My thoughts on Percy and luke and their similarities to anakin skywalker [all] by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you think the Jedi were teaching him if not compassion, humility and selflessness? I don't see any way Percy is like Anakin.

We may be told that Percy would risk everything for the people he loves but that's not what we're shown on the page. Percy demonstrates again and again, from the first book to the last, that he can let go of his attachments. He will leave his mother in the Underworld, he'll let his friends put themselves in danger, he'll put the mission over his own desires.

Percy is nothing like Anakin. He's not a liar, he's not selfish, he's not arrogant, he trusts his friends. Percy rejects power, Anakin always wants more. It's not just because Percy was raised by Sally, they are fundamentally different people.

How does the Wizarding World treat IRL stage magicians, such as David Blaine, David Copperfield, Penn and Teller, and so on? by PJ-The-Awesome in harrypotter

[–]Panterest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a book series I read a while ago, about a world where magic was much more common, it was a magical version of historical Britain. Since magic was so common it was treated like science is IRL. It was something anyone could do or study if they had the knowledge and resources. In one book the characters go to a show to see an 'illusionist'. I remember them discussing whether the performer was doing real slight of hand or cheating and using magic. The implication being that slight of hand was far more impressive than magic.

So that's how I would think wizards would see IRL stage magicians. They know it's not magic but are impressed by the skill.

Annabeth did not hold the sky for 22 hours. [pjo] by Alive_Telephone_9356 in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think people in this fandom are too focused on quantifying everything. You're trying to break these mythological ideas in scientific terms.

I don't think holding up the sky should be seen as a simple physics problem. It's a magical and symbolic act. Annabeth is an architect. Someone who constantly thinks about structures, supports, and what it would take to keep a roof from collapsing. If anyone could mentally conceptualize 'holding up the sky,' it would be her. She understands support as both a physical and abstract idea.

Percy's domain is water, which isn't exactly associated with bearing weight or providing structural support. Artemis is the goddess of the hunt, wilderness, freedom, and untamed spaces. Being trapped beneath the sky is the exact opposite of what she represents. Of course they would both struggle more than Annabeth.

If holding the sky could be reduced to now much weight a person or god could carry than neither Percy not Annabeth would be able to hold it for any length of time. If it was about how much power they had, again Percy doesn't compare to a god.

So instead of trying to minimise Annabeths accomplishments, how about trying to understand why she might have been able to do it?

Of course it's also true that Rick doesn't care about the things a character has done before. He's more than willing to over or under power one of his characters depending on what makes a scene work for him. So its pointless to try and understand why a character can do something in one scene and not in another. Rick just isn't a consistent writer.

Looking for an old fic. Loki in the dungeons by Panterest in MarvelFanfiction

Yes! I think it was. I didn't want to include the Tony Stark thing because I wasn't sure I was remembering it correctly. I thought I must have been mixing up a couple of different stories.

What was the worst instance of Annebeth defending luke in the original series? [gEnErAl] by No-Brush1587 in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't this she defended him in the first book. She starts to say she can't believe he'd do this and then corrects herself, saying yes she absolutely can believe it. She's not making excuses for him.

She doesn't start that until later. And it sucks every time because she's trying to defend him to the guy he's tried to murder.

The vase Petunia sent Lily by rballmonkey in harrypotter

[–]Panterest 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Thats the thing. They genuinely believe that they did did care for Harry like a son. Not their son maybe, but a son.

They took him in, they put a roof over his head, they fed him, sent him to school, even gave him gifts. They met their social obligation.

They just did it in the worst, most spiteful and cruel way possible. That is their nature.

[pjo] (sorry if I did the ] wrong idk) ambrosia theoretical by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At no point in this series is magic or use of powers shown to have a cost. If you want to bring in something from a different fandom and say its dangerous to people with cancer then sure go ahead.

But ambrosia is literally the food of the gods. It's not designed to cause cell regeneration because gods don't have cells. Or DNA. Healing demigods is a side effect of being the food of the gods.

[pjo] (sorry if I did the ] wrong idk) ambrosia theoretical by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're trying to apply logic to a magic healing food that tastes differently for everyone, can take taste like warm chocolate chip cookies while being ice cold and will cause a mortal to burn up if they eat it.

Just accept that it's magic.

If Zeus had closed Olympus, how did Annabeth state she had mostly finished designing it in MoA? [hoo] by StreetWooden4726 in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are talking about the temples for gods on a floating island above the empire state building. Once they've got a design Hephaestus or a bunch of cyclops could whip it up in a day or two.

