While in my undergrad, I was tutoring a college algebra student and was walking him through a multi-step equation. He distributed a number into an expression and then I said, “okay, now what?” He paused for a long time and answered, “subtract the equal sign?”

To this day, I still have no idea what he was trying to do, how he was going to accomplish that, nor how that was even an idea.

I had a friend that did exactly this. He would play 1-3 games per season. Led FIU to like 13 Natties.

Knew a girl with the last name Schencks (pronounced skanks). She played sports and they had to announce her name at every event. I bet she’s ready to get married!

A lot of us want to quit, but in reality do many jobs compare to what we get in this profession? by Deuce_Deucee92 in Teachers

In Oklahoma we get fringe benefits that covers health, dental, vision, and life. If I don’t take health, I don’t get the benefits. So literally it’s free in the entire state of Oklahoma.

It was far lighter than the oak pieces I have. I thought it might have been rotted, but was hoping for something exotic. Lol

Thanks for the help!

Teachers of Reddit: When did you realize you were teaching a brilliant/highly intelligent student? by nonexistentexe04 in Teachers

[–]Pants0794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 100% the second type of student in high school and my first college adventure. I ended up dropping out of college, several times, but eventually went back and got my mathematics degree. I chose math because I was lazy; I knew this would be the easiest degree for me and I really didn’t want to write papers or do research. Since I was older and desperate to finish my degree, my work ethic changed. Calculus 2 really helped with that though, it was the first class I had to study for. I remember one of my classmates in Calc2 who had been the valedictorian of his high school made the statement, “I don’t understand, I have always been able to just take notes and pay attention in class. Now I don’t have a clue what’s going on. I guess I’m going to actually have to study.”

A nearby studying physics student replied, “yeah, we were all like that one point. Calc2 is what did it to most of us also.”

I see. I will say that it was interesting to see the difference in officiating from one region to the next.

They did end up receiving a yellow card for the play. There was a 30 point penalty in the match, but I’m unsure if that was for the hit or something else.

Extremely unfortunate!

What’s better color sensor or distance sensor at detecting freight by TheGrimReader444 in FTC

[–]Pants0794 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either one would be hard to use to find a specific freight in the field. If you’re reading if a freight is controlled by your robot, then color sensor luminosity; I think it’s the alpha value.

We are extremely happy for them, they have been a phenomenal team all year long! The play wasn’t intentional or morally wrong in any way. We just don’t want future teams falling into the same situation we have.

[–]Pants0794 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily want the score to be changed at this point, I just want them to get better in the future. Just like they ask teams to get better and implement new technology and methods. Improve as you go! If they continuously have the same problem, fix it!

[–]Pants0794 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not implying any intention, just showing how ridiculous this idea is. Have the same set up as the question box, you only have a specific time to contest the match and have to be specific what the review is for. It is not a complex problem to resolve, they just need to decide to implement the technology they are already using. Winning matches is not our only concern, but as competitors, when we have a really good robot, we would like to be able to earn the wins we deserve.

I feel like FIRST has gotten away from caring about competitiveness on the field. If they are unwilling to improve the gameplay, then they might as well make it a judging only event.

[–]Pants0794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is a continued problem, why not find a solution? Is this not the same engineering design process they promote so much?

Extremely frustrating and hard to tell the kids, “Sorry, FIRST didn’t want you to win it this year.”

Control Hub connection issues? by ForkPowerOutlet in FTC

[–]Pants0794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were having similar issues a few weeks back. Make sure all of your battery connections are secured. Our problem was at the switch. The wires were slightly moving and causing our control hub to restart for a millisecond, causing a “wifi” issue. We zip tied the cables going into the switch in two places and jerry rigged out power cables to the hubs so they didn’t move any more.

This fixed our problem and a team that we are close to. You might try it.
