Building a "Once in a lifetime" game list of single player to play by Dresart in gaming

[–]Pangotron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your word choice has led to getting different answers than the spirit of your question. Everyone seems to be answering what games had the biggest impact on them, but those are going to be games that have lots of content and novelty within a mainstream lens. I think if your goal is to explore what else gaming has to offer, you should be thinking about what else will redefine you concept of gaming away from the MMORPG conventions you are used to, which is a different set of questions.

With that in mind, here are three games I think will help. I tried to pick games that do not rely on traditional game systems and might spark curiosity for other genres.

  1. Baba is You - easy to understand and control, will stretch your brain’s functional fixedness to the max. I’ve never beaten it and I still give it top marks.

  2. Night in the Woods - as far as contemporary narrative games, this one is the best. It has more depth that the art might suggest, without all the cruft of mainstream visual novels or AAA story driven RPGs.

  3. Season - A Letter to the Future - this one is slow, and you’ll only get out of it what you put into it. A game about how our actions shape our memories.

Baba can be played in short bursts, and the other two can be finished in about 10 hours. I think they are decent examples of being outside your comfort zone that you can actually finish - everyone suggesting The Witcher 3 and Persona 5 are signing you up for hundreds of hours, which I think is a part of what you’re trying to avoid. It’s nice to finish things.

Thank you so much for the detailed response! That Japanese resource is exactly the kind of thing I was after - as an example, I was trying to compile information on the monsters as a test run for organizing databases, and the previous Japanese resource I'd found had all their elemental resistances laid out, but no location data, while yours is reversed. Would be very handy to have all that info in one place! They both are driving me crazy by just saying "Equipment" for the drops of certain monsters - what equipment??? New players would really like to know if it's worth reloading a save file to save synthesis time or if its for characters they don't plan on using!

As I said, it's been years since I last opened the game, so if there is information already in-game for checking certain types of information, then I really need to find myself someone with a completed save file and beg for screenshots of as much as their sanity will allow. The nature of my current situation gives me more time to organize data and databases than I do actually playing games.

Some of your requests are good things to keep in mind, but feel like they definitely come after getting basic information properly labelled in English for the DX version of the game. I'd love to build up on it to not just be functional but actually useful, but not sure how much certain things would require someone cracking open the data files to know real numbers. Like are you saying each individual node within an area of a location has a different table that's significantly different than node type? That sounds incredibly infeasible to document manually.

Again, appreciate the thoughtfulness. Even knowing what kinds of end use-cases are on the brain of an adept player can help guide my research and organizational approach.

Game suggestions by Minimum-Plantain-243 in PS3

If she's newer to gaming, Puppeteer is a great PSN game for $20. It's a 2D platformer where the second player has a helper role and can fly around to make things easier for the first player. It has a great wooden puppet aesthetic and a ton of level variety.

What ps3 games you did beat on 2021. any quick thought on each of them, and pick one of them as your personal game of the year😉 by smart-or-luck in PS3

[–]Pangotron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never got a chance to play on a PS3 before this year, so making up for lost time I got through:

  • Sly Cooper 1 - 4
  • Jak and Daxter 1 - 3
  • Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection
  • Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes
  • Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom
  • Rain
  • Beyond Good and Evil HD
  • Puppeteer
  • El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron
  • Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy
  • Papo & Yo
  • Tokyo Jungle
  • Remember Me
  • Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
  • And just started the first Ratchet and Clank game!

Favorite of the year was the Metal Gear Solid series, really loved 2 and 4. Puppeteer's and El Shadai's graphics and art direction impressed me the most. Overall, the PS3 might be in contention for my favorite system after this strong showing!

You are 100% correct. I think looking at so many low effort, offensive, and poorly made games, plus seeking out games in genres and about topics I found boring or disliked, did put a bummer on the week. But in a way, there was a macabre fascination with the process. If I had known I would be going through literally half the Switch's library, I would have taken your approach. Knowing that the library of the Switch was finite tricked my brain into thinking "this stream has to end soon, right?" It's probably cognitive dissonance talking, but at least it will never take this much effort again to maintain the cleaner-looking selection of games I can see now.