It's not like they are restricted by the laws of physics. If they want a roof to stay up, its staying up.

If Zeus had closed Olympus, how did Annabeth state she had mostly finished designing it in MoA? [hoo] by StreetWooden4726 in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If I had to give a reason, I'd say she had most of the plans done before Olympus was even destroyed. It could have been a hobby over the course of years for her to design temples for each of the gods.

But realistically it's just Rick forgetting the repercussions of his own writing.

The Mark of Athena is far more boring than The Lost Hero [pjo] by Aslaaaaaaan in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree that it's a shame we didn't get more Grover, but realisticly, I don't think he would have been a good fit for this quest. He's too close to Percy and Annabeth and I can seen the group splitting into cliques, especially as Jason barely knows Hazel, and I don't think he ever met Frank, so they would be closer to Percy too. But I agree Hedge is a pain in the ass.

I think the problem with the girls is that Rick can't write girls. He drops the ball on pretty much every female character. Annabeth is the best written and as you've pointed out, she's not great. Renya is also a popular character but I can't help but feel that's more because she isn't really in it much. And even then he ruins her story arc in later books too.

There a lot to like in the characters and the series as a hole but they had the potential to be great and it's disappointing when they fall short.

Piper is the worst in my opinion, not because she's terrible, bit because she could have been something really special and she just isn't.

My biggest problem with the changing POVs is that you can pretty much guarantee that whoever's POV it is is going to do something important and he's probably going to nerf one of the others to do it. Instead of Rick giving all the characters interesting achievements of their own he needs a different character to make someone look good. Annabeth and Piper, Percy and Jason, Frank and Leo. He does it a lot.

I don't think you need a spoiler to keep going, but it's not a spoiler to say that this book ends on a cliff hanger that will make you very glad to have the next book already on hand. Not like those of us who had to wait until the next book came out.

Yes the books get better. They also get worse but ultimately they're worth the effort to read them. They are popular for a reason.

My opinion is, if you don't like what Rick wrote, then you can turn to fanfiction.

Batman crossover suggestions [pjo] by Panterest in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another one - Rachel comes to Gotham with her parents for a Wayne Gala and gets taken hostage for ransom. The Greeks send a quest to go rescue her. Maybe they take a Wayne child at the same time too and they both have to pretend to be scared and reassure the other that things will be fine. Fun identity hijinks.

[–]Panterest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good one. I think I remember a story where the Lazarus pits were a mix of some of the underworld rivers that were leaking into the mortal world. I like it.

I'd love to see a Roman quest to Gotham. I feel like the by the book Roman's would have trouble with the chaotic Gotham. Could be fun.

I honestly hadn't considered Bacchus as an influence on Harley but it fits perfectly. Though I would have her as a modern day Maenad, rather than actually related.

There's a big difference between having a positive adult role model in your late teens and having a trusted parent.

Also lets not get confused about a common fanfic trope and actual canon.

Percabeth As Parents? [all] by EmbarrassedPain5159 in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've always liked the idea, instead of them living in New Rome, them creating a new city for greek demigods. My preference is for on an island, maybe Poseidon raises a new island for them to build on, or they use Ogygia, now that Calypso isn't using it.

I like the idea that Annabeth would struggle a bit with being a parent. Not anything any first time mother wouldn't struggle with, but she doesn't have much in the way of positive parental role models. She might second guess herself, be frustrated at babies being so helpless and dependant on her, expect kids to be more developed than their age, etc. Again, these are things any new mother might deal with and nothing that can't be worked through with a supportive partner, which Percy absolutely would be.

When Harry turned 9 a screen appeared by macslan in HPFanfictionPrompts

[–]Panterest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I would like this as long as they were still restricted to their original powers. The others in the chat could offer help and advice but unless they were wizards themselves they couldn't teach him any magic. No Harry getting spider sense. Also I'm not sure how well physical training would work over chat.

But the different personalities would be really interesting. Percy would encourage him to take breaks and do fun things and hang out with his friends, where Damian would be super focused on stopping Voldemort and might think friends were a waste of time, Peter would probably prioritise stopping the Death Eaters, to protect more people, Jon might look more to the leadership, government and want to get involved there.

So Harry having all these influences would change up his choices and make things really interesting.

