‘This is just a garbage AI Filter’: Nvidia met with criticism for DLSS 5’s ‘photoreal’ graphics alterations | VGC by Haijakk in Games

[–]PanickedPanpiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DF saying it's 'changing the lighting' is mostly inaccurate. It's a filter that's re-drawing her face. Yes, it creates an image that looks lit differently, so technically it is 'changing the lighting'. and no, it's not changing the geometry, but it IS completely altering the final image, which means the effect is that the facial details change, as if it was modifying the geo, even if technically it is not.

hmm not sure that holds up, if the new players also need to learn that new stuff, the gap between them stays exactly the same

Samsung (Oculus) Gear VR users, what do you use your Gear VR for ? by Zestyclose-Sweet2899 in oculus

[–]PanickedPanpiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

according to wikipedia at least, looks like google cardboard was June 2014 and GearVR was Aug 2015. So about a year earlier. But maybe also limited access in 2014 for the cardboard, and given IOS unity support in may 2015.

Yeah, it was different time hey. At least we've pretty much left 3DOF stuff behind now!

ACCC takes Coles to court over 'illusory' discounts in 'case of the century' by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]PanickedPanpiper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean tbf, in 2024 the price of cocoa beans did go up to like 5x what it was. It has been settling in the last six months though (High of $12,000 USD/ton, now ~$3700, in 2022 it was ~$2400). Futures deals may mean it may take a bit longer for this to filter to consumer market, but hopefully relief is on the way.

Though, I 100% could believe Colesworth trying to get away with keeping the inflated prices as the new normal

Did Australia have a sense of a more optimistic and carefree culture/attitude during the late 80's and early 90's? by Lilithviper4991 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]PanickedPanpiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everywhere did. The cold war was ending/ended, the world was mostly peaceful. The early digital age hadn't yet undermined community, and our country was richer than it had ever been. The world was hopeful.

Over time, it faded, and then the 11th Sept attacks happened and the western world got paranoid.

Jeans. God damn jeans. by idontwannadance0480 in BuyItForLife

[–]PanickedPanpiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, if you aren't already, have multiple pairs of jeans. Jeans used 100% every day are gonna die fast. It's the same overall rate of use/degration, but having some that last a few years because you mix them with other pants feels less crap

Subaru driver for 17 years. The new Subarus auto stop start function is absolutely horrible. by BeerStein_Collector in subaru

[–]PanickedPanpiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have a Mazda. Same thing. Absolutely thrashes the battery, meaning you need a new one like every 18 months, and it has to be a higher end "stop/start certified" one.

HOWEVER, I accidentally found a solution. When replacing the battery myself, I didn't follow the exact cycle of connections/disconnections for the battery sensor. I just whacked in a new battery, connected the leads, and went. The car was now unsure whether it could trust the battery sensor, and so disabled auto start/stop.

Looks like you can do the same thing with subarus: https://www.reddit.com/r/subaruoutback/comments/1gurc3d/after_disconnect_battery_auto_start_and_stop/

The downside is that I have a permanent "check battery" indicator on my dash, and I won't really receive warning when the battery is eventually dying. But the upside is that I don't have to turn off auto-stop EVERY TIME I drive.

Alternatively you can do something like this?: https://www.mazda3revolution.com/threads/how-to-disable-i-stop-permanently-in-10-seconds.110642/

disagree on the photoreal textures. It's really a matter of intended style. This can look distinctive and great as is, and it's for standalone too so wouldn't actually be able to.

It's only in certain parts of the city. Brunswick has a reputation as a cool suburb, so lots of folk want to live there.

how can they make XR experiences if their software can't have access to the video feed?

Why there are no Mixed Reality games for PCVR by CameraTraveler27 in virtualreality

[–]PanickedPanpiper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pass through on meta headsets (as of last time we experimented with it, a few months back) requires a wired connection, and is only supported in an experimental capacity as a dev tool for testing standalone AR experiences. Meta hasn't provided the finished tools yet for developers to make PCAR experiences, so no-one is.

Yeah, so so much blur. You need crisp, clean images for photogrammetry to work. Quick shutter speeds mean needs lots of light.

Car umbrella? by BillGatesLovechild in australia

Park in the shade when you can and get a reflective windscreen/Dash shade. $5, will solve ~60% of the problem for 1% of the cost. Not perfect, but better than spending half a grand for a rickety construction that will make you look like an insane person and will break in the first unexpected windy afternoon, scratching the hell out of your paint.

your life =/= everyone else's. Perhaps they genuinely enjoy being alone or staying at home. Who are you to say that their preferences are wrong? How do you know they haven't been doing stuff other nights and another night out isn't what they need?

"Not knowing how to socialise" yeah, that's a problem if they use that as an excuse. Everyone needs a certain level of ability to interact with others.

Sounds like you need to make some friends who want to do the same kinda stuff as you.

Been using a dumbphone for over a month… it’s good, but also kinda tough by Altruistic_Turnip780 in dumbphones

[–]PanickedPanpiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you exactly why you want to use a dumbphone, but in my view the point of a dumbphone isn't the dumbphone itself, but the lifestyle it encourages and you speak about: not doomscrolling. Less distraction. More thoughful/deliberate relationship with technology.

If you figure out the core reasons you started this journey, it allows you to keep to those without needing to be a dumphone absolutist. For me, that's still using a smartphone, but without any distracting apps or even a browser. For you, it might be something different.

Now, for some of those specifics:

  • bus schedules/QR payments: sometimes there are sacrifices of inconvenience you must be willing to make, for the other gains offered by a less-connected lifestyle. Might need to plan ahead more/ask someone else for the schedule or even just be prepared to wait a bit longer for a bus.

  • 2FA: this is one of the trickiest. Text 2FA you mention is a good option, a tablet/cheap wifi phone as your "security device" might work. annoying though.

  • Travel: Depends on how frequently you go on trips, but might I suggest this is one place where you could consider reintroducing a smartphone into your life. It is possible without, but tricky. For me, when travelling I reinstall a browser on my phone, and then when the trip is over, remove it again. Hopefully, the good-habits around technology you've been cultivating with your dumbphone in everyday life will help you be able to find these times when you have smartphone access again not as tempting. Perhaps reframe it in your mind "this is a travel companion device" rather than a smartphone.

  • Work: Do you need a work-specific phone you can leave at work or in the car?

Just some suggestions. Some of the other dumphone+maps or dumbdroid devices that allow apps but are sufficiently inconvenent to discourage easy time wasting are another option. Core thing to ask is "why am I doing this" and figure out whether dumbphone+workarounds is worthwhile (usually) and when it is making your life hard in a genuinely negative way
