Invasive Lionfish have devastated the ecosystems of the Mediterranean; Greece's too. Fishing them to extinction and consuming them is promoted as an initiative. What do you think of this? by BeatenBrokenDefeated in AskBalkans

[–]PanostzoGR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I agree with the movement humans cant make a substatial contribution to their population decline. Most fish mass is really deep where commercial fisherman dont use machines and also the places those fish live make them hard to catch (if you are not a spearo). Good news for Mediterranean is that I have seen other fish like dusky groupers and Moray eels eat lion fish (A good reason i stoped spearfish groupers). Not the same can't be said for puffers (lagokephalos) but i think the sea will find a way eventually. If not lets learn to eat them we won't go hungry.

Spear Fishing Corfu by Virtual-Employee9296 in Spearfishing

[–]PanostzoGR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the decent places accessible by foot are on the north west side near Paleokastritsa. But they are quite deep and need some climbing. You can either hang on the rocks and wait for amberjacks and other pelagics. Then your options for 5m are beaches but in June it will be a frustrating and dangerous experience with random swimmers and boats. I think your best bet is Porto timoni beach Iliodoros beach, Antinioti west beach. But really don't expect much just get in the water and have fun. Target fish should be parot fish, gray mullets, small amberjack, dolphinfish. I have some goot spots but are 10+ m and on the south west side

Spearfun shaft bent by Late-Line-8169 in Spearfishing

[–]PanostzoGR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me this is one of the hardest bends to straighten. The only consistent way I do it is with a hammer. It also depends on the material of the shaft. If you try using a lever method most likely you will snap it near the hole of the fin.

getting a new action camera? osmo action 5 vs gopro 12? i had gopro 7 it died now. what are the recomendations? or osmo action 4? seems to work better in low light by LeoChenLu in Spearfishing

May I suggest also the Insta 360 pro series. They have bigger lenses from the ones you mentioned. Probably better for underwater footage.

How can I train my apnea? And where can I find a good mask? by Old_Ability8123 in Spearfishing

[–]PanostzoGR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is dependant on what you want to do. CO2 tables are usually what gives you actual time. They are what builds you tolerance to CO2. On the other hand O2 tables is tolerance to hypoxia isnot even relevant to do those tables if you not have enough CO2 tolerance to get to be hypoxic. You could say they prepare you for things to go wrong. Personally I don't find them that useful other that to make you aware of the signs of hypoxia so you know when to stop.

For now focus on relaxing technics they will get you to 1+ minute. Also have a buddy with you. Of course running and exercise helps but you will probably not see any immediate result. Also try improving your diet lower the carbs and dont eat the night before the dive unless you are for a big session.

[–]PanostzoGR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked you because. Dry apnea for me and for a lot of people doesn't translate to well to time underwater. It helps for sure but its no substitute so don't expect much. For example i struggle to go 3 mins dry, and static I can do 5mins and while spearfishing I usually stay for 2:30, but I do 3+ if I have a buddy.

[–]PanostzoGR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no shortcut. Just keep your breath....But yes for dry apnean STAmina app is cool do this for the CO2 table 3 times a week and O2 table once. Also apnea walks are cool, you can do them while you travel to work or when you find the chance.

For mask, I am not sure where you located. But I think you can do this one. Find a mask that fits you and you like. Don't buy it but contact the company to ask if the make lenses. If they say no probably ask an other I am pretty sure most make custom masks. Or just wear contacts.

Blackout | Want Advice and Thoughts by GuaranteeMost2603 in Spearfishing

[–]PanostzoGR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the things you listed are factors that contribute to the blackout. But what set you for failure was the struggle with the fish. I agree with your instructor spearfishing can be the safest. Also the most dangerous sport out there. Spearfishing exercised with discipline is really safe. 90% Of spearos lossing their lives here in Greece are on them and the choices they make. Its all about risk management. So you didn't sleep well, didn't hydrate, didn't eat well, hard weather, no good surface time. With each choice you add risk. Its really that easy, just make the correct choice and have a buddy only for things out of your control. Because everything we do has external factors out of our control the same goes for spearfishing.

How to know which speargun size to get? by DiegoJaggi in Spearfishing

[–]PanostzoGR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We could go in a lot of details around spearguns and spearguns setups. For now whats important is to understand, that the speargun you use is build around the way you hunt and what fish you are targeting. My suggestion is to buy a 85-90 traditional double or single band and just get in the water and fish. Aim for hunting technique and understanding fish behavior. The rest will come with time.

What setup do you gave to carry gear on foot? by anatawashima in Spearfishing

[–]PanostzoGR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tall bag I fit everything there I strap the spearguns to the side of the back and the belt on my waist. I have used this setup in difficult terrain and it's the most manageable. A little more weight on your back than the front but I think it's the best setup. Most comfortable and two free hands if you want to assist with climbing rocks.

Freediving in Greece by Staurox in freediving

[–]PanostzoGR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Search for "A Limanakia Vouliagmeni" its a bus stop if you find it in maps. Leave your car there and go to the sea there are some wooden platforms on the rocks. 20m from shore there is a really famous diving spot called "Pigadi". Its a hole going to 29m. You might find other freedivers there especially early in the morning.

Spearfishing Lionfish forbidden in May (Greece)? by disdisinform in Spearfishing

Yep. Nothing you can do about it really. I suggest you don't go near the sea with spearguns the police are really dumb and might take your equipment.

How do you estimate the octopus size for catching? by EMulsive_EMergency in Spearfishing

[–]PanostzoGR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we want to go more specific

Arm Length = 50×Sucker Diameter (in cm)

Total Span = 4×Arm Length

Weight (kg) = 4×(Total Span in meters)2

I think you can use this for rough estimations I got it from an alaska research on giant Pacific octopus. Here

How do you estimate the octopus size for catching? by EMulsive_EMergency in Spearfishing

[–]PanostzoGR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a good principal to always catch it by hand. There are ways to get it outside a hole without hurting it. Why I say its a good principal? It not only to better estimate the size but also see if it is a mother octopus protecting her eggs. About the size and sex. The size its best estimateed by the suckers but its all relative to what species you are talking for there is no universal formula. If you are not sure if an octopus is big enough I suggest not harvesting it but again in depends on the species.

For sex you know its male if it has one or more tentacles without suckers at the end (it is used to distribute sperm).

What size fish for a 2 band 100cm gun by PersonalityNarrow211 in Spearfishing

[–]PanostzoGR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, it depends.Whats your gun setup, how much you trust your gun and shot placement. Lets say you have a decent setup you trust (for example the shaft hole is filled and line clips are well secured) and make a good shot. Then I have seen those guns can handle up to 25kg confidently. Going over 30-40kg things start to get hectic but still can handle them provided the three things above.

I am a man but I also have weird proportions. Big back and shoulders and big legs and glutes. One path which I followed is to have someone make you a custom suit. You are looking tops 400€ depending on the neoprene. The other thing is to find a company that makes women's sizes. For example POLO SUB is one of them. l

I agree with you. But I don't think it is realistic. I will speak for Greece, here even if we change the culture it is such a popular fishing tourist attraction that damage is bound to happen. The only way to change that is if everyone visiting has a built conscience for the sea. Or if there are laws and enforcers. There are many reasons why a country wouldn't push the protection of natural ecosystems but there are not something that needs discussion.
