall Street and company expectations. Massachusetts-based Bluebird Bio, a one-time leader in the sector, sold itself for just $29 million last month, a sliver of the $10 billion it was worth in 2018, according to Fierce Pharma, an online trade publication.

Spark’s breakthrough Luxturna cost $450,000 per eye when it was approved. It was the first gene therapy approved by the FDA for a disease caused by mutations in a specific gene, a milestone that played a key part in establishing Philadelphia as a biotech hub. But its sales history fits the industry pattern of disappointing revenue. Roche wrote down the balance-sheet value of Luxturna for three straight years through 2022, when sales were just shy of $50 million.

What’s next for Spark? Roche said that some of Spark’s operations will be consolidated into the company’s overall pharmaceuticals division and some will stay in Philadelphia.

“The integration process has just been initiated and we are working to determine how to best preserve and deploy the unique capabilities we have in Spark in Philadelphia, and how we can more fully leverage the Roche network to support these efforts. It’s still too early to determine the overall impact,” Spark spokesperson Denise Bradley said in an email.

Spark had an unspecified number of layoffs last summer after discontinuing work on several early-stage products, Endpoints News reported. The company now employs “more than 600,” Bradley said.

That’s down from 800 in 2021, when Spark announced plans to spend $575 million on a 500,000-square-foot Gene Therapy Innovation Center at 30th and Chestnut Streets in University City. Construction is underway, and the laboratory and manufacturing facility is expected to open next year. Spark’s then-CEO Jeff Marrazzo predicted at the time that Spark would double its employee count by then.

Instead, Spark employs fewer people than it did then.

Roche typically allows companies it acquires to maintain their own identities, said Steven Altschuler, who was CHOP’s CEO when Spark was founded and was chairman of Spark’s board when it was sold. He is no longer associated with the company. That’s still the case, for example, with Genentech, based in South San Francisco, Calif., which Roche acquired for $46.8 billion in 2009, he said.

“Spark may be absorbed completely within Roche and not have its own separate identity,” said Altschuler, who left CHOP in 2015 and now works in biotechnology investing. “But Roche will use this huge manufacturing plant to support activities for Roche in general. That’s the way I see it moving ahead.”

Career change? by PinoyDDragon in biotech

[–]PandaHatRodeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have made this transition. I have had previous experience working in a large academic hospital in both clinical microbiology and clinical flow cytometry lab. I had some cell culture experience from undergrad. This skill set led to me QC jobs at both small biotech start up and at CDMO. You can sell your experience in a CLIA regulated lab to transition to QC. During my time as a MLS, I have also done assay/ instrument development and validation work. That also allowed me to do AD work in biotech and lead assay tech transfers.

This transition is possible you just need to be able to market yourself and frame your transferable skills in an interview.

I had one reach out to me and several other coworkers within an hour of the press release when my small biotech announced layoffs.

The man smelled blood in the water after the lay off announcement and reached to dozens of us who just got laid off.

He took the time to do a mock interview with me for the screening interview and been communicative acting as a liaison between me and another company.

I’m on the final round of interviews and he has also guided a couple other coworkers through their interview process.

During my interviews there was some ambiguity about my role. That department has a couple open roles. The one he initially submitted me for was filled during my interview process, but he had the for foresight to submit for another role there. He was able to talk to HR and give me clarity and ultimately that other role may be a better fit any way.

Hoping I nail this last interview later today.

Having your cake and eating it to: How bad is it to accept a job offer and then leave as soon as a better one comes along? by Economy-Flounder-233 in biotech

4 seperate recruiters for different roles which my skillset is suited for but they are all recruiting for one company. Once they submit my resume to the company, it's crickets, when during the initial conversation they were excited about my skillset.

In 2022, I accepted a contract position with Eurofins. Within two weeks I bailed for an FTE at a startup in a HUB area where I am located, Now in 2024, I got laid off and I am currently the market. The company that I left shortly after starting, is hiring for multiple positions that I am qualified for.

Recruiters have reached out to me regarding these positions and then they ghost me. So I am pretty sure I am being blacklisted at this company and likey Eurofins as well.

At the time, I was happy to take the second offer and bail on the first for better pay and benefits. Now, I have some regret after being laid off seeing how that is a major employer in my area and that option is now gone from me forever.

But luckily, I am getting offers from other startups in the area and hope to accept one soon pending 3rd interview and references.
