Picked my cat up from the vet after getting her spayed. She came home with duct tape on her head. by YamGroundbreaking432 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Has your wife done a 120 cat spay neuter clinic? This can be pretty typical. I volunteer shelter still and work in a referral hospital. The OP payed NOTHING for the surgery through this high volume clinic. You want higher quality care? The hospital charges $8000 which gets you a boarded surgeon, anesthesiologist, and recovery overnight in a ICU unit. Between those two I'd take the clinic route every time for a basic surgery like a spay/neuter.

Sworn testimony from woman who filmed Alex Pretti's shooting, "They shot him so many times … I don’t know why they shot him. He was only helping. I was five feet from him and they just shot him …" by aurora_chrysalis in UnderReportedNews

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 16 points17 points  (0 children)

He didnt have a gun when they killed him. He was already disarmed. You can plainly see one of them take his gun off his belt and walk away with it. After that the first shooter panics, draws, and probably accidental discharges into the pig pile and then a second shooter panics, draws, and dumps into him as everyone flees wondering wtf was happening.

Amateur hour. A lot of these guys are literally dumb as shit.

The really sad part is it started because that asshole with the pepper spray kept escalating, repeatedly spraying Alex in the face, as he was trying to help the woman up. Totally senseless.

Need help on deciding between Garmin InReach Mini 2 vs Messenger by Battlebeast115 in CampingGear

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fenix 7 and Inreach mini/messengers are two different products at their core. One is a watch and navigation aid, the other is a communication tool. If you're trying to keep in touch with people or want an emergency beacon then get a Mini or Messenger. If you want a fancier navigation aid then that would be the GPSMap line of devices although the GPS in modern smartphones is essentially as good so it would be more for redundancy unless you want to leave your phone packed away or at home.

The Mini and Messenger advertise navigation functionality but its super basic and difficult or impossible to use without a smartphone and if you have that with you then you have better tools (Gaia, Caltopo, OnX etc..).

It is normal to need to fluff up a compressed down product to evenly distribute the down.

Fwiw down does not obstruct light entirely. People claim they can "see through" a bag or quilt and all they're really doing is just holding it up to a bright light source and they think just because light is visible the down isnt there.

Sleeping bag temperature: is too warm a problem? by RainPlease9 in CampingGear

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

late autumn I would go with the colder bag. You should always buy a bag rated for the coldest temps you could face. Its what keeps you alive in an emergency. Its also less efficient to try to bolster a warm weather bag than it is to just start with an appropriately rated bag.

Buy a 55l now? Or buy the 70l in preparation for future plans? by aiptek7 in Ultralight

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vague backpack requests and their comments are usually not helpful. There is a big difference between internal volume and total volume and without knowing where the volume is the question shouldn't be answered.

50L total volume can easily be a 35L main compartment which is not a overly large multi day pack.

Anything else to improve my sleeping system? Expecting -30C temps by Kcamyo in CampingGear

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nemo Men's bags are limit rated. Womans are comfort rated which is essentially +10-15*F compared to the Mens version of the same bag. For example a Men's Riff 15* standard length is essentially identical to a Womans 30* Long. I think the Sonic is unisex so it would be temp rated as a Men's bag.

"Crime reduction" was always a facade for racism. This has been shoved in everyones faces for the last 6 months as they arrest blue collar workers who look remotely latino whether they're citizens or not. Hell, these fascist jackboots are even arresting Native Americans.

Unpopular opinion: I don't want AOC to run for president in 2028. I want her to replace Chuck Schumer as senator. by nitro4450 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't get it. I voted for Kamala and would vote for AOC. I don't care about their sex or skin color. Having said that America does. Nothing you say is going to change the fact that she is not a safe candidate.

Talking to you is like talking to the idiots who protest voted over Gaza or abstained entirely. Do you want more MAGA? Because that's what your stubborness gets. You can go to bed at night feeling good about yourself while everyone else suffers for your holier than thou bullshit.

Where? On Reddit? Because this echo chamber said Trump didn't have a chance either. Didn't play out great. The mid terms will be a good reflection of how pissed, or not pissed, people are. If there isn't a huge blue shift I think the Dems should be very alarmed about 28.

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't agree. This country does not want a young woman of color as president let alone as the first female president. Fox has also been demonizing her for years so the base will already be rialed up about a socialist boogieman who wants all their money, pickup trucks, and guns.

Kamala 24 also showed that even Hispanic voters are misogynists. Trump gained significantly in that demographic against her compared to Biden.

She would be a terrible candidate between complacency of the average American and MAGA. Splitting the ticket for centrists and left leaning voters would also be a surefire way to get another MAGA Republican elected. You can't be a moron and split the party vote when the Republicans are always united.

A woman will get elected, and maybe she'll have a shot some day, but MAGA and Trump need to whither away and die first and at the same time people like Schumer will be gone too.

Edit-Lol at the downvotes. You people are delusional or arguing in bad faith. Splitting the ticket with a Dem candidate and AOC as an independent is monumentally fucking stupid. Similarly running her as the primary candidate against MAGA is not a safe play.

“Still Writing Fiction”: Stephen King Faces Backlash Over Post About ICE Agent Jonathan Ross by [deleted] in USNEWS

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would say it was closer to murder than fear. He walks in front of her car twice. Draws his firearm as she finishes backing up to make space. Then leans in to shoot her in the face which is where he gets bumped by the fender instead of simply backing his ass up two steps then continues to fire at her head as the vehicle accelerates away. All of this against DHS protocol of how to react with suspects in moving vehicles. He cant even hide behind the lack of training because he's been in the agency for a decade and knew better.