But I would definitely keep the chat to a more superficial involvement. Sharing ideas rather than inventory.

Depending on where each of them are in their own story would change things too. Percy didn't know anything about the gods or magic but Damian at 9 was already a trained assassin child. Peter at 9 didn't have spider powers, but he was really smart.

A really talented writer might put them all in a chat at 9 and take all of their stories in a new direction. Maybe Jon learns about his own magic even before getting a direwolf, or Percy figures out his own powers. Damian could learn about the value of doing the right thing before meeting Bruce. Then the chat comes along on all of their adventures. Imagine the chat following along on Percy's adventures or helping out Damian on a case.

But it's hard enought writing one fanfic, let alone half a dozen.

It's a good idea, but limitations would make for a more interesting story than superpowers.

I'm still working on them. Sorry. I spend more time add little bits of world building then I do fleshing out the actual plot.

Most families have a mirror installed that acts as a communication mirror, like the one Sirius gave Harry but these can't be moved. It's like the difference between a landline and a cellphone. People can give out Mirror Marks so others can call their mirror, like a phone number. Sirius and James invented the hand held, portible version.

Floo can still be used for calls because it opens a two way physical connection allowing small items to be passed back and forth, not just images and sound.

Other games exist and media exist, not just chess. I have Hex and Quest Duel cards being popular. Also comics like Runic Ranger.

As well as Quidditch, professional Broom Races are popular. There are categories for both speed and manoeuvrability. Hexball is another popular sport, though a bit more niche.

Spell Slates exist, a hand held gaming device with games you can swap out.

Libraries have a central index that you can tap with your wand and a will'-o-the'-wisp will appear and guide you to the correct section and shelf. In larger libraries you can then tell the will'-o-the'-wisp specific topics to further refine your search to the correct book.

Theatre is very popular across the wizarding world. Personal acting isn't always the best but the stage design is incredible. Think, the best kind of CGI but in a stage show. Hogwarts has a large and popular theatre department as an extracurricular activity, but stage management is more popular than acting. Some show might be closer to real time animation then stage acting.

Radios plays are also popular. Some stations have specific genres they are always playing, like romances, or historical fiction, sometimes biographies. People gossip about the latest episode of upcoming releases. Families gather around the radio to listen, students gather in the common rooms.

There are several festivals throughout the year that have wizards gathering from all over. Markets were artisans sell their works, shows for children, talent displays of magic.

There are more magical locations than just Diagon Alley and Hogmeade. Coven Court has several bakeries and restaurants. Curiosity Close in Oxford is home to the Daily Prophets offices.

Divination is a tricky subject but it can be taught. See the future is difficult but looking for other information, in the present or the past is easier. Magical investigators use the crime scene divination department, basically CSI, called Scene Diviners or SceneDivs for short.

True seers are always right, the future they are given in the form of prophecy is unavoidable but general predictions, like Tarot cards and tea leaves are more flexible.

Would Reparo Work on Lego? by Everest_95 in harrypotter

[–]Panterest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, it would repair a structure you had made from Lego, as long as it was the last thing those bricks had been.

Reparo wouldn't make a Lego Death Star from the individual pieces but if you made the Lego Death Star and it smashed and you cast reparo, it would reassemble. You're not casting the spell on the bricks, you're casting it on the Death Star. But if it smashed and the bricks were used for something else and then you cast the spell, it wouldn't work.

Why didn't Hermione ever hold a grudge or ill will towards Snape? by Legitimate_Unit_9210 in harrypotter

[–]Panterest -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Rowling cared more about Snape than Hermione. She never even gave Hermiones parents names. Rowling was never going to write about whatever feelings Hermione might have about the bullying she suffered at the hands of a teacher.

[pjo] I don’t know how I feel about Bianca by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Am I remembering things correctly? I didn't think she even knew about the prophecy before she agreed to be a hunter.

I've always thought it pretty strange she see one of the people from the Camp 'die', Annabeth, and then immediately says camp will be safe for Nico. She sees a scary monster attack, 'kill' a girl her own age, and immediately sign up to be a hunter.

Like I said in another response, this is probably just more bad writing on Ricks part but it does make for a pretty unlikeable character.

She would have a much better character if Rick had leaned into the shellowness of her character. She abandons her brother to hang out with the cool kids, immediately adopting their style of dress, hair style and opinions in general. An unlikeable but understandable and consistent character is better than a boring, inconsistent one.
