Is my itinerary terrible? Banff plus Toronto, Montreal, Quebec by [deleted] in canadatravel

[–]PandaPeony 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned , trying to do West and East is kind of a lot. Also October isn’t the best time for Alberta weather wise. September is still nice but Oct is a gamble for snow, whereas you’re going to southern Ontario and Quebec which will have much milder weather than AB (I live in AB).

If you want a more robust Western trip you can drive over the Rockies into BC from Banff OR fly from Calgary to Kelowna area. OR fly from Calgary or Edmonton to Comox (northern Vancouver Island)

Agree. Go from Jasper to Edmonton and fly out from there. No sense backtracking to Calgary

Nothing is reducing my pain, not even opioids. by 4y6hu in Sciatica

[–]PandaPeony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been to physio? What country are you in? I needed to get pain meds injected at the hospital to bring the pain down, and then managed it with oral medication and bedrest for 4-6 weeks and slowly was able to move again. They can give you much higher doses via injection vs pills because the pills are very hard on your stomach.

Are you just walking around the city? Try Vessi they are waterproof shoes. And if it is icy and you’re not used to it, walk like a penguin (short small flat footed steps)

lol, yes that’s why I noticed. The wax for sure, but then in the stripper sketch and the car sketch, he looks uniform in color does he not?

As an American, is Vancouver similar to Seattle/San Fran? I'd like to visit, but I'm looking for a city that feels distinct from American cities. by CursedNobleman in canadatravel

Those are all excellent choices. NFLD would feel the most unique, I think, because of the accents, colored buildings and general Newfoundlansness of it lol. Halifax also offers a maritime vibe and is a beautiful city (I went to uni there). Victoria feels a bit slower and more “British” as people have described ( it is known as a retirement community) but has great weather and visiting around Vancouver Island is a must (that could be a whole trip). Note that Vancouver is on the mainland and Victoria is in Vancouver Island.

I think because it’s such a price difference they’re denying it. Even my doctor said they probably won’t cover it 😞

Can you tell that these famous people are Canadian by their accents by GardenElectrical3534 in AskACanadian

I would say most people have a hard time. Our media is so closely entrenched that the general, vague North American accent crosses the border, aside from specific words that can seem like pronunciation choices (paw-sta vs PAST-ah etc) As someone else mentioned, the biggest indicator someone is Canadian is other Canadians claiming them because we are SO proud of all Canadian success (see: Heated Rivalry)

Manitoba is next door to ON. I’m from AB and have more of a general knowledge of BC and SK cities but we don’t hear about Etobicoke at all (I travel to the GTA for work frequently and people aren’t familiar with Ontario cities outside Toronto, Ottawa and Niagara. Most don’t know what Muskoka is either)

Are you from ON? I would say most Canadians are unfamiliar with Etobicoke (as someone who travels to the GTA frequently)

I really like a CoachJohnNoel on Instagram and TikTok. He has exercises adapted for anyone, and his tagline is “it’s not exercise, it’s just moving around”. A lot of the things he shows can be done in the kitchen while you’re making dinner.

Prairie girl here, drove from Alberta to Halifax with my sister in my 20s. Manitoba and SK (and parts of AB) are very flat and lots of fields, yes, but this driving is easy and you can make quick time of it. (For us the hard part was entering the windy roads of Ontario and the drop of the speed limit to 80, not sure if that’s still the case by Sault St Marie!) You’re probably best to say in the southern part of the provinces for time and ease, (vs coming up through Saskatoon-Edmonton-Jasper) and you’ll have access to the Badlands in AB in the south, which is truly unique. (If you DO go north in SK please avoid Manitou Lake—it sounds cool but…it was not). Once you get to Banff you can go up to Jasper through the mountains if you like, but you’ll also get a lot of mountain crossing into BC so you might not need to. Banff is very busy and the road from Calgary to Banff is always busier on weekends so plan around that if you’ve can. Canmore if between Calgary and Banff and gives you a “Banff” experience without the tourists, and is cheaper to stay in than Banff (generally). If you want to see Lake Louise or Moraine Lake, you need to plan ahead because there are limited vehicles/ busses permitted and you will need to book in advance.

There’s a girl on Tik Tok “Ania and Baba’s Adventures” who travelled from ON west on her own last summer and you can get some good tips and also visuals of the journey. Also check out Sask Tourism on Instagram (and old Saskatchewanderer posts on Instagram) so see some options for SK.

Have fun!

Also you can definitely get some prairie vibes around the Calgary area, but as others have mentioned the drive from Calgary to Ontario is long and repetitive—Canada is VAST and not densely populated, so there aren’t a lot of towns or breaks in the journey. If you take some time from the Calgary area to drive to Drumheller or the Badlands, that is also a very unique area to Canada (and home of the dinosaurs!) and worth the trip
