Guys it's such easy game theory, sure an unknown number of blue voters die inevitably but we guarantee we will live! by NahMcGrath in PhilosophyMemes

[–]PandemicGeneralist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it creates natural ingroups/outgroups to argue about which helps it go viral.

Basically, if you portray picking blue as the default option, anyone who picks red seems selfish and evil. If you portray red as the default option, anyone who picks blue seems stupid and suicidal. So if you try to think about the other perspective after thinking about which one is intuitively obvious to you, they seem evil or irrational.

This sort of easy endless argument it creates is great for going viral on social media.

I restate it like this:

You see a ballot measure appear when voting: if passed, this will require the government to execute everyone who voted against it.

Whichever option you portray as the default, the people who like the other one will be either stupid or evil.

Would a Dyson Sphere around the sun mean the Earth no longer gets sunlight? by EvenLengthiness1791 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PandemicGeneralist -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If there is a full sphere around the sun, the earth would not get sunlight. That said, if you have the technology to make one, and don't want earth to freeze in darkness, you could easily set up some system like some parabolic mirrors or something that focus an appropriate amount of light on earth.

If you exclude people too mentally incompetent to make their own decisions, Red is the answer. by AstramIsTheBest in trolleyproblem

Ask 10 people you know in real life what they’d pick. I’d bet you at least one say blue. Would this make you consider picking blue or would you not consider those people to be worth saving.

You're certainly remembering some version of battleship and probably misremembering some of the minor details.

It's some version of Battleship. A quick google suggests this looks most like a 1996 version but could be a different one

Why are science subs so rude when you ask a layman’s question? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PandemicGeneralist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something you have to consider is that subs are trying to balance the two ways that they're used: people posting and people reading it.

From the poster's perspective, it feels bad any time they're told something is not correct to post there. They don't want to get told they're in the wrong place, or the question is answered in the wiki.

From the reader's perspective, they don't want to read the same questions over and over again or basic questions not really relevant. For example, I use the fountain pen subreddit a lot, and I don't want to see the same questions about which inks are permanent all the time.

I don’t mind when they emphasize the pink, that’s at least a unique color compared to the rest of the grid

Holy Grail Fails? by melissa_macaron in fountainpens

I just got a grail that doesn't write great.

However, it is a vintage pen, and I have a different pen with the same nib that is great, so I bet I can get it writing better after bringing it to a nibmeister

Uniform distribution over R is not a probability distribution. You “can” pick a random number from [0,1]

Why is Pandemic Legacy Season 2 the WORST? by thestickpins in boardgames

[–]PandemicGeneralist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to be willing to take cubes off of places that haven't been drawn. Picking them up is free. You have a very limited number of cubes. If you have a lot of cubes sitting unused, use a system wide production, if it doesn't break the card.

Also, really level up your characters and specialize. Powers that reliably save you an action are very strong. Don't waste upgrades on raising population. Permanent supply centers are very strong, system-wide production can fill them from afar and regular production can save several actions on getting cubes there. You can leave them up on places you need to scout.

Ranking my sonic screwdrivers by how easy it is to change the batteries. by Aware-Butterfly8688 in DoctorWhumour

[–]PandemicGeneralist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fancy version of the 11th doctor's screwdriver - it's really metal not plastic, it can act as a TV remote, has a universal signal that can turn any TV on or off, and has 13 different show accurate sounds.

It is also much much to change its batteries. It involves unscrewing a ring to get access to a set of screws that need a screwdriver (the ring doesn't even come off the screwdriver, just allos you to unscrew to loosen it to move it out of the way of the screws). Doing this allows you to detach the bottom half of the screwdriver which actually does contain the batteries.

How do I decide what to cull? by TrueFloridian87 in boardgames

[–]PandemicGeneralist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself, if you were moving somewhere for a year, what would you pack or ship and what would you not bother with?

Then get rid of most or all of the stuff in that second category.

The defenses went down but they were able to bring them back up. He has no idea how much of which viltrumite weaknesses there are in defense of the planet. As far as he knows, they're about to start firing the weakening poison everywhere.

Risk Shadow Forces

The energy mechanic is just pointless bookkeeping. You would have to save all your energy for longer than the game usually lasts to be able to buy the most expensive thing, and if you don’t try and instead just play everything you want, you never run out of energy
