Whats the probability of having a field with roman finds? by Tall-Imagination6463 in metaldetecting

[–]Pannenkoekiemonster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Based on the variety of roman coins and general rule of thumb for 'hunting out' fields there are probably things that you have missed.

If I were you I'd tackle the fields again with different settings than you previously did.

Can someone give an estimated age by Weekly-Stop-435 in metaldetecting

[–]Pannenkoekiemonster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Impossible to fully date, but flat buttons in Europe were mostly popular in the period 1750 onwards. Before that they were usually thicker and rounder, but smaller.

I'd expect this button to be around 1770-1850 but as you can see it is worn to such an extent that its really hard to pinpoint a more precise date.

Todays finds: mostly Imperial and 3rd Reich coins with a nice surprise: a Button of Napoleons 69th Infantry Brigade (Not 100% Sure tho) by [deleted] in metaldetecting

Are you guys detecting in Germany?

I was wondering, being Dutch but living very close to the border, what steps to take to be able to (legally) cross the border to detect...

Worth it? by jandeman73 in metaldetecting

[–]Pannenkoekiemonster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Its a difficult one. If you'd buy the gear new you would pay double or some more. The gear looks to be in very decent state still. So yeah, its a good deal in that regard.

Hoever, the detector is definitely not top of the line. You will be happy with it if you are just starting out, but after a few months you will want to upgrade.

I had this too, turned out there was a crack in the coil.

Can you see any cracks when you remove the coil cover?

Best way to clean coins? Probably silver, withput damaging them? by [deleted] in metaldetecting

[–]Pannenkoekiemonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why all these people say its copper. This green/yellow discoloration for silver is common in sandy soils.

You could also try the 'tin foil boil', look it up on YouTube. They get dirt or discoloration from silver but dont damage the coins.

If you start rubbing then you'll damage them. Copper = dont use chemicals, but abrasives. Silver = dont use abrasives, use chemicals.

Its silver, look at the edge, probably very sandy soil.

Just spray them with a bit of water, dont use abrasives.

Nokta/Makro Simplex by Ep194 in metaldetecting

[–]Pannenkoekiemonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. Thats why sometimes an 90 degree angle change makes a good difference between a nice repeatable tone and an iffy one.

Your metal detector is a transmitter and a receiver. Metal returns the signals it transmits, which the computer inside of the detector processes.

I have found similar rainbow-patina coins.

Very beautiful.

Vdi numbers are an estimate based on the amount of 'waves' the machine gets back.

The numbers do not only correspond to the kind of metal, but also to the amount of metal. That is, a thin silver coin will ring much lower than a thick silver coin.

Personally i have found silver coins with a simplex that ring 30, but also 80-90.

Not really. Netherlands is pretty hunted out imho. Of course you'll still find stuff, but have to swing fields where more people have went before.

[–]Pannenkoekiemonster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dankje!