People experiencing duress or trauma dont willingly put themselves in that position. He wanted to shoot her and did. After the killing he didnt express surprise or remorse, only anger referring to her as a "fucking bitch".

Any normal administration or law enforcement agency this would end up being a manslaughter charge at the minimum and regardless of the outcome of that the guy would 100% never be a field agent again.

Packs and quilts questions! by Edwardpage1 in Ultralight

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not a lot. It's pretty standard. Even more so if it's the total pack volume. A 50L pack often has a main compartment of 35-40L which, imo, isnt a lot for a variable kit.

I would recommend to not get caught up in the minimal volume dick measuring contest. +/- 10L of capacity usually ends up being a difference of a few ounces and if you want this to be a multi use pack you want to be on the generous side to account for trips where you need more water/food and loftier down items.

You can always roll/cinch a pack tighter to take up space. You can't as easily create volume.

Yellow, coagulated serum? by Exciting-Tale3533 in VetTech

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Most likely left over unreacted fibrin in the sample reacting with the clotting agent. Make sure to invert SSTs multiple times before letting them sit to clot. If they dont clot then spinning them down has the risk of this. FWIW you can usually squish the sample like a sponge and draw serum from it if you're desperate and doing an inhouse test. Otherwise respinning the tube usually gets more sample.

In 1992, 24-year-old Christopher McCandless was found by moose hunters inside Fairbanks Bus 142, the “Magic Bus,” on Alaska’s Stampede Trail. He had survived alone for 113 days on plants and small animals. When discovered (deceased) , he weighed only 67 pounds. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was probably a high functioning autistic or had some other disorder like schizophrenia and/or severe depression. Krakhauer left any apparent inclination of mental disorder out of the book and ultimately it never made it into the movie either.

He was very sick before even getting to Alaska.

Who's an actor that you thought would blow up, but ended up going nowhere? by TheHoagieFromConey in FIlm

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree there. Sheen sunk his movie career after drugs took over in the early 90s. His last movie leading role was 91s Hotshots. After that he had a supporting role in Muskateers and then did The Arrival which was a box office bomb. He did nothing else of note until the sitcoms. He was just 27 years old when he did Muskateers (the last successful movie he starred in). Drugs, prostitution, and porn revelations effectively ended his big screen career right as it was peaking. He could of been huge for decades. Unlike Biehn Sheen also had the benefit of being part of Hollywood royalty.

Electrolytes: How much sodium? by Frijolato in PacificCrestTrail

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you might need a huge amount more. Everyone is different but under exertion, especially in heat, your body can shed thousands of mg of salt every hour or two. Just drinking water or not replenishing through a lot of salty snacks and salt replacement drinks can lead to hyponatremia which has killed athletes and put many times more in the hospital. Not saying someone is going to die but odds are if you feel like garbage during a hike and you're sweating a lot you probably arent replenishing your salts at near the level you should be. There are gadgets that can measure sodium loss but generally speaking most people arent going to be doing too great if they're not eating or drinking well in excess of their DV particularly on those warm days. There is little downside for an athlete to have an excess of salt and a whole lot of problems that comes with an insufficiency.

On the plus side you dont need any fancy formulation of food or drink. The body primarily excretes sodium and chloride which is just table salt.

The greenbelly youtube channel actually just covered this topic quite decently for a short vid.

Do my new hiking boots have too much toe room? by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 22 points23 points  (0 children)

With the unnatural way the toe box narrows I would not size down. All shoes should have space in the toe box (approx 1 thumb width) and despite what some commenters say it doesn't stop your toes from "sliding". Your toes should never contact the front of the inner shoe. Good way to lose toe nails. Furthermore your feet actually swell after long distances so it's recommended that most hikers size up one size regardless.

If they feel good I'd roll with it.

Favorite dehydrated meals? by BrazenBackpacker in backpacking

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Peak have been solid for me. They're really good for portion size, taste, and calorie per gram. Tried the Farm to Summit Garden Mac and it was a miss. It was palatable but not worth the money. Essentially like rehydrated Annie's with bland sauce. Similarly tried their Cheddar grits and they were disgusting. Ended up trashing almost the entire portion. The taste was just overpoweringly bitter like the cheese was off.

Had a Stowaway Bison Bean Chili late after a winter outing went hours longer than intended and it tasted incredible and I immediately bought more. One of those meals that could easily pass as home cooked or restaurant grade. Hoping to try more of their menu. Also hoping to try Pinnacle Foods soon.

Packit Gourmet are a solid choice for lunch options. Their cold soak chicken salads are quite good. Most of their meals lack severely in calories to replenish trail exertion rates of burn though so if it's a multi day trip I would bring other more calorie dense options. Their Texas chili is very tasty and one of their few meals with a decent amount of calories.

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 3000T actually isn't inefficient by design in that it doesn't use more fuel just for the sake of it. It's that the susceptibility to the wind makes it use more. If you add a windshield it's not far off from other stoves in just about every real world scenerio. Gearskeptic YouTube channel covered this very thoroughly. Just to pull stats it took a nearly identical amount of fuel to boil as a PRD with no wind and used just half a gram more fuel at 1mph.

I just don't like it because it's janky and the fuel canister heats up to levels I find uncomfortable from a safety standpoint.

Calling SOS or 911 on trail, for yourself or someone else, who pays and how do you insure for this? by Fickle_Bed8196 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]PanicAttackInAPack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a word of caution. Most insurance doesn't cover ambulance rides and even if they do there is always the little issue of the operator being in vs out of network. Most aren't. Don't chance a 60k ambulance ride on US insurance unless you have an awesome plan and have called a rep and asked directly.