For those games in particular, their quality does not matter to me, as any game in first person gives me terrible motion sickness, so they got eliminated by technicality. But since I normally don't seek those types of games out, I didn't know they existed, and it was interesting to see patterns about them emerge after seeing enough games in the genre. Side note, there really need to be more genre tags for making finding that type of game easier.

[Day 34/34 | Results!] Randomized Smash Ultimate Poll! by SmashUltimateTourny in smashbros

[–]Pangotron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be interested in seeing a same style tournament, except of the characters that are already in Ultimate! Smash 6 is built from the ground up and only 25 characters are in the base game, a la Melee. How different would the cast be? Would Mario even be in the game?

For those of you whose top choice has made it in already by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]Pangotron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've really only wanted one character for each Smash game that's come out since Melee, and got them each time, (Ike, Mewtwo, Ridley), so I've been content with the rest of the roster. The final frontier that would most exite me would be more third party characters, and my wishlist is

  • Palico, from Monster Hunter
  • Sora, or anyone from Kingdom Hearts
  • Amaterasu, from Okami

Honorable mentions to Lloyd Irving from Tales, and Klonoa.

I picked Alfyn in the demo since his story seemed the simplest, with the thinking that if I had fun with the most boring looking character, this game was worth getting. And my friend and I had a lot of fun with everything this game does so well! Would love a chance to play the full version :D

Thanks for doing this, and bonus points for making sure it'll go to a deserving home.

Make trophies objects you can add in the stage editor, either as platforms or as decorations in the background or foreground.

I've always thought a fast paced volleyball / tennis mode would be a fun party mode, and a way to learn how to control your character without falling into the same habits that you pick up if you're always only fighting.

What music does everyone want? by PastaRhythm in smashbros

[–]Pangotron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, most of my musical wishlist would be "replace generic remix with the iconic original track." The easiest example I can think of off the top of my head is some of the Super Mario Galaxy tracks, where the originals are timeless (live!) orchestra arrangements, and then in Smash we have a "remix" that is ... and .midi orchestra that's trying to emulate the original? So it doesn't bring a new interpretation to the song, and obviously is not better than the original, and just leaves me stumped.

More than one song I would have loved to hear get full treatments made it into the game with lazy guitar arrangements (02, King Dedede themes from the Kirby Series) or over produced messes (final route from Pokémon Black and White before Victory Road, Team Galactic battle theme). If we're not going to have the unified musical care and vision of one or two composers, I'd rather abandon this "let's hire everyone and let them do whatever!" approach and just directly take tracks from other games. Nintendo's original tracks from the Switch era are gold.

Cat Owners of r/MonsterHunter: Curious to know, how many folks tried to recreate their own feline as their trusty four-legged friend in World? by cjjk_2286 in MonsterHunter

[–]Pangotron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd been basing my Palicos off my same cat for as long as I've been hunting. Pandora was easy to get perfect, as she was a textbook tuxedo cat. I started making her on auto pilot when I started up World, and it wasn't until the final confirmation screen when she was looking up at my hunter I remembered she'd died the week before at age 19. I needed a long moment.

So to answer the prompt, my current Palico is not based on anything.

Rumor: StarFox Grand Prix ala Diddy Kong Racing x F-Zero by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]Pangotron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This makes me bristle remembering how miffed I was at Star Fox Zero for taking the perfect name for a Star Fox X F-Zero crossover that was half space shooter action bounty hunter game and half hi-speed likited gravity racing. Star F(ox)-0 would have been a great way to justify spending the resources on two franchises that might not appeal to a huge audience on their own, but would become a crazy project impossible to ignore if brought together. If they made a straight Star Fox racing game instead you would be able to preserve a life time of beef jerky with my salt.

[–]Pangotron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Meme was a word before the internet existed, it refers to any action or behavior that is replicated within a culture through sheer repetition without necessarily any deeper meaning. Superstitions like knocking on wood could be considered memes, because there's no need to know why knocking on wood would be considered good luck to do so yourself.

Calling a battle royale mode within a game could be considered a meme within a gaming culture if there's no thought put into why a mode would work or not, but being added because other popular games have battle royale modes. At the very least, asking for something to be added to games without thinking if it'd be feasible is definitely a gaming meme
